Asshole of the Month: Philip Bennett, the Washington Post’s managing editor

With thanx to Mullah:

* Yes Sir: there are those who will not learn. There are those who reject reality and there are those who are on the payroll of the enemy. There are those who are deliberately stoopid and there are those who just never had a clear mental moment and remain empty suits for a whole wasted life.

But we need CHANGE, like NOW!!!!

* “Media to blame for Islamic misconceptions”

From the ‘Bunglawussi wispered in my ear’ department:

The managing editor of one of the country’s biggest newspapers thinks news organizations ought to hire more Muslim reporters.

Philip Bennett, the Washington Post’s managing editor, said reporters often struggle with understanding Islam during a speech Monday at UCI about the difficulties of covering the religion.

Bennett’s speech focused on the media’s need to cover issues concerning Islam in an in-depth, long-term manner.

To illustrate this point he drew mainly from quotes of notable colleagues and statistical polls, rarely giving his own opinion directly.

“Six of 10 Americans, according to a 2007 ABC Poll, don’t understand the basic tenets of Islam,” Bennett said.

He attributed this to the lack of Muslims working in American newsrooms.

“At the Post I want more Muslim readers and I want more Muslim journalists,” he said.

* We don’t. We don’t want it. We don’t need it. We need somebody with balls. We don’t need spin doctors to cook the news. We need somebody to kick ass: no more empty suits!

Words poorly translated from Arabic to English are a big source of confusion caused by the lack of Muslim voices in the American media, according to Bennett.

Zeyad Maasarani, 22, a Muslim reporter for California’s most circulated Muslim publication, Southern California in Focus, agrees with Bennett that terms like “jihad,” “madrasa” and “hijab” are a big source of the public’s misunderstanding of Islam.

“Jihad means holy war, which is the definition that most Americans know, but it also means struggle, and valiant attempt,” Maasarani said.

* Tokyo Rose: ‘Whisper sweet nothings in my ears, honey…’

One such word that has been contentiously debated in newsrooms is “Islamist,” which generally refers to a political movement governed by Islamic law. Bennett said at the Washington Post editors still have not decided whether to add it to their style book.

Some argue the word is a useful distinction for movements like Hamas and Hezbollah, but others at the Post argue that it is too vague and should be omitted in favor of a more specific description.

Bennett spent most of his time recalling an anecdote about a misunderstood Muslim group in Walkersville, Md., who were trying to purchase a large amount of land for a retreat.

The Ahmadiyya, an Islamic sect considered heretical through much of the Muslim world, did TV interviews, town hall meetings and even door-to-door interviews to try to convince the people of Walkersville that they meant well, according to Bennett, but the county zoning board ultimately denied permission to buy the land.

He cites cursorily researched articles in the local and national newspapers that neglected to figure out who the Ahmadiyya really were as a primary reason that their proposal was met with massive protests.

Bennett said that in the period following 9/11 there was a lot of uninformed writing about Islam, and that “the best journalism fought against the tide of public perception.”

* Why would ‘the best journalism fight against the tide of public perception,’ Bennet???

* What makes you think you have to force the Broccoli down our collective throats? Are you saying you used to hate it till you ate it, Bennet?

Bennet’s lecture is part of a larger series of events on religion and politics sponsored by the UCI Center for the Study of Democracy.

* Remember: Democracy is like a bus: “You ride it until you arrive at your destination, then you step off.” Tayyip Erdogan, PM of turkey

*

Who could imagine that the imbecile George Bush could dumb a whole nation down?

Imam George Bush

“Islam is Peace”, sez President:

The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don’t represent peace. They represent evil and war.

When we think of Islam we think of a faith that brings comfort to a billion people around the world. Billions of people find comfort and solace and peace. And that’s made brothers and sisters out of every race — out of every race.

*

Update: the New York Times peddles the same mindless BS:

“When they behead someone, they say ‘Allahu akbar,’ they read Koranic verse…The young people, they think this is Islam”

american-beheading.jpg

This article about how young Iraqis are growing disillusioned with Islam has the expected elements of a New Duranty Times story:

the affirmation that jihad violence has nothing to do with Islam

* Depressing. 7 years after 9/11 people are more ignorant than ever. Looks like we have to be nuked before somebody gets the message…

That is an insult to A__holes! I know mine is offended!

  2. >>”Words poorly translated from Arabic to English are a big source of confusion

Ratfeathers! The problem is weeneys like Bennett who don’t make the public aware of what the Moslems are truly saying in Arabic. THAT is the disservice!

  3. “Some argue the word is a useful distinction for movements like Hamas and Hezbollah, but others at the Post argue that it is too vague and should be omitted in favor of a more specific description.”

I don’t like using all those other words – islamist, radical muslim/islam, insurgent, etc. They are muslims and their ‘religion’ is islam. If the so called masses of ‘moderates’ want to do something about it they will start stopping it! Until then – I will offend them whenever I can.

  4. And the MSM wonders why viewers of their networks and subscribers to their papers continue to dwindle. They are so in love with their own ideas that they presume you will literally BUY their rambling opinions as it were factual news.

  5. That excuse that arabic is poorly translated into English is an excuse the muslims use when we figure out what their koran and hadiths are all about – wanting us dead, converted or subjugated. They will then say we really don’t understand it.

Well, boo hoo – the translators are arab muslims in most cases so they can take their excuse and feed it to my toilet. And this guy, Bennett, just fell for one of the excuses and probably more. I guess it is easy not to think and take anything a muslim says for granted. I just don’t understand a guy who is dealing with the news on a daily basis and knows what muslims do worldwide will take the words of a muslim who is obviously worrying more about their image than about what they do.

