Anwar Ibrahim: hiding in the Turkish Embassy

ABC Australia

Malaysian opposition figure Anwar Ibrahim says he fears for his life now that police are investigating fresh sodomy allegations against him.

Dr Anwar is currently seeking refuge in the Turkish Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Our South East Asia correspondent, Karen Percy, reports ten years ago Dr Anwar was jailed for sodomy and corruption.

The sex charges were eventually overturned, but it ended the former deputy prime minister’s political career.

These latest allegations were made by a staffer who joined Dr Anwar’s team just a few months ago.

Dr Anwar says they are a fabrication, while his supporters say the charges are politically motivated.

The former deputy leader’s political star has been on the rise again in recent months, after leading opposition group to historic wins in elections in March, and courting government politicians to join his side.

The prime minister, Abdullah Badawi, says his government is not involved.
