Arrest of Muslim Acre cabbie denounced
ACRE, Israel, Oct. 14 (UPI) — An Arab member of the Israeli Knesset says the arrest of a Muslim cab driver who sparked religious riots in Acre is a cave-in to “Jewish hooligans.”

Israeli Arab leaders have apologized for the actions of cab driver Jamal Taufik, whose decision to drive through an overwhelmingly Jewish neighborhood of Acre on the eve of Yom Kippur led to five days of riots in the city. Jewish traditions ban the use of automobiles during the holiday.Â
Despite the apologies of 11 local Acre Arab leaders, Taufik was arrested Monday on speeding charges after an investigation, bringing condemnation from Arab-Israeli Knesset Member Ahmed Tibi, The Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday.
“It is an unreasonable decision devoid of any legal basis that won’t contribute to restoring calm,” he said. “The Israel police has caved in to Jewish hooligans. I wonder if they will start to arrest Jews who eat and drink during the month of Ramadan.”
An article published in Syria’s government-run daily newspaper says the Acre riots were evidence of an “attempt to Judaize Acre, to fight the presence of Arabs in Israel by frightening them into leaving,” Ynetnews.com reported.
