Israel okays transfer of additional 4,000 cows into Gaza for Eid
Gaza â€“ Ma’an â€“ Israeli authorities will allow the transfer of 7,000 cows into the Gaza Strip ahead of the Eid Al-Adha holiday at the end of November, officials announced Friday.
The news follows a Wednesday announcement that 3,000 cows would be allowed into the Strip. Â Â Under-secretary for the local economy in Gaza Nasser As-Siraj said starting Monday Israeli officials said they would increase the average number of cows being transported into the besieged Strip, up from the 300/day announced earlier. PRINCESS Alia bint al-Hussein of Jordan has appealed to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to stop the ritual slaughter of conscious animals for halal meat in Australia.
The princess, sister of King Abdullah II of Jordan, toldÂ The Ageshe had written to Mr Rudd to voice her concerns that any lowering of animal welfare standards in Australia for religious reasons would be a blow to Australia’s reputation and undermine progress in the region.
She said killing without stunning ”may meet the personal preferences of a minority”, but was ”not necessary” under Islamic principles. Australia exports 1.3 million tonnes of red meat, of which 382,000 tonnes is certified halal. More from WA Today
