Jihad in Nigeria

Germany’s SPIEGEL discovers “a clash of civilizations” in Nigeria and pretends not to notice that there is a jihad going on.

A “Clash of Civilizations” in Nigeria

Muslims and Christians are both growing more radical in Nigeria, home of the would-be underwear bomber. Almost nowhere else in the world does the rivalry between religions lead to bloody conflict quite so often.

In Bauchi, there are rumors that militant Muslims are preparing to attack Christians in Jos, 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. Is it true? Or just an attempt to spark fear?

Nothing is certain in Jos, a city of close to a million inhabitants in central Nigeria’s so-called “Middle Belt,” a broad region between the 8th and 12th parallels north. Somewhere in this region, a shifting line separates Nigeria’s predominantly Islamic north from its Christian south. Many Christians fear that followers of Allah are trying to expand southward, and Jos lies in the midst of the conflict.

Violence erupted again last week, shortly after the would-be Detroit bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was identified as a Nigerian Muslim. “The Hausa-Fulani are not part of us,” Christians wrote on Internet forums, referring to the country’s largest Muslim ethnic group, to which Abdulmutallab traces his origins. “They are bastards, mixed with Arab blood to terrorize the world. They do not like education. They hate civilization and I wonder why they still exist as part of the human race.”

The Former James Wuye

Pastor James has come to Jos for a few hours. This is not a good sign, because wherever Pastor James turns up, terror isn’t far away. He has just come from Bauchi, and he too has heard talk that the Muslims there are arming themselves.

The 50-year-old pastor is one of the most prominent peace activists in Nigeria. One reason he’s so famous is that he appears often with Imam Muhammad Ashafa from Kaduna in north-central Nigeria. The men preach the same message: “No matter whether you are Christians or Muslims, live your religion but don’t kill anyone.” Another reason the pastor is so prominent is that 20 years ago, going by James Wuye, he was known as a feared Christian militia leader in Kaduna, about 200 kilometers west of Jos. He lost an arm battling the people his current partner at the pulpit represents. “I hated the Muslims,” he says. He came to his senses in the mid-1990s, and since then he has called himself a “conflict manager.” Pastor James is a busy man today, preaching peace throughout Nigeria.

The country has a population of about 150 million; its roughly 400 ethnic groups speak more than 400 languages. Half the nation prays to “Allah” and the other half to “God.” Hardly anywhere in the world has the ongoing rivalry between Christians and Muslims claimed so many victims, with at least 10,000 dead.

There has been killing everywhere. Muslims have been hunted down in the southern port city of Lagos, while Christians have been victimized in Kano in the Muslim north. But the majority of deaths occur in the Middle Belt, in places like Kaduna and Bauchi, and particularly Jos, where followers of the two religions live relatively close to one another.

In almost no city in the world is the clash of civilizations more evident. Without a wall, Jos is a divided city. Entire neighborhoods go up in flames, over and over, most recently in November 2008. Each new conflagration claims hundreds of lives. In 2001 Muslims set fire to the enormous indoor market buildings in downtown Jos, which house more than 10,000 market stalls. Most of the casualties were among members of the primarily Christian Ibo tribe. After each new conflict, the divide between religions becomes more raw.

A Colonial Divide

Arab traders brought Islam to the Sahel zone about 1,000 years ago, but for a long time it played only a secondary role as a religion. Trade, including the slave trade, was more important to the caliphs and emirs than faith. Christian missionaries penetrated up from the south a little over 100 years ago, following the country’s British colonial masters. But the British allowed the emirs to prevail and prevented the missionaries from advancing any further. One consequence of the colonial masters’ decision is that schools and universities in the south today are much better than those in the north.

The military governments that ruled Nigeria until 1999 used authoritarian means to hold together the multiethnic nation. Then came democracy. A new constitution and informal agreements brought a measure of stability — for example, under new rules, the presidency will change hands between Christians from the south and Muslims from the north at least once every two terms, while the vice-president and the president will each be from one of the two religious groups.

But such agreements have not guaranteed the peace.

‘The Government Covered Up the Real Numbers’

Olusegun Obasanjo, a Christian, had hardly been voted into office in 1999 when 12 states in northern Nigeria introduced Sharia law, triggering an outcry throughout the Christian world.

The causes of periodically erupting religious conflict are sometimes banal and often far-fetched. When the Miss World contest was scheduled to be held in Nigeria in 2002, Muslims were angered by an insensitive newspaper commentary. The ensuing violence claimed 215 lives in Kaduna alone.

