People, Learn History! Arabs did not invent zero. Al-Khwarizmi was not Arab, he was from Uzbekistan; Al-Razi was Persian, from Tehran; Al-Ghazzali – a Persian, too, (Al-Tabari was from Tabristan; Al-Farabi was from Turkistan; Al-Biruni was an Uzbek from Khwarizm; Ibn Sina was from Bukhara, Central Asia); Ibn Rushd was from Cordoba, Spain)...
And where are those “Great Arab Muslim scientists “ whose inventions made the revolution in the world? Not Arabs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The decimal system was introduced 1,500 years ago by Indian mathematician/astronomer Aryabhata. He sat up in bed one morning and exclaimed, "Sthanam sthanam dasa gunam" (place to place in 10 times in value).
During Aryabhata's time, the Jain text "Lokavibhaga" used decimal place-value system including Sanskrit numeral words for the digits, with word for zero as "shunya" (empty). The first known use of special glyphs for the decimal numbers including the indubitable appearance of a symbol for "zero", a small circle, appeares on a 1,125 years old stone inscription found at the Chaturbhuja Temple at Gwalior - a city in Madhya Pradesh 125km south of Agra.
The Hindu-Arabic numerals and the positional number system were introduced 1,175 years ago in an arithmetic book "al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala" written by Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (Persian mathematician, astronomer and geographer from Baghdad). This book synthesized Persian, Babylonian, Indian and Greek knowledge and also contained his own fundamental contribution to Algebra and Arithmetic, including an explanation of the use of digit "zero". 350 years later the Arabic numeral system was introduced to Europe through Latin translations of Musa al-Khwarizmi's book causing a profound impact on the advance of mathematics and science in Europe. "Algorithm" was derived from the Latinized forms of Musa al-Khwarizmi's name "Algoritmi".

As an expat from Morocco...Malek is right... he is telling the truth as it is.. and unless the arabs wake up from their denial and self-deception there is nothing to change..... as for the zero and who invented it, well who ever invented it it sure looks like there is nothing to do with it, it is just a Zero big or small it would not matter... it is A HOLE ... as least the Arabs find it useful to tie it on the their waists for belly daning or to hold their nice head wear with.

Good grief, an Arab guy goes on Jazeera, absolutely annihilates root and branch the Arab mythologies of the past ~100 years, no doubt risks assassination for his blunt words...and all anyone can do is make fun of his "zero" remark?

Let me be the first, then: WELL SAID, MR MALEK!! KUDOS FOR YOUR CANDOR, AND YOUR COURAGE!! AND I PRAY THAT YOUR DISGRUNTLED BRETHREN DON'T KILL YOU FOR YOUR TRUTH-TELLING.

Lynn,
Arabs didn't come up with the concept of zero - it was the Hindus who realized that zero belonged to the set of natural numbers - I say this in modern language because Cantor's work which set the foundation for modern set theory came much later. In about 600 AD Brahmagupta deduced some of the properties of zero, however it was not possible for him to answer the question of division. Five hundred years later Bhaskara deduced most of the properties correctly - however the issue of division was not resolved. The Mayan civilization also developed a number system which included a zero. but I don't know much more about their work. The base 10 system, which we use today was directly adopted from Indian (Hindu) work by al-Khwarizmi - and he and other arabs made minor advances on the work of the earlier Indian mathematicians. In short, the statement that arabs developed 0 and base 10 are incorrect. It is a shame that the Spanish destroyed most Mayan and Inca documents because it may have been that they deduced the properties of zero even earlier than the Hindus did. Given that they (Mayas) deduced a fairly complex astronomical calender, it seems plausible to my mind.

Until they have some sort of enlightenment, the Arab world will remain ignorant. They have yet to figure out it is not their destiny to usurp the world and rule it. They have invented zero and depend on everyone else to do their engineering and science, medical etc; They talk a lot but, other then oil which they do not get out of the ground by themselves either, they have nothing to offer to civilization.

Zero was invented by the Hindus - the Arabs did not discover the concept. This is well documeted.
