Rabbi Shook has no excuse for ‘naively’ supporting a mosque: he has a B.A. in Anthropology & Near Eastern Studies.

I realize that doesn’t count for much, but he can’t claim he has no familiarity with Islamic history.

CAIRO — Jewish American Rick Isserman found it incumbent on him to support his Muslim friend Khalid Shah in his fight to build a mosque in their St. Louis County, Missouri.

Isserman, who used to organize with Shah monthly meetings for Jews and Muslims to read and discuss the Noble Qur’an and the Torah, defended the proposed location of the new mosque.

“That’s where the Bosnians are moving.”

South St. Louis County has a large Muslim minority estimated at 50,000, mostly Bosnians who moved from the city.

The Muslims’ battle for the right to build the mosque in the county has reminded Isserman of what happened with his Rabbi grandfather nearly five decades ago.

“I’m fighting the same battle as my grandfather 50 years ago,” he said.

“It’s a different community and a different place, but it’s the same issue.”

Rabbi Ferdinand Isserman was denied a request to move a temple to an area heavily populated by Jews in the same county 48 years ago over zoning problems.

But he did not give up and fought hard until he prevailed in court, which delivered a landmark ruling that later became a legal reference to similar freedom-of-religion cases.

Isserman started mobilizing Jewish support for the construction of mosque, enlisting the help of incumbent Temple Israel’s Rabbi Mark Shook and the president of Jewish community in the area David Weinstein.

Muslim leaders in South St. Louis County were moved by the Jewish token.

“They kept asking what they could do to help,” said Imam Muhamed Hasic, the president of the Islamic Community Center, also called Madina Masjid.

“They wrote letters, they met with the council, they said we needed to stick together.”

Almost a dozen of Christian conservative homeowners adjacent to the disputed land welcomed a new Muslim neighbor.

“It wouldn’t bother me,” said Mamie King, who had a statue of the Virgin Mary in her front yard.

Grace Green, a Pentecostal, said she would like to know more about the new neighbor, “but you have to love your neighbors.”

Extremist from all sides are on a very dangerous path. If they are Christian or Muslim extremists both can be pushed over the edge and do dreadfull things in the name of their religion.
But we mustn’t forget that most religious people at their core are well meaning and hold our society together. Look at our-
Retirement Villages.
Religious Schools
Hospitals
Arts, Maths and Sciences- Used to sponsored by the church look at what was lost with the looting after the Bush attracted Baghdad.
So lets be careful not to be like these religious extremist by venting our own self rightest hate we will be no better man or women.

Pope Innocent VIII’s infamous Witch Bull of 1484, launched several centuries of persecution of so-called witches. Several hundred thousand women, children and men (about 20%) were tortured and burned at the stake or hanged.

Two priests were sentenced to death in 1998 for their roles in this genocide and two Benedictine nuns who supplied gasoline for the burning of Tutsi civilians sheltered in their church fled to Belgium where they were later convicted of complicity to murder.
