VICTORIA’S Jewish community has distanced itself from the visit of former Iranian president Sayed Mohammad Khatami.
Khatami, who was Iran’s president from 1997 to 2005, will commence a speaking tour of Australia next week.
Jewish fury at visit by Iran leader
But John Searle, president of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV), has declined an invitation to attend a morning tea with Khatami and has resigned his organisation’s membership of the La Trobe Centre for Dialogue’s advisory board in protest.Â
The Centre for Dialogue is hosting Khatami’s only public event in Melbourne.
In a letter to the centre’s director, Searle wrote: “I reiterate it is not possible for the Victorian Jewish community to participate in an organisation ostensibly committed to dialogue when it hosts Sayed Mohammad Khatami, former president of Iran, a man whose views on the State of Israel are clearly inimical to true dialogue and peace”.
While Katami is seen as somewhat of a reformer, he was highly critical of the Jewish State and expressed support for regional terrorist organisations bent on Israel’s destruction.
