Hamas sponsored a mass wedding on Wednesday night for ‘450 couples.’
Hamas dignitaries including Mahmud Zahar, one of the militant group’s top leaders, were on hand to congratulate 450 grooms who took part in the carefully stage-managed event.
“We are saying to the world and to America that you cannot deny us joy and happiness,” Zahar told the men, all of whom were dressed in identical black suits and hailed from the nearby Jabalia refugee camp.
Each groom received a present of 500 dollars from Hamas, which said its workers had also contributed five percent of their monthly salaries to add to the wedding gift.
The 450 brides shared none of the glamour, taking seats among the audience of around 1,000 party guests: most couples had already taken part in religious ceremonies elsewhere, with more marriages planned for the next few days.
“We are presenting this wedding as a gift to our people who stood firm in the face of the siege and the war,” local Hamas strongman Ibrahim Salaf said in a speech.

I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, “Best wishes and Allah’s blessing and a good luck.” Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). This is very concerning. PLEASE get it translated! If it’s true, it should be known far and wide. But if it’s not true, we should humbly state that we were mistaken, and move on.
On the other hand, the article mentions that the audience of 1,000 included the brides. That would mean that almost half the audience was comprised of the brides. I find this unlikely, given the family-oriented nature of the event (and the average Palestinian family size). It seems improbable that each couple had one guest at their wedding. (Even if the religious ceremonies were held elsewhere.) When you do the math, it seems very likely, even probable, that the little girls are the actual brides. Although for their sake, I truly hope not.
