I doubt whether any government has had any proper control of the Tribal areas. However, it's one thing to have them go their own way and quite another to ignore their links to the Taliban. They are also allowing terrorism to flourish and be used against other Pakistanis. The government either needs to get a firm grip on things, but I somehow doubt that they are capable of it, or admit defeat (I don't see them doing that either). The situation is deteriorating rapidly and Pakistan has quickly become a threat not only to coalition troops but also to the West. The only reason Bush is putting up with this is because they have nukes and he doesn't want them falling into the wrong hands (who knows if someone is going to solve that problem) and to try to stop the whole country going into meltdown and have them all go terrorist. At that point India would become involved, the current series of bombings are not improving things, then it could get very heated. It could be time to give the Pakistanis a warning. This far and no further. They want our money to feed themselves, they should be able to do that mostly for themselves, it's something to hold over them to make them play nice. If possible.
