Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a gun and bomb attack after a rally in the city of Rawalpindi, her party said.

“She has been martyred,” party official Rehman Malik said.

Ms Bhutto, 54, died in hospital in Rawalpindi. Ary-One Television said she had been shot in the head.

Police said a suicide bomber fired shots at Ms Bhutto as she was leaving the rally venue in a park before blowing himself up.

“The man first fired at Bhutto’s vehicle. She ducked and then he blew himself up,” police officer Mohammad Shahid said.

Police said 16 people had been killed in the blast. Earlier, party officials said Ms Bhutto was safe.

A Reuters witness said he saw about eight bodies on a road.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said initial reports suggested it was a suicide bombing and more than 10 people had been killed.

A suicide bomber killed nearly 150 people in an attack on Ms Bhutto on October 18 as she paraded through the southern city of Karachi after returning home from eight years in self-imposed exile.

Earlier, gunmen opened fire on supporters of another former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, from an office of the party that supports President Pervez Musharraf, killing four Sharif supporters, police said.

Today we heard one of the tawaagheet of this earth perish, after she continually declared war on Islam and Muslims, and openly condemned Islamic schools and the ulamaa’ (scholars), pledging to support those who have waged war on Allah (SWT) and His Deen (religion).

Verily, this news entered happiness into the hearts of all sincere Muslims. But sadly there are some ignorant people who mourn her death.

This exposes Pakistan in all its glory. A failed state, which back in 1954 was on a par with Taiwan. Look where we are 54 years on. Taiwan is a wealthy and progressive Westernised country, whilst Pakistan is a semiliterate Islamic craphole with open sewers, a 30% literacy rate, overrun with savages who’ll do this sort of thing with no regrets - and much more worryingly - armed with nukes. Those who can plan and do this sort of thing to Benazir Bhutto wouldn’t baulk at eliminating 6 million Israelis, 7 million Londoners, 17 million New Yorkers, or Calcutta’s 18 million residents if they had the chance. Lets be in no doubt as to what gets taught in the madrassahs. The pro-Jihad press in Pakistan wanted this to happen just as the pro-Nazi press in Germany wanted the Reichstag to go up in flames. But Bhutto’s killers represent something far worse and much darker than Nazism or Communism. They represent the new wannabe order in Pakistan, then the world. The repercussions of this atrocity will reverberate right across the Muslim world. Islamic Intolerance is on the march, yet intellectually paralysed by 40 years of political correctness, we dare not call a spade a spade. We dare not expose Islam for what it is, lest we get accused of racism. We dare not tell the families of victims of Islamic atrocities about the commands to murder non-Muslims in the texts of the Koran, Sira and hadith, nor the rewards of 72 virgins promised for these murderous acts. Any attempts to tell the truth on far too many messageboards leads to these truthtelling posts being removed.

Here in the West, we have far too many stupid leaders who still cling to the asinine belief that Islam is a religion of peace, contrary to the evidence of 14 centuries of ravenous bloodletting and suffering on an epic scale, when in full technicolor, it is a religion of murder, bloodlust, savagery, sadism, extreme cruelty, misogyny, infidel-hatred, viciously antisemitic, anti-progressive, destructive, wishes to destroy all pleasure, slags us off as immoral whilst at the same time elevating mass murderers to martyrdom.

Anti-Islamic outsider is top Dutch politician

Geert Wilders, who compares the Koran to Mein Kampf, has been named the Netherlands’ politician of the year in a poll run by public broadcaster NOS.

Mr Wilders’ pithy and shocking soundbites – he warned of a “tsunami of Islamisation” – have dominated headlines, while his parliamentary outbursts have brought an adversarial style of politics to the muted consensus to which the Dutch are attuned.

His latest project, a short film about the Koran that will be released next month, has stirred anger even before much is known about it. Mr Wilders, who has had round-the-clock protection for three years due to the death threats against him, says the film will illustrate how the Koran inspires people “to do the worst things”.

