A German Muslim group said on Friday protests were likely against the first ever staging of a dramatized version of Salman Rushdie’s controversial book “The Satanic Verses” in Potsdam near Berlin on Sunday.

Nurhan Soykan, spokeswoman for the central council of Muslims in Germany, told Reuters Muslims believed in a free press and freedom of opinion.

“But even this has its boundaries,” she said. “We’re worried that provocations and insults against us have increased recently. I wouldn’t want to ban (the play) but you can bet on protests from Muslim people. They can’t be expected to put up with everything.”

Rushdie’s novel, which was published in the late 1980s, caused outrage among Muslims who deemed it blasphemous.

The late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Iran’s supreme religious leader, pronounced a fatwa, or religious edict, in 1989 that called on Muslims to kill the British author.

This forced the writer to live in hiding for nine years. In June 2007 he was selected for a knighthood by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, again angering some Muslims.

German police said they had been consulting with the Potsdam theatre and a large number of officers would be on patrol for the premiere on Sunday.

“We’ll be monitoring the situation,” police spokesman Rudi Sonntag said. “Although we haven’t had any indications of dangers or disturbances, we can’t rule out the possibility that demonstrations will be going on.”

European countries have witnessed a series of tense episodes in recent years as Muslims have objected to criticism of their religion by artists, politicians and media who say they are simply exercising free speech.

(CNN) — The European Union on Friday condemned a new film by a Dutch lawmaker which is critical of Islam and features controversial images of the Prophet Mohammed.

The 15-minute film, titled “Fitna,” was posted on a London-based Web site Thursday. It immediately drew criticism from the Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who said the film equates Islam with violence.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Iran and Indonesia on Friday condemned a film by a Dutch lawmaker that accuses the Koran of inciting violence, while Dutch Muslim leaders urged restraint.

Islam critic Geert Wilders launched his movie on Thursday evening. Titled “Fitna”, an Arabic term sometimes translated as “strife”, it intersperses images of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and other Islamist bombings with quotations from the Koran.

The film urges Muslims to tear out “hate-filled” verses from the Koran and starts and finishes with a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb under his turban, originally published in Danish newspapers, accompanied by the sound of ticking.

The image ignited violent protests around the world and a boycott of Danish products in 2006. Many Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet as offensive.

Iran called the film heinous, blasphemous and anti-Islamic and called on European governments to block any further showing.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation and a former Dutch colony, also condemned the film.

“We are of the view that the film has a racist flavour and is an insult to Islam, hidden under the cover of freedom of expression,” a foreign ministry spokesman said. “We call on Indonesian people not to be incited.”

The government of Bangladesh has condemned the posting of an anti-Islam film on the Web by Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders.

“This totally unwarranted and mindless action can have grave consequences… because it will offend millions of Muslims around the world,” a foreign ministry statement said on Friday.

“Islam is a faith of peace which preaches patience and understanding,” it said, adding that a spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has’ in the strongest terms’ protested the posting.

Ariel Sharon is the former Israeli prime minister who is currently in a coma after having suffered a massive stroke.

Wilders defends Fitna

The Hague - Geert Wilders, Dutch politician and leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), has called his just-released Fitna a ‘respectable film’. He admitted that Muslims may not be happy with it, but emphasised that he had always stuck to the facts. He said he believes that the film is also ‘one thousand kilometres within the framework of the law’.

While noting that he hoped that Fitna’s release would cause no disturbances, Mr Wilders stressed that the maker of the film could not be held responsible for any riots or boycotts that might result, and that it was not meant to provoke disruption. Rather, he said, the images in Fitna were intended to make clear the dangers contained in the Qur’an and Islam.

He also said that he hoped it would lead to discussions of the disadvantages of the faith, both in the Netherlands and abroad, and explicitly invited Muslims to engage in such discussions.

Iran is demanding compensation for what it says are unlawful sanctions imposed by the U.N. for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment, the Mideast nation’s foreign minister said in a letter obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

In the 20-page letter, Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran rejects the sanctions resolutions because the U.N. Security Council went beyond its powers, and its actions are inconsistent with the U.N. Charter.

In his response, Mottaki singled out the United States, Britain, France and Germany, accusing them of pushing new sanctions for political motives and “providing false and erroneous information” to the IAEA concerning Iran’s nuclear activities.

“These countries should, as a minimum step, admit their mistakes, apologize to the great nation of Iran, correct their behavior, and above all, compensate all the damages they have inflicted on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Mottaki said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran and its citizens have the right to resort to legal actions to seek redress against the sponsors of these unlawful actions,” he said.

Ehsan Jami , former politician of the Ploughing Dutch party is the founder of the committee of the ex-Moslems. Born in Iran, he rejected Islam after having read Koran and following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Obviously, he also must live hidden and under high protection after having received death threats.

Members of the Dutch Muslim and government contact organisation, CMO, who have viewed a section of the film, say they will go to court in an attempt to have The Life of Muhammad banned. The organisation has described the film as totally unacceptable and extremely offensive.
