Australia: (Afghan) Asylum Seekers Set Boat On Fire, Explosion Kills 5, including four Australian Navy Personnel

* AP’s  Tanalee Smith helps out with excuses for the Muslim invaders: “Australia in recent months has seen an uptick in illegal arrivals by sea — most of whom are fleeing violence in Afghanistan and Iraq”

Journalists today are almost united: don’t blame soft-touch Kevin Rudd for luring boat people to their deaths. Phillip Coorey of the Sydney Morning Herald even repeats the Rudd Government’s don’t-blame-us lines as if they are his own:

The number of asylum seekers has surged worldwide since 2007, and the greater number coming to Australia has been part of that trend.

Meanwhile, our “compassionate” PM KRudd has gone into hiding…

Enlightened progressive journo’s not only provide  excuses for the fake refugees and the failing policies of the government, they also offer advice: here’s the Age‘s Michelle Grattan:

The Government will be under pressure to examine whether its [border protection] policy needs change. It should resist being spooked …

That shouldn’t be too difficult. Apparently nobody is trying to spook it.

FIVE FEARED DEAD

Tim Blair – Thursday, April 16, 09 (04:52 pm)

An explosion, followed by an explosive allegation:

Five people are feared dead and 51 are injured, including four Australian Navy personnel, after an explosion on an asylum seeker boat near Christmas Island.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett has accused those on board the vessel of dousing it in petrol but Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus and Royal Australian Navy Rear Admiral Alan Du Toit said it was too early to be clear exactly what happened.

“It is understood that the refugees on the boat spread petrol and that ignited causing the explosion,’’ Mr Barnett told reporters in Perth.

This is the 13th such vessel to attempt arrival since the Rudd government diluted Australia’s formerly-strong refugee policies seven months ago.

UPDATE. Piers Akerman, last December:

The inevitability of a replay of the SIEV-X disaster has undeniably increased under Labor.

UPDATE II. The BBC’s Nick Bryant:

Government officials have conceded in private that the end of the Pacific Solution, which was brought in after the Tampa affair in the run-up to the 2001 election, is being used as a marketing tool by Indonesian people-smugglers.

Excuses made as Rudd hides

Andrew Bolt – Friday, April 17, 09 (06:21 am)

Journalists today are almost united: don’t blame soft-touch Kevin Rudd for luring boat people to their deaths. Phillip Coorey of the Sydney Morning Herald even repeats the Rudd Government’s don’t-blame-us lines as if they are his own:

The number of asylum seekers has surged worldwide since 2007, and the greater number coming to Australia has been part of that trend.

Or as the Government put it again yesterday:

A spokeswoman for the Home Affairs Minister, Bob Debus, played down the surge, saying people should keep the numbers in perspective given people smuggling was a global problem.

The wagons form a circle. Amnesty International’s spokesman couldn’t agree more:

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees had recorded a worldwide increase in asylum applications over the past year, he said. The rise in people heading for Australia was just part of this global trend.

Michelle Grattan happily agrees – again- that the Government must be cut some slack:

…a refugee tide is swelling around the world…the modest rise (in Australia) reflects the general international trend.

But how true is all this really?

Yes, the UN High Commission for Refugees reported a 12 per cent increase world-wide of asylum claims in 2008, but noted a much bigger increase in Australia and New Zealand – 19 per cent.

Since then, the number of boat people arriving has jumped dramatically, with 276 boat people arriving this year already, compared with just 179 in all of last year.

I suspect far too many excuses are being made for a Government which privately seems to know the jig is up:

Government officials have conceded in private that the end of the Pacific Solution, which was brought in after the Tampa affair in the run-up to the 2001 election, is being used as a marketing tool by Indonesian people-smugglers.

  1. The asylum seekers coming to Australia are just a handfull of refugees compared to a large number of migrants coming to Australia each year. Most of these refugees are from Srilanka, Iraq, and Afghanistan. There are many factors that have played a significant role in increasing the number of refugees including a surge in violence in their country of origin.
On the other hand some people argue that the policies of Americans and its allies (Australia) in Afghanistan and Iraq have been the driving force in escalating violence not only in their countries but also the region. The funding of terrorist groups (Taliban) in Afghanistan by Americans and its allies to combat Russian invation in 1990’s were the type of policies that have had a huge negative impact on Afghanistan’s history. It is as a result of those policies that Afghanis are still struggling to bring peace to their country. Therefore, we as Australians have to be supportive of the arrival of asylum seekers to Australia, because it is merely due to our wrong doings (in the past) that these people are suffering (current situation).

“Forgeting history is a terrible thing to do”

  2. The Americans gave muslims in Afghanistan the opportunity to rebuild and establish themselves peacefully, with civility and proper government…

These certainly tried to establish a government based on what muslims all over the world pray for: sharia law.

Not only did we have to witness the most gruesome scenes of sharia at work…(women being shot in the head, others having their limbs cut off. ..etc.) but sharia was also used against their previous (infidel) allies (U.S. and the west who had helped them fight off the Russians).

Now, despite all the help the allies are giving to Afghanistan, sharia laws that undermine western values (womens rights) and westerners (upholding death sentences against those who wish to leave Islam) are still being pushed through.

