A man who was found in a car with his hands bound and surrounded by gas canisters had been kidnapped, police said.

West Midlands Police said the Asian man had been put in the car against his will and told that it contained a bomb.

Police, fire crews, the Army bomb disposal team, and trained negotiators, were called to a road in an industrial area of Birmingham at around 10.20am on Sunday morning after a passing lorry driver noticed the car.

Speaking near the scene in Saltley, chief superintendent Tom Coughlan said the man had been safely removed from the vehicle and was now being treated in hospital for a suspected broken leg.

Chief Supt Coughlan said: “This incident has now become a criminal investigation. The man appears at this stage to have been placed in the car against his will possibly with a view to scaring him.

“He has been told there was a bomb in the car with him. We are seeking to establish the actual nature of the device that was placed in the car.
