Omega Ruston’s father cautions drivers after Gold Coast road rage murder of son

Omega Ruston, 32, died in a hail of bullets fired at close range from a small sedan which police believe cut off his ute on the Gold Coast Highway at Burleigh Heads on Monday night.

Mr Ruston’s utility was flying Australian flags.

THE father of a Gold Coast man who was gunned down in a shocking Australia Day road rage murder says the tragedy is a lesson to drivers to keep their cool.

His son, father-of-two Omega Ruston, 32, died in a hail of bullets beside the Gold Coast Highway on Monday night after an apparently minor traffic incident escalated into a lethal confrontation.

Yesterday a devastated Phil Ruston said his family was struggling to come to terms with the sudden and violent death of his “knockabout lad”, The Courier-Mail reports.

“I hope this will be a lesson to young people to be careful where they go and how they handle themselves,” he said.

Mr Ruston described his son, a construction worker, as both a spiritual person and a regular Aussie bloke.

He would go out of his way to help someone in trouble and was very good-hearted, he said.

“He loved his motorbikes, loved his sports. He was your average knockabout lad.”

Police were last night still hunting Mr Ruston’s killer who pulled up beside him near a Burleigh Heads bus stop, which was packed with young Australia Day revellers, and shot him twice at close range.

The gunman was one of three people travelling in a red or maroon sedan which police believe cut off Mr Ruston’s utility, which was flying Australian flags.

“It’s a particularly nasty event and obviously we are concerned for other people’s safety,” Burleigh HeadsDetective Inspector Marc Hogan said.

Insp Hogan said multiple shots were fired, two of them hitting Ruston in the stomach.

He slumped against his ute and died at the scene, despite attempts to save him by two friends who were with him.

The sedan, whose occupants police said included a man of Middle Eastern appearance, raced off southwards along the highway.

People living near the scene of the shooting said they initially thought the gunshots were Australia Day fireworks.

David Hardy, who lives across the road, said he was haunted by the incident.

“When I try to go to sleep, I just keep hearing ‘bang, bang’,” he said. Another resident said he heard an argument moments before “a couple of gunshots we thought were firecrackers”.

“There was raised voices before it but you wouldn’t even describe it as hostile,” he said. “Then I’ve seen the guy’s legs under the car.”

Police would not rule out a possible link between the shooting and Australia Day violence at Burleigh Heads where wild brawls erupted, but said it appeared at this stage to be a random incident.

Phil Ruston said he had celebrated with Omega in a North Burleigh park only hours before the shooting.

“He was really happy because his daughter was over from Perth and she had just turned seven the day before,” he said.

“We had a great day. We got a phone call (about the shooting) at two in the morning. It’s pretty hard to get your head around … a son who is part of your life and all of a sudden he is not.”

The victim’s elder daughter, Tyler, was from a previous relationship. He and his new partner, Courtney Kete, had a 10-month-old son, Tommy.

“Courtney is the one who is feeling it the most,” Mr Ruston said. “She absolutely adored him.”

  1. Once again a muslim make the only contribution it can – murdering an innocent Man. EVERYONE SHOULD FLY AN AUSTRALAIN FLAG NOW!!!!!!!!

Ron Clarke – these are the people you are standing up for !!!!!

  2. * Ron Clarke – these are the people you are standing up for !!!!!

Well said, kaw! google “Ron Clarke” + Dubai and follow the money!

  3. The MSM made a thing of young Australian males “wrapping themselves in the flag” for
Australia Day, and made noises about “racism” and banning inappropriate uses of the
flag. Not a lot of MSM noise about the sounds of gunshots …

  4. Update on Ron Clarke – he’s “too busy” to discuss the islamic college …

Islam school dispute talks on hold

[Mayor Ron Clarke yesterday said he was ‘too busy’ to sit down with representatives from
the Concerned Carrara Residents Group and the Australian International Islamic College
before the Carrara school application is presented to a city planning committee meeting
    tomorrow.]

  5. Yet another frightening example of the manifestations of Islamic violence that are cropping up with increasing regularity. And at present they are only about 2% of the population.

It’s not going to get better!

How do we convince our leaders that more Muslims in Oz is not a good idea and that however much money they are given in bribes, it’s just not worth it?

  6. Folks,
I have been sending the Gold Coast council some emails, and shortly some letters, explaining to Ron why a lot of people are concerned about a Muslim school and about muslims in general. I suggest you folks do the same – please use facts and references to back your arguments.

Re. Ron Clarke – Ron appears to have pissed a lot of people in the AAA management – I don’t know the reasons as I was never near the inner sanctum – but I suspect that the man is a bit of a cowboy. So use some tact in your letters – a pissed cowboy can do a lot of damage. Great athlete but lousy leader – thats our Ron.

How do we convince our leaders – we tell them AS OFTEN AS IT TAKES.

Having trolled muslim sites it is pretty clear that the muslims have a very alternative view of Australia day. We are in a fight now – we will win but it will cost. Stage one is the battle for hearts and minds of the political elite —- so start writing.

  7. I’m Luke, the half brother of Omega (who was killed in a road rage incident on Australia day). I live in another country and have never met him, but from what i know of him he was a peaceful, kind, and loving father of two. The news of his death shocks and deeply saddens me, and i just can’t seem to understand why muslim’s have made a sport of murder (regardless of wheather this incident was indeed perpetrated by a muslim or not a quick glance at any new paper or website will support my stance). But even in the face of this mindless murder i want to remaind you people that “the meek shall inherit the earth”, and “blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy, and blessed are the pure in heart for they shall be called the children of God”, and “blessed are they that morn for they shall be comforted”. We cannot fight violence with violence, we must fight it with the love of God.

  9. I would like to say to Luke that love and peace can only go so far. The good shall inherit the earth and the evil that walks among us shall be cut down in due time. The time for retribution will come. How long must we as Australian’s continue to let these race hate crimes go on.