He has called for the Koran to be banned. “With this film I’m trying to show not only in words but also images exactly what I mean,” he says.

Mindful of the backlash provoked by the publication in Danish newspapers in 2005 of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, government ministers have expressed concern but said there is not much they can do. Some public figures outside parliament have called for a movement against Mr Wilders.

The murders in 2002 of Pim Fortuyn, a pioneer of Dutch anti-immigration and anti-Islam politics, and in 2005 of Theo van Gogh, the director of a film critical of Islam, have pushed immigration and the failure to integrate large Muslim communities to the top of the Dutch political agenda.

Mr Wilders’ proposed solutions are deeply radical: stop all Muslim immigration, ban the building of mosques and ask the 1m Muslims among the Dutch population of 16m to “go to their own countries” or give up their religion.

He remains a highly controversial outsider and – many Dutch Muslims and non-Muslims alike would rather not discuss him. But his Party for Freedom, the PVV, won nine of 150 seats in parliament in the last election and it regularly polls above that level.

Mr Wilders has spent a career in public service and sat as an MP for the mainstream Liberal party, the VVD, for five years before breaking away in 2004. He has always demonstrated a feel for the popular mood. He was among those who campaigned for the surprise Dutch No vote against the European constitution in 2005. “Wilders knows his way around the parliament and he’s good at the work,” says Luuk van Middelaar, the Dutch political philosopher who worked alongside him as a political adviser to the Liberal party.

That is perhaps one advantage Mr Wilders has over politicians such as Christoph Blocher, who was ejected from Switzerland’s government this month, or parties such as the far-right Vlaams Belang in Belgium, subject to a long-standing “cordon sanitaire” by the other parties.

The NOS poll naming him politician of the year combined votes from the public and those of the parliamentary press corps. Mr Wilders, who denies being racist, usually says the press is biased against him.

The film project prompted Doekle Terpstra, a former trades unionist, to call for the movement against Mr Wilders. “It is time to send a powerful signal to all the Muslims in our country,” Mr Terpstra wrote. “The sound of Wilders is not the sound of the Netherlands.”

Iranian Jews find new homes in Israel

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Greeted by joyous relatives and a crowd of reporters, about 40 Iranian Jews landed in Israel on Tuesday, leaving behind their lives in the Islamic republic for new homes in the Jewish state.

Iranian Jews, who didn’t want to be identified, arrive at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, Israel, on Tuesday.

Family members screamed in delight and threw candy at the newcomers as they emerged into the airport reception hall after a long bureaucratic procedure. No details about their route of exit from Iran were given.

“I feel so good,” said Yosef, 16. He and his brother Michael arrived with their parents and a sister and were greeted by their grandparents, who went to Israel six years ago.

“I just saw all of my family. You can’t put that into words,” Yosef said. The brothers declined to give their family name to protect relatives still in Iran.
The new arrivals were sponsored by the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, a charity that funnels millions of dollars from evangelical donors each year.

Its founder, Rabbi Yehiel Eckstein, said by telephone from Chicago, Illinois, that each immigrant received $10,000 because they left behind all their possessions and “start in Israel with nothing,” although many said at the airport that they were joining family already here.

Evangelical backers of Israel say they are following a biblical prophecy that the creation of a Jewish state here is a step toward the Messianic Age. Some Israeli critics saying their ultimate goal is to convert Jews to Christianity, which the evangelicals deny.

Michael, 15, said he told all his friends where he was going, and they wanted to come along.

“I was scared in Iran as a Jew,” he said.

No comment was available Tuesday from the Iranian government.

Iran’s Jewish community of about 25,000 people is protected by the country’s constitution and remains the largest in the Muslim Middle East. Synagogues, Jewish schools and stores operate openly in the capital, but Jews also report discrimination and increasing concerns about hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s hostility toward Israel.

