WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI said on Sunday that there was no evidence of a terrorism link in the case of two college engineering students who possessed explosive materials in South Carolina over the weekend.
The two men, described in local media reports as non-U.S. citizens of Middle Eastern descent, were taken into custody late on Saturday near Charleston, South Carolina, after local police noticed what looked like explosives in their Toyota sedan during a routine traffic stop.
The FBI said the material proved to be for making homemade fireworks, not dangerous munitions.

The men 21-year-old Yousef Megahed and 24-year-old Ahmed Mohamed (seen in the video attachment) were pulled over Saturday evening during a routine traffic stop near Myers Road and Highway 176. Among the explosive devices found were igniters and fusers. Few details about the suspects are known at this time. They are believed to be students at a Florida college. They are of Middle Eastern descent and are NOT US citizens. Neither man has been charged, but charges are expected Monday. A press conference will be held in Berkeley County on Monday morning. Among the potential charges is possession of unlawful explosives. Officials are not at this time releasing any additional information. Highway 176 in Goose Creek was shut down and has since reopened. Stay tuned to ABC News 4 and for details as they become available.

Remarkable how quickly CAIR surfaces to paint the “peaceful ones” as “really naive kids”, and the family thinks the explosives are leftover from July 4, and kept in the car boot. I don’t know about July 4, but after Guy Fawkes night, if there were any fireworks left over, it was what we found in the back yard or street, & quickly let off. I don’t recall ever keeping them for a month. :)

2 held in explosives scare; Islamic leader says men are college students on road trip
Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization for Muslims, said the men arrested are Youseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24 - two University of South Florida students.
Family members told Bedier they think the materials were leftover fireworks Megahed kept in his trunk since July 4.
“Both of them are really naïve kids,” Bedier said.

I just read the article. I am a mechanic, and I don’t carry chemicals in my car…. (mind you, I don’t carry ‘fireworks’ either) Sounds like a situation where ‘racial profiling’ worked in a positive way.

CAIR’s “really naive kids” were “in possession of pipe bombs and materials that could have been made to make more bombs”, according to the prosecutor.
And, of course, one man’s pipe bombs are another man’s fireworks, according to CAIR, who knows about these things.
“Meantime we talked to Ahmed Bedier after the prosecutor said there were pipe bombs in the car; he maintains what some call pipe bombs others call fire works.”

A terrorism task force, meanwhile is reviewing the evidence, said FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.
“At this point, it is too early in the investigation to say there is any link to terrorism,” Kolko said.
