Three asylum seekers are being flown to Fremantle Hospital after being badly injured in a mass brawl involving 150 Sri Lankan and Afghans at the Christmas Island detention centre.
Thirty-seven men were injured as detainees wielded broom handles, pool cues and tree branches as weapons during the violent fight last night.
“Obviously there’s some reasonably serious injuries inflicted,” an Immigration Department spokesman said.
Ten detainees were treated at Christmas Island hospital and some guards suffered minor injuries while breaking up the fight, the spokesman said.
It took detention centre staff about 30 minutes to stop the vicious brawl but once under control, there were no further incidents.
The spokesman said it was too early to say what triggered the violent confrontation, which started about 7.30pm.
“This was a confrontation between a group of (Afghan and Sri Lankan) detainees, it was not aimed at staff or the centre itself,” he said.
There were 969 asylum seekers detained in the centre, which is designed for 1088 people.
The Immigration Department and Australian Federal Police are investigating.
Forty-four boats carrying 2133 passengers have entered Australian territorial waters this year.

Don't curse us, don't threaten us with death or hellfire, and don't accuse us of being "just like the terrorists" because we don't do to Muslims what they do to us or to themselves. Yes, we know that only idiots oppose Islam and sensible people submit, but you should know that we are ignorant bigots, hypocrites and Islamophobes, and we prefer to remain that way...
But since you are forcing yourselves (and your abhorrent belief-system on us) we will defend ourselves, because we must. Avoid tu quoque and ad hominem attacks. Don't bother with circular reasoning either, we been there, done it. If you annoy us, you will be banned and your posts summarily deleted.
Try to add to the discussion, don't try to sell snake oil, don't try to cover us with Islamic shrouds of kitman and taqiyya, don't bother with da'awa, (we've heard it before) don't spam us with long pieces of cut & paste, write in English, try to tell the truth,
(we know that's hard for you because you are all pathological liars) but the truth will set you free, try it!
One more thing: don't think you can post here under multiple monikers. You will quickly be disappeared! The same goes for
trufers and conspiracy kooks: you get one chance, one time. Blow it out of your ass if you must; put your stupidity on display.

Take a deep breath before you post, try to make some sense, do not just vent, do not make a fool of yourself and if you prove us wrong you can earn 10 Islamic dollars for your piggy bank. Deal?

Sorry if I sound nasty, but if they are already fighting before they are legally in the country what will they do when they have citizenship. Save yourselves trouble and ship the bums back to where they came from.
I would bet that the Afghan muslims tried stand over tactics – this is what muslims do in detention centers – intimidate.

A sign of things to come if we don’t wise up. We are importing too many from war torn and backward countries who are often unwilling or unable to fit in.
Politicians assume muslims will immediately become westernised once they arrive in this Country, the fact that they prefer their own culture and want changes in our society, entirely escapes them.
What happened to the guy who had been the leader of a Tamil gang in Toronto? He was a leader because his English was good etc..At the time that he and his gang were terrorizing the people in Toronto , another Tamil gang was doing the same thing…I think he got deported from Canada or is wanted there? If these people couldn’t fit in in laid back Canada , they will never fit in in Aussie..also if they have had a spin in Canada and committed to criminal behaviour, how can they be considered genuine refugees?
There was other info about some Sri Lankans having lived in Indonesia for 5 or 10 years…Again, they are not refugees from the most recent conflict. There is always going to be animosity between Tamil Sri Lankans and other Sri Lankans.
The Tamils hold the dubious honour of being the first in the world to invent suicide bombing….really , truly , you so need these people…
Write to Rudd and your immigration minister…get everyone you know to email them. Blitz them.