About 200 Iranian Jews arrived in Israel this year, more than any other year since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, said Michael Jankelowitz, spokesman for the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency, which deals with immigration.

Benjamin Yakobi, 16, has lived in Israel seven years. As he waited for his cousin, he said Israel is safer than Iran.

“Here we are all Jewish, and we are not worried that someone will do something,” he said.

“I’m in heaven,” gushed Avraham Dayan, 63, as he waited for his son, daughter-in-law and grandson to arrive. He said he had not seen his 38-year-old son in 11 years, missing his son’s wedding and the birth of his grandson.

Fear of reprisals:

Meir Javedanfar, an Israeli analyst whose family emigrated from Iran in the 1980s, said Jews are generally free to practice their religion inside Iran, but are increasingly concerned about the intensity of attacks on Israel by the Iranian press, which they view as bordering on is rabid anti-Semitism, he said.

But Eckstein warned that the situation facing Iranian Jews is critical because of the attitude of Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly called for the disappearance of Israel. (he actually wants “to wipe Israel off the map”) Despite a recent U.S. intelligence report that found Iran has stopped its nuclear weapons program, Israel believes Iran is still trying to build a nuclear bomb.

“By the time they realize it’s not going to blow over, it’ll be too late,” Eckstein said. “All it needs is a U.S. or Israeli strike against Iran’s nuclear program for them to come down strong on the local Jewish population.”

A pervasive bias exists in the way Islam is studied in the West, says a prominent Muslim thinker, who is calling for sweeping changes in how Islamic studies are taught in universities.

Tariq Ramadan, a visiting professor at Oxford University and one of Europe’s leading intellectuals on Islam, argues that despite a growing interest in the field, the scholarly pursuit of Islam is driven not by an interest in theology, but by fear and an obsession with the struggle against terrorism.

In the latest issue of the Canadian journal Academic Matters, Mr. Ramadan chastises universities for their “carefully orchestrated infatuation” with Islamic studies and calls for a less politicized approach to the field.

He says the current academic focus on terrorism and the struggle against radical movements is simplistic, reducing the richness of Islamic theology into political ideology.

“The study of religious thought proper (of the theology, of its premises, its internal complexities and its development) has been relegated to a subsidiary position,” he writes.

“Universities in the West must seek the kind of knowledge of other civilizations and cultures — particularly that of Islam — that is driven neither by ideological agendas nor collective fears.”

What’s “cruelly lacking,” Mr. Ramadan argues, is an objective study of Islamic law, legal scholars and philosophers, as well as “an historical and critical approach to Islamic history and thought.”

Since much of that literature is in Arabic or Urdu, scholars who want a deeper understanding of the Muslim world must master those languages, says Mr. Ramadan.

He goes on to criticize western scholars for ignoring the body of “fresh, compelling, audacious critical thought” emerging from contemporary Muslim societies, which are often eclipsed by controversies surrounding Shariah law or the role of women.

“There is a deep-down, deliberate process of evolution under way in every Islamic society in the world,” writes Mr. Ramadan.

“Far from rushing to conclusions, far from populist, ideological speech, the academic world must take this process seriously, study it, and present its outlines and implications.”

Mr. Ramadan lashes out at what he perceives to be a double standard in western universities that assumes religious studies professors who practise other faiths can objectively teach and do research in their field,
while academics who practise Islam cannot.

* Here he takes on an egregious example from a genre of loaded comparisons, this one made by Amartya Sen, the Nobel laureate economist, in his recent book Identity and Violence. Sen has the temerity to proclaim, “…the Jewish Philosopher Maimonides was forced to emigrate from an intolerant Europe in the twelfth century, he found a tolerant refuge in the Arab world.”