As for the 5 tenets of islam – I don’t want to know them! Does Benett plan on equal time and tell us about whatever the Jews believe in, or the Mormons, or the Hindus or Buddhists?!!? NO – so they can take the 5 tenets and put them in the toilet with those excuses they use.

  6. Senor Doeboy>>”They are so in love with their own ideas that they presume you will literally BUY their rambling opinions as it were factual news.

The MSM and the Moslems claiming victory in Gaza after having their tails handed to them — birds of a feather flock together.

  7. R_Not>>”I don’t like using all those other words – islamist, radical muslim/islam, insurgent, etc. They are muslims and their ‘religion’ is islam. If the so called masses of ‘moderates’ want to do something about it they will start stopping it! Until then – I will offend them whenever I can.

Excellent points all the way around. Not only do the “majority moderates” not give information regarding the terrorists in their midst, but they fund them with untold millions of dollars. Don’t Moslems blame All Americans for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan even though half the country is not Republican? I fear that the time in which all of Islam will be held accountable for terrorism is fast approaching. One reaps what he sows.

  8. Six out of ten Americans don’t understand Islamania? That’s still a better rate than Koranists-seemingly 99 percent don’t grasp their own philosophy-after all we’re always told jihadists “misunderstand” the Koran and the rest of the ummah does nothing about them (thereby complicitly aiding them and showing that they too don’t understand correctly).

  9. el Greco>>”Why do you fear that Joe Grey?

I wish there was another wayxxxxx. Please agree with me.

  10. If you haven’t seen this yet, here it is again:

“When they behead someone, they say ‘Allahu akbar,’” . . .
When you hear someone shout, “Allahu Akbar!”What should you do?

Caveat: At this time, one must still be careful how one reacts when hearing this “Allahu Akbar!” The time will come, let us pray that it will be soon, when there is only one reaction to the outcry: locate the shouter and terminate him “with extreme prejudice” (as Martin Sheen was ordered to do to Marlon Brando in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now (1979).”)

  11. More Moslems in the newsrooms of the Main-Stream Media–yes, that’s what we need. The news and opinion we get now via these channels is not “understanding enough” of the Islamic suffering. We–non-Moslems–are not aware that in “The World of War”–that is the non-Islamic world–Moslems are victims. “Islamophobia” is on a rampage (fear of Islam that is), and the Western governments must make their Western, non-Moslem populations become more–much more sympathetic to Moslem immigrants as well as their (Western) native-born Moslems.

How can the Western governments get the word out to the populace that “Islam IS peace, Islam MEANS peace, that the message of Islam is PEACE, PEACE, PEACE? Why, by their being in sync with the Main-Stream Media–Washington Post, New York Times, etc.–in bringing this message of Islam, the Religion of Peace to the Islamophobic (afeared of Islam) populations.

Moslems in the newsrooms, Moslems on the airwaves, Moslems in the armed forces, Moslems in the governments–many Moslems–is the way to pave the road to a peaceful world, a World of Peace (instead of one of War) with–instead of such anti-Islamic sentiments as “Liberty and Justice for All”–the Peace of Islam, that does not end with the end of life, but accompanies one to the grave and beyond to the Paradise of Mohammed (which is that of Allah) with its satisfaction of the senses, perfume, wine, lads and lassies, etc.

Isn’t that what we all want? What we all SHOULD want (even if we do not yet know that).

The alternative? Sadly, the appears to be only one: the revolution.

When you got a choice between “Live Free or Die” be certain to carefully consider all sides of that conundrum–or you could plunge ahead, letting your conscience be your guide.

    So, what do you think?

  12. Sheik>>”Warning to posters:

Our enemies are just waiting to nail us on stupid comments. Think before you post!

    Yes sir. Thank you!

  13. Sad, isn’t it? Photos of beheadings, like the one above of the masked Mohammedan holding the head of his victim, are perfectly okay. But calling for extreme–the most extreme–measures to be taken to curb the Islamic appetite for world conquest are strictly “verboten.” Not by the gentle operator of this site, but by the self-appointed censors of all stripes and of course by the followers of Mohammed who stalk the internet trying to nail any site that mentions other methods than “interfaith outreach” to stem the jihdist tide that is–not threatening to, but–already is engulfing us.

One comment that is sure to cause consternation is one containing suggestions for glazing over two areas in the land where the fastest-growing ideology in the world originated.

Another suggestion that is sure to give rise to screams (or better squeals) of outrage is one mentioning the moving–transfer–of populations that are terribly unhappy in the territories which they occupy. Although these populations would be much happier when roaming huge areas that would not only be less crowded but would benefit their health by removing them from such ills as high blood pressure caused by rage, they–the candidates for transfer–would much rather wipe out the people that causes them to anger and whose continued existence feed that ever-increasing rage.

I always try to steer as far away as possible from any such stupid comments as the two mentioned above. I know that they would be as upsetting to the people to whom they would be directed as are any suggestions in any medium that believe that they are being truthful rather than “outreaching” or flattering to the lovely people that disapprove of humor, art, music, and any literature but the study of one book, one life, and the sayings about that life. Drawings, films, books, speech and acts that can be perceived as being humiliating to a huge group of people are best stillborn.

Fear is the mother of defeat.

Fear is the outcome of weakness, a coward’s friend, an enemy of firmness. Fear of death is the cause of all human fears. One who wins the fear of death wins himself. He is the one who wins the freedom. From his mental prison.
