Don’t Panic, I’m Islamic, which featured the group paintballing and an interview with Mohammed Hamid, was shown on BBC2 on June 12, 2005.

Nasreen Suleaman, the producer, told the court that Hamid said he would use his £300 fee to settle the fine he had been given by magistrates for racially abusing two policemen at his Oxford Street stall.

She said she thought he was scared the fugitives might try to call him but did not contact the police because she felt under “no obligation” to do so.

I suspect Suleaman has conflicts that may interfere with her reporting - and her duty to non-Muslim Britons.

Most Muslim radicals insist that it is – as do many patriotic conservatives in this country who believe that any attempts to woo Islamic moderates, or to whitewash the violent and menacing essence of the Koran, distort the true nature of the current conflict.
Some of those who see Islam in all of its manifestations as our ultimate, implacable foe took me to task (in e-mail and phone calls to my radio show) for my recent support for U.S. recognition of the newly independent Muslim-majority state of Kosovo.

To these zealots, it hardly matters that the leading European powers (Britain, France, Germany) strongly support Kosovo’s separation from Serbia, or that the most outspoken opposition to Kosovar independence comes from the increasingly anti-American Putin regime in Russia. To some observers, it’s also irrelevant that ethnic Albanians (mostly non-religious, secularized Muslims) comprise more than 90% of Kosovo’s population and this overwhelming majority ardently desires its own democratic nation state. Though Orthodox Christian Serbs make up only 5% of the populace in Kosovo, critics of Bush administration Balkan policy insist that this embattled minority deserves U.S. protection and support. They discount fervent Kosovar promises that the new nation will guarantee the rights and security of its Christian residents; skeptics believe that such assurances mean nothing when provided by Muslim leaders, no matter how secular or pro-American.

“You of all people should recognize that there is no such thing as a ‘moderate Muslim,’” one correspondent scolded me. “Moderation and Islam contradict one another. Anyone who denies that contradiction is either a fool or a dupe. The tragedy in Kosovo represents just the latest example of state department mistakes based on the consistent denial that Islam, wherever it exists, is the eternal enemy of democratic values and Western Civilization.”

This increasingly popular absolutist position – whatever its historical, theological or anthropological basis – represents a threat to our short-term security and our long-term success in the very real battle against Islamism. If we accept, let alone embrace, the proposition that Islam itself is our enemy, then all of the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims become enemies of the United States, and doom us to unending and un-winnable conflict.

The Muslim spiritual leader of a group of men charged with planning violent jihad in Australia, was not a terrorist and was not plotting to kill former Prime Minister John Howard, his lawyer shyster told a court on Wednesday.

Benbrika, 47, who praised al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden as a “great man,” told the group that Australia was a land at war and jihad was justified, the prosecutor has told the court.

“He is a man who is not a terrorist,” defense lawyer Remy van de Wiel said on Wednesday in opening his case, reported Australian Associated Press from the court.

He said the group was not a terrorist organization, it did not have weapons, explosives or ammunition and did not have a plot to kill Howard.

The prosecutor said police raids on the men’s homes had found literature on how to make bombs and video tapes with messages from Osama bin Laden and showing beheadings. The prosecutor said one of the men received paramilitary training which included demolitions using explosives at an overseas camp in 2001.

The prosecutor has said one of the men, Abdullah Merhi, raised the idea of killing Howard in a September 2004 conversation with Benbrika.

But Benbrika’s defense lawyer dismissed the comments, saying “they are no different to what trade unionists said about John Howard.”

He said the secretly taped conversations between Benbrika, a deeply religious man, and the men reflected their frustrations at the treatment of “his people” in the Middle East.

Brisbane Airport Security: 

SECURITY at Brisbane Airport has gone into a spin after an unprecedented crackdown on turbans and other culturally-sensitive headgear worn by passengers.

A federal investigation has been launched into an edict by the company in charge of the airport’s security to demand passengers remove for security checks religious headwear, including turbans, veils and Jewish skull caps.

At least one international flight was delayed at the weekend when staff from the company, ISS Security, demanded 13 people of the Sikh religion remove their turbans and a Muslim woman to take off her face veil.

The edict, which was reversed late yesterday after inquiries by The Courier-Mail, follows revelations about weak screening and regular weapons breaches at Brisbane Airport.

The concerns include two knives being found on passengers who had passed through security checkpoints and broad failures of screeners to monitor passengers and baggage.

Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 48, a self-taught religious instructor, told an ABC television interviewer he did not encourage followers to take part in so-called holy wars (jihads) overseas or in Australia.

He said he merely passed on the teachings of the Koran.

Benbrika vowed ‘Jihad in Jail’

The accused leader of a terrorist organisation told a co-accused they would continue jihad in jail if they were caught, a Crown prosecutor told a Supreme Court jury today.

Crown prosecutor Richard Maidment, SC, told the jury the alleged spiritual leader, Abdul Nacer Benbrika, and co-accused, Majed Raad, were recorded by listening devices discussing the study of jihad.

“We continue the jihad in jail, everywhere,” Benbrika allegedly said.

Mr Maidment told the court Benbrika, along with co-accused Hany Taha and co-accused Shoue Hammoud, were also recorded by listening devices in Benbrika’s home after a series of ASIO raids in 2005.

“They read how to destroy us and we read how to kill them,” Benbrika allegedly said.

During the Supreme Court trial of 12 men accused of various terrorism charges, a video was played to the court of a second interview with Age journalist Nick McKenzie from 2005.

The video allegedly showed McKenzie asking Benbrika if he would stop a student of his engaging in violence.

“If I do this, I betray my religion,” Benbrika allegedly replied.

Further in the video, Benbrika allegedly said: “If he want to please Allah, I will never stop him.”

The two training camp ringleaders — one who claimed to be the “No. 1 al-Qaida in Europe” and the other who nicknamed himself “Osama bin London” — will be sentenced next month on charges of running the camps and inciting participants to murder. Five others were each sentenced Tuesday to at least 3 1/2 years in prison on charges of attending terrorism training.

And after those 3 1/2 years or so, then what? Deportation? Loss of citizenship? Something like control orders?

The documents reveal Hicks as a zealous Muslim - studying the Koran for up to nine hours a day - who acquired nine months of expert military and terrorist training in 2000 and 2001. In a letter to his family in February 2000, Hicks admits: “I am now officially a Taliban member.”

…”I’m going back (to Afghanistan) but this time with the Arabs and to bin Laden’s camps,” he says in a letter to Ms King, received in January 2001. Between then and his capture in December 2001, Hicks visited bin Laden about 20 times, and undertook 25 weeks of training with al-Qa’ida.