Sen’s ahistorical drivel aside, Maimonides (b. 1135, in Cordova) was but thirteen years old (in 1148) when Muslim Cordova fell into the hands of the particularly fanatical Berber Muslim Almohads, who invaded the Iberian peninsula from North Africa. Maimonides and all the dhimmi Jews in Cordova were compelled to choose between Islam and exile. Choosing the latter course, Maimonides and his family for twelve years subsequently led a nomadic life, wandering across Spain. By 1160 they crossed the Mediterranean, and settled at Fez, Morocco (also under Almohad control) where, unknown to the authorities, they hoped to pass as Muslims, while living as crypto-Jews. Maimonides’ dual life, however, became increasingly dangerous as his reputation was steadily growing, and the authorities began to inquire into the religious disposition of this highly gifted young man. He was even charged by an informer with the crime of having relapsed (apostasized) from Islam, and, but for the intercession of the poet and theologian Abu al-‘Arab al Mu’ishah, a Muslim friend, he would have suffered the fate of his colleague Judah ibn Shoshan, who had shortly before been executed on a similar charge. Given these precarious circumstances, Maimonides’ family left Fez, embarking in 1165 to Acre, then to Jerusalem, and on to Fostat (Cairo), where they settled, living once again as dhimmis, albeit under more tolerant Fatimid rule.

The jihad depredations of the Almohads (1130-1232) wreaked enormous destruction on both the Jewish and Christian populations in Spain and North Africa. A contemporary Judeo-Arabic account by Solomon Cohen (which comports with Arab historian Ibn Baydhaq’s sequence of events), from January 1148 C.E, described the Muslim Almohad conquests in North Africa, and Spain, as follows:

One hundred thousand persons were killed in Fez on that occasion, and 120,000 in Marrakesh. The Jews in all [Maghreb] localities [conquered]…groaned under the heavy yoke of the Almohads; many had been killed, many others converted; none were able to appear in public as Jews…Large areas between Seville and Tortosa [in Spain] had likewise fallen into Almohad hands.

But on Thursday, a muezzin is calling Spanish Muslims to prayer at the first mosque to be opened in Granada since the reconquista, the culmination of a 22-year-old project that has been plagued by controversy.

For those who built the Great Mosque of Granada, which looks out onto the once highly symbolic Alhambra Palace, its inauguration - attended by a string of Muslim and non-Muslim dignitaries - heralds a new dawn for the faith in Europe.

“The mosque is a symbol of a return to Islam among the Spanish people and among indigenous Europeans that will break with the malicious concept of Islam as a foreign and immigrant religion in Europe,” says Abdel Haqq Salaberria, a spokesman for the mosque and convert to Islam.

“It will act as a focal point for the Islamic revival in Europe.”

It is precisely this which has caused some discomfort among the local population, but it appears that the mosque’s insistence on harmonious co-existence has gone some way towards calming fears.

At a time when the Islamic faith is viewed with some suspicion within Europe, Spanish Muslims are hoping to remind the continent of the vast cultural and intellectual contribution made by the Moors, to “art and architecture, astronomy, music, medicine, science, and learning.”

The Moorish period in southern Spain saw Muslims and Jews living side-by-side. The city of Cordoba became a cultural centre for both faiths, while universities sprang up in cities across Andalucia. Trade and industry also flourished.

The new mosque intends to offer a series of courses on subjects such as education, law and medicine, as well as Arabic language classes, and is planning on issuing its own degree in science to European Muslims.

The mosque and its extensive gardens will also be open to the public.

It will serve as a spiritual home to 500 Spanish Muslims, the majority of whom have converted to the faith in the course of the last 30 years.

Struggle

It has taken a long time to get this far.

The land on which the mosque has been built was bought 22 years ago, but city authorities continually objected to the planning proposals.

When it was finally accepted that the land could be used for religious purposes, objections were raised to the layout of the building.
Planners had to rethink the height and design of the building’s minaret.

But opposition to the scheme, which received financial backing from Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, gradually subsided.

The mayor, a member of Spain’s ruling right-wing party, will attend Thursday’s inauguration.

The king of Spain was also offered an invitation.

But “prior engagements” meant he was unable to accept.

