A RIOT by Muslim youths in the western Sydney suburb of Auburn last week was organised via Facebook, police believe.

The troublemakers used the social networking site to flash up inflammatory references to police and rally their friends for a confrontation.

One update identified police as “non-believers” who were raiding a “brother’s home”.

More than 150 people gathered in Cumberland Road, Auburn, on Tuesday night, forcing police to call in 100 officers, the riot squad and a helicopter.

The tense stand-off came after Middle Eastern organised crime squad police raided four homes.

Opposition Police spokesman Mike Gallacher’s office revealed one of the Facebook updates read: “Kefeirs raiding brother’s house, everyone get down hier (sic)!!”

A spokesman for Mr Gallacher said the term used to describe the police had become a slang Arabic term used to describe non-believers.

Mr Gallacher said laws preventing the use of a mobile to call or text others to incite a riot failed to cover social networking sites such as Facebook.

“I don’t think it is an intentional move by people to get around the law — it is the way a lot of younger people contact one another and it would appear there is a loophole in the law,” he said.

“Using Facebook and Twitter and modern technology gives a quicker way of getting messages out to a larger number of people.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Ken McKay said the Middle Eastern organised crime squad was looking into phone communication and would expand the investigation to Facebook.

He said regardless of the laws covering the means of communication, the police could still identify and pursue those responsible for Facebook messages.

“If you incite a riot it doesn’t matter by which means, how you do that is somewhat irrelevant,” Supt McKay said.

And he said he was concerned by the general lack of respect young people from all backgrounds have for authority.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Attorney-General John Hatzistergos also said current laws could be applied, adding: “There is a range of serious offences where people call on others to riot or commit other offences via mobile phone or the internet.”

  1. ‘One update identified police as “non-believers” who were raiding a “brother’s home”.’

    Us and them – clear , isn’t it ?

I was in OZ when I was a lot younger , when any Pom could go and stay indefinitely . It was a great place , not appreciated enough by me at the time -I was young and determined not to be easily impressed !
I’ve realised for a long time now that it doesn’t get any better than OZ –
it has everything , good weather , friendly , straight people , good standard of living , a great , relaxed atmosphere and now ……………
    muslims
Now I wouldn’t get in to stay , nowhere near enough points- which is fair enough -I accept that you want only people who can benefit the country .
Then WTF do you let in these people ?
You’re ruining the best place in the world !

  2. * You’re ruining the best place in the world !

No, Persikas, it’s cultural enrichment – we celebrate diversity, and
have diversity officers to make sure we enjoy it – even a “Harmony
Day” to pretend that the “brothers” can live peaceably amongst us.

Strong delusion, that they will believe a lie …

  3. “If you incite a riot it doesn’t matter by which means, how you do that is somewhat irrelevant,” Supt McKay said.

If I recall correctly, the police played down the incident – no arrests
of the “rioters”, no “riot”, just “young people” with little respect for
the law, like all “young people” (or something like that).

  4. Many of the Muslims causing trouble in Sydney are the children of migrants who left places like Lebanon in the 1980’s, for a better life in Australia.
Unfortunately they bring their hate and violence with them and it goes from generation to generation. So much for successful multiculturalism in Australia.

  5. “Unfortunately they bring their hate and violence with them and it goes from generation to generation. So much for successful multiculturalism in Australia.”

They also bring the papable ignorance that drives their so-called religion. Islam is a failed unit and has no place in a modern civilised society. This sort of behaviour is going to bite them on their collective hairy little backsides. As the cops have already said the throwing of bottles by what you could only describe as an organised rabble, was basically sporadic acts of cowardice.

Mc Kay’s arse in on the line, he is a straight shooter and has guts, dont be surprised he is transferred to desk duties in the Police evidence room as a “reward” for his outstanding service to Australians in the execution of his duty.

  7. I think that these rioter will get a very nasty shock- The Australian public know what they have – and they will fight to keep it.

  8. Kaw, you’re right…a lot of us Aussies know what we have, (lifestyle, etc), but there’s also a lot want to close their eyes, stick their fingers in their ears and go, “LALALALALALALALALALALALA!!!!” so they can’t see or hear what’s going on. I believe these people are called, ‘Politicians’. Amongst others.

  9. The Labour Government is currently busy trying to shut down criticism of Muslims i.e. “Lexicon of Terror” booklet distributed recently to public servants and politicians.

If we believe in this country, we must defend free speech.
Any watering down of the language, and we are bound to be misinformed by the media and Government. Unfortunately this Country is reluctant to honestly debate Islam, Terrorism and Immigration, it is easier to try and shut us up.

  10. Aussie girl, Aussie, and persikas etc

You are all right on the money.
It is the politicians who are out of touch aided and abetted by systems of government that are now hopeless.

I despair as to what one can do about it, that will work in our current environment.
