How can an Islamic nation punish a man for preaching Islamic truths and putting those truths into action? Obviously they need to reassure tourists (with all those lovely dollars and euros to spend), so they put on a sham trial and pronounce a featherweight punishment, hoping to persuade the unwary that they're cracking down on "the tiny minority that misunderstands true Islam". But Islam is what Islam is. It can lie about itself, but it cannot change itself. Bashir, among so many others, demonstrates how the fundamental ideas and principles of Islam manifest themselves in the world. It IS a clash of cultures; it IS a war of ideas. It is ideology made manifest through the culture of those who adopt that belief system. The West is far from perfect; absolutely, no question. But the West has an ideology which allows it to test reality, evaluate results, and attempt to change for the better. Islam has a blind belief in "What Allah Said For All Time" and was closed to reinterpretation of "What Allah Said" back in the 1200's (ijtihad).