However, it also says that the “transgressors” — who are clearly Jews from the context, since it is talking about Moses etc. — “changed the word from that which had been given them” (2:59).

Also: “Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say: ‘This is from Allah,’ to traffic with it for miserable price!- Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby” (2:79).

“And remember Allah took a covenant from the People of the Book, to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made!” (3:187)

This goes for Christians as well as Jews:

“But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them- barring a few - ever bent on (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for Allah loveth those who are kind. On those verses rests the Islamic idea that the Jewish and Christian Scriptures have been corrupted, as well as the assertions that the earlier prophets were Muslim (3:67, etc.).

* Today we increasingly hear and read that Christianity and Islam ‘share’ Jesus, that he belongs to both religions. So also with Abraham: there is talk of the West’s ‘Abrahamic civilization’ where once people spoke of ‘Judeo-Christian civilization’. This shift of thinking reflects the growing influence of Islam.

The killing of the swine is so that the “Christian belief of its lawfulness is belied.” The reason for abolishing the jizyah tax (the compulsory poll-tax that non-Muslims must pay in order to live in a Muslim land) is based on the idea that when Jesus returns, the jizyah tax will no longer be accepted. The only choice that Christians will have is to accept Islam or die.

2. He will arrive at a time when the Mahdi and his army will be preparing to pray.

3. He will be offered to lead the prayer by the Mahdi, but will decline in direct deference to the Mahdi who Jesus declares to be the leader of the Muslims.

4. He will then pray behind the Mahdi as a subordinate.

11. He will kill the Antichrist and his followers made up largely of Jews and women.

12. He will remain on the earth for roughly forty years, during which time he will marry, have children and then die.

As we have clearly seen, the Muslim Jesus, in both his nature and actions is far different than the biblical Jesus. Rather than coming to reign as King and Messiah over all the earth from Jerusalem, Jesus instead comes to convert the world to Islam or kill those who refuse to do so. Instead of coming to save and deliver faithful Christians and Jews, he comes instead to kill and slaughter them.

The mother of the Islamic Jesus is Mary–Maryam, the Miriam of our Old Testament (Tanakh, if you will), who is the sister of Moses and Aaron! Eighteen Centuries between Moses and Jesus are juxtaposed! In the predominantly Muslim island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines ordinary citizens have started nightly patrols in the streets around churches to allow Catholics to celebrate “dawn masses” until Christmas.

Zamboanga (AsiaNews) – On the first Sunday of Advent patrols made up of Muslim volunteers began a nightly watch to protect churches in the predominantly Muslim island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. Grateful to these young people who are providing “help and protection” during the Christmas period residents near these Christian places of worship are offering them food and drink.

As part of this muftis from Basilan, Lanao Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces have issued fatwas or Islamic edicts to remind the faithful that terrorism is prohibited and that Muhammad himself guaranteed Christians protection and freedom of worship.

“I have promised them (Christian residents) equal protection, and I asked Muslims and Christians here to uphold mutual respect on matters of religious belief,” said Sukarno Utto, village chief in Shariff Kabunsuan in Maguindanao city. “For this reason we have joined the local police in nightly patrols, especially during the Simbang Gabi (dawn masses),” a Filipino tradition that goes back centuries in which mass begins every day at 4 pm in every church till Christmas Day.

Government authorities and the police have expressed “satisfaction” for the decision taken by Muslim civilians.

According to the local city police chief, Superintendent Willy Dangane, this initiative must be praised. “It is especially useful because if the police does all it can, it still needs real help from citizens if we want to maintain peace and stability.”

Heavy security in Indonesia for Christmas

JAKARTA (Reuters) - More than 17,000 police and soldiers have been deployed in the Indonesian capital to guard against a repeat of Christmas Eve attacks seven years ago, when Christian churches in the mainly Muslim nation were bombed.

There had been no intelligence reports of a possible attack by Islamic militants but police were taking no chances, Jakarta police spokesman Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said on Monday.