Those who keep on blaming the west for the problems that these are creating on their own are either pure western oikophobes, ignorant fools, or simply traitors who continue to undermine western values as they fight for the enemy.

If these are not happy with the situation in Afghanistan, they can join the Afghan army and fight for what they seek. Unfortunately, they come to western countries under the guise of asylum seekers and establish no go areas…

  3. At the risk of appearing slightly left of Ghengis Khan, I would not allow muslims into our country. I have no problems with non-muslims, be they arabs, asians, europeans, or africans entering our country if they meet the specified requirements or if they really are refugees. DJ, we are NOT answerable for the massive mismanagement of resources and the violence that has occurred in Afghanistan and Iraq. In Afghanistan, the instability is brokered by Pakistan. In Iraq, the sudden removal from power of the Bathists created a huge political power vacumn which generated immense instability which was further destabilised by internal muslim differences e.g Shiite/Sunni. American effort alone has partially stabilised Iraq, but Iran is also trying to undo any good work so the situation of rel. calm may not last when USA leaves. I will not have the dregs that are the real problem in these areas in my country – understand this. The Pakis that committed multiple rapes in NSW are Pashtuns – these people form the basis of the Taliban – and they are NOT welcome. DJ, I have lived with these people – I know what I am on about. If I understood an earlier email of yours, then you should realize that if uncontrolled immigration of these people is allowed then more women will suffer what your daughter had to suffer, and some of them will be murdered. It is true that only a small number are entering Australia, but I suggest you have a look at what uncontrolled immigration has done to parts of Europe before you ask for the same in Oz.
We have lost people to terrorists, and I am no racist – but I think that there is a clear and present danger present – and it is not from being more circumspect in who we invite into our country.

  4. This website is disgusting, generalizing propaganda. I’m an Australian. I have recently been to Morocco (a Muslim country) and can tell you that not one Muslim i met had any sentiment of jihad or intolerance for religion as your “about us” section seems to suggest they do. I have known many Muslims in my life and all have been great people. I am a christian born, white middle class male and yet i am disgusted every single day by people who are demographically similar spouting lies. However i do not worry or despair. People like you will die eventually and the sons and daughters that ignore you, run away from home, go to college as quick as they can and generally try and escape the nonsense that you push on them will not be like you. And then maybe one day we will be able to see peace. I hope you crawl away and die.

    1. Thanks for wishing death upon us, Joe. Very “Christian” of you!

Please point out the lies on this blog so we can correct them.

      Have a nice day!

  5. Brother Joe, thanks for the refreshingly “positive” view on muslims. I’m glad you had a good experience in Morocco (a place I’ve always wanted to go, but haven’t). To be honest though, as a muslim, I actually feel worse when someone from my own community (like the Taliban) give Islam a bad name, than when clearly ignorant people like some on thie website have nothing better to do than spread obvious lies and hatred. But perhaps there’s an opportunity to show them that they’re wrong.

  6. Joe it’s very nice you had a lovely time in Morocco and have many friends that are Muslim. But guess what I have many friends whom are Muslim too and had a female cousin married to a Jordan Muslim and my neighbours children were married to Muslims from Eypt as well that ended very badly. What are “fool” and a “blind fool” you are Joe! I advise, instead of totally devoting your time, observations and listening to one side that is all “Muslim”, maybe you should spend some time talking to those whom are non muslim from islamic countries, and I’m not taking about just Christians or Jews as well, and stop calling what Kaw talks about as “generalizing propaganda”. Have you read the Koran “Joe” , it seems that you haven’t ! START. Let me tell you a parts of the Koran Sura V – The Table, 5:51 — O Believers! take not the Jews or Christians as friends. They are but one another’s friends. If any one of you taketh them for his friends, he surely is one of them! God will not guide the evil doers. Or how about this from the Koran Sahih International 3:73 And do not trust except those who follow your religion.” (Islam) or what about this Joe Don’t believe anyone who is not a Muslim. 3:73 and lastly
Sura [5:33] The just retribution for those who fight GOD and His messenger, and commit horrendous crimes, is to be killed, or crucified, or to have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or to be banished from the land. This is to humiliate them in this life, then they suffer a far worse retribution in the Hereafter.

  7. Joe, Anand,
The very actions of your peaceful muslims show that you are both rather misguided. Talk to the “misunderstanders of YOUR islam”, and when we hear of no more islam inspired murders, rapes and terror activity we can talk again. Until
    then stop wasting people’s time.

  8. Paper Doll,
I suspect Joe is not a white middle class Christian – I would like the System Admin to post the gent’s IP – we will probably find that it does not emanate from Australia or from an education site hosting a few “guests”. However, Joe could be one of the minority extreme left wing fools who infest our country and who believe a driverless bus in not dangerous until it crashes into a school yard or someone’s home. Re. Annand: At first glance he seems to be one of the silent muslim majority who shut their mouths every time one of his “brothers” detonates itself and murders a few innocent civilians so he probably has little to say that is of value. Actually Joe, most of us comment because we have personally met the enemy, and most adverse comment to islam is deserved. It is one thing to sit in a corner with your eyes shut – it is quite another to expect the rest of Australia to do so as well. My uncles died to protect the right of Australian’s to free speech – you try and remove that and you will be quite literally on your own and on your way to Morocco.