“We are anticipating any eventualities even though there are no indications of an attack,” he said.

Police will check churchgoers’ bags in some locations, another police officer said.

The coordinated bombings targeting churches on Christmas Eve in 2000 left 18 people dead nationwide.

The bombings and a series of other attacks that followed have been blamed on members of the Southeast Asian regional militant group Jemaah Islamiah.

Jakarta’s police chief, Adang Firman, said extra security would be provided to bigger churches.

“The threat of terror is always present,” he told Elshinta radio.

Volunteer groups, including members of Islamic mass organisations, will help police to ensure peaceful Christmas celebrations, said the Jakarta police spokesman.

The youth wing of the Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organisation in the world’s most populous Muslim country, is deploying 15,000 members nationwide to guard Churches and other venues used by Christians during Christmas.

“We do this every year. We live in a diverse nation and we respect differences,” the youth wing’s chairman, Syaifullah Yusuf, was quoted as saying on the group’s Web site.

Around 10 percent of Indonesia’s 220 million people are Christian. Muslims make up about 85 percent of the population and while the vast majority are moderates, there is an active militant minority.

Police have arrested hundreds of militants linked to JI since the 2002 Bali bombings in which more than 200 people were killed.

There has not been a major attack since three suicide bombers blew themselves up in Bali in October, 2005, killing at least 20 people. But police and some analysts say Indonesia still faces a considerable threat from Islamic militants.

Blair, the Muslim?

Britain’s former prime minister has spoken in praise of Islam - so why has he become a Catholic and not a Muslim?

You’ve probably heard that former British prime minister Tony Blair has become a Roman Catholic. Well, here’s a column at the Grauniad by Ajmal Masroor (who appeared on Channel 4’s bizarre “Make Me a Muslim” show) arguing that Blair should have converted to Islam instead, because Christianity is “regressive:” Blair, the Muslim?

Tony Blair’s conversion to Catholicism does not come as a surprise to anyone but I would have liked him to turn to Islam instead. Blair has claimed on many occasions that he has read the Quran and has said he found its teachings “progressive”. He is right that the Quran is progressive and as a revealed book of God, it is the latest testament. Why would Blair turn to the older versions of God’s testament when there is the Quran? His conversion sounds rather regressive to me.

Different denominational churches within Christianity are part of the same house. If the Church of England was not providing our former prime minister with spiritual fulfilment changing to another denomination within the same house surely will not make substantial difference. If he is looking for reform and spirituality, he should come to Islam. Blair has said the Quran strikes him as a reforming book “trying to return Judaism and Christianity to their origins, much as reformers attempted to do with the Christian church centuries later”. If he so admires the Quran for its reformist outlook, why turn to Christianity and particularly Catholic Church, which has been plagued with centuries of baggage?

In an article published by Foreign Affairs early this year, Blair spoke of the Quran as being inclusive. His new Church has been the most exclusive and in the name of its own version of Christianity has murdered and destroyed the lives and properties of many fellow Christians over the years. In his role as a Middle East envoy he would have won the hearts and minds of the Muslim world if he had come to Islam. He might have found redemption for his crimes against Iraq and its innocent people. His conversion to Catholicism would no doubt remind the Muslim world, especially the Arab world of the history of the Crusades. The blood of millions of people still stain the cobblestones of the Holy Land from the cold-blooded murders committed in the name of Christianity and was blessed by the then Papacy in Rome.

* Imagine, if you will, the reaction from Muslims if a Christian priest or minister said similar things about Islam. Actually, you don’t have to imagine; just recall any of the riots or murders that followed Pope Benedict’s indirect quotation of a relatively mild criticism of Islam by a Byzantine emperor.

The question we need to ask is:

Why has The Guardian allowed itself to become a mouthpiece for Islamic proselytizing?

* Yeah, the Koran is so progressive…that’s why Muslims are so educated, wealthy, broad-minded, inventive and pacific.