Uche Uruakpa, 38, can describe the religious conflict from a unique perspective. He’s a Christian doctor, and in 2001 he started working in the largest Muslim hospital in Kano, a city of a million people — 90 percent of them Muslim. “On some mornings, there were 2,000 patients lying in front of my office in the hospital,” says Uruakpa.

The bloodshed began when a fundamentalist Muslim saw a Christian child on the street carrying a page from the Koran — and promptly killed the child. Hundreds died in the ensuing frenzy. “The government covered up the real numbers,” says Uruakpa, who hid for two weeks in Kano’s Christian neighborhood and left the city a year later. “They would have to offer a lot for me to work there again,” he says.

Uruakpa lived in a culture that he found foreign and impenetrable. “I saw them all,” he says, including men with four wives, the maximum number a man is permitted to have in Islam. Some married girls, he says, were not even 12 years old. “The men came to me with their large families, and I had to ask them which ones were their wives and which ones were their daughters.”

Exodus from the North

The irony in Nigeria is that the north has a greater need for the better-trained experts, doctors and scientists from the south, and yet the lack of culture and persistent acts of extreme violence have led to an exodus of businesspeople, professors, doctors and scientists.

In the early 1990s there were about 500 industrial firms in Kano. Ten years later, that number had declined to about 200. This is one reason why many Muslim Hausa-Fulani have moved further south where, in cities like Kaduna, Jos and Bauchi, they now form the new proletarian poor.

Sheikh Khalid Aliyu is familiar with the boys who sell adulterated gasoline in bottles along the arterial highways in Jos, periodically getting high by sniffing gasoline or glue. “Poverty, bad policy and tribalism are the fuels of discontent,” says Aliyu, whose organization promotes conciliation and understanding among the Muslim population. (Call it Islam instead and you get the poverty for free, along with bad policies…/ed)

Aliyu knows all too well that the successes are modest. “Politicians aren’t solving the problems,” he says. “No jobs, no education, no electricity, nothing to do. A hungry man will not produce peace,” he says.

The Christians now feel threatened, while the Muslims feel marginalized. The Hausa-Fulani have particular problems when they arrive in Jos. Because Nigerian law distinguishes between new arrivals and local residents, they are unable to shed the label of “newcomers” in the city, which has a Christian-dominated government. This prevents them from securing jobs in the public sector or gaining access to universities. The same is true throughout Nigeria, but in places of great poverty, anger grows rampant — and with it the urge to find refuge in religion.

‘Both Sides Are Preparing for Battle’

Maiduguri in the far northeastern corner of Nigeria, with an estimated population of more than a million, is one of those places — dusty, isolated, impoverished. There are dozens of Koran schools in Maiduguri, some funded with money from Saudi Arabia. Trucks filled with children from Niger and Chad occasionally arrive in the city, and the children are taken to madrassas to learn the Koran, but not reading and writing. When they are not in school, the children are expected to work.

“It’s modern slavery,” says Bolaji Aina of the German’s Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), which supported women’s projects in Maiduguri for many years. Boko Haram, an Islamic sect, has been all too willing to take on these latter-day slaves. More than 700 people died last July during clashes between the sect and police in Maiduguri.

The country has plunged headlong into 2010, divided, without any real prospects and without leadership. President Umaru Yar’Adua has been in a Saudi Arabian hospital for weeks, incapable of governing his country amid growing demands for the appointment of a successor. But who would it be? Another Muslim like Yar’Adua? Or is the Christians’ turn?

“Both sides are preparing for battle,” says Pastor James, the peace missionary, in Jos. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game. The events in the north are also radicalizing the south.”

It was quiet in Jos over the Christmas holidays. But, as it happened, the rumors coming from Bauchi were not rumors at all. Clashes in the city last Monday, instigated by an Islamic sect, claimed 38 lives.

  1. The real face of islam

“The bloodshed began when a fundamentalist Muslim saw a Christian child on the street carrying a page from the Koran — and promptly killed the child. Hundreds died in the ensuing frenzy. ”

    muslim pigs!!!!!!

  2. Look what happened to India, and what is happening in Nigeria, and you have a forecast as good as any, of what will happen in the West.

The Last Nail in Europe’s Coffin
    By Pamela Geller

Because of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership between the European Union and Islamic states in the Middle East, by the year 2050, the Islamic population of Europe will be 25% to 30% of the total population. There will be perhaps over 100 million Muslims in Europe.

Partnership? More like a suicide pact. Fifty million laborers with families. The effects on European civilization, and on Europe’s relationship with the United States, are all too easy to imagine.

According to the SIOE, in the Euro-Med plan, “Europe is to be islamized. Democracy, Christianity, European culture and Europeans are to be driven out of Europe. 50 million North Africans from Moslem countries are to be imported into the EU.”

Muslims break up othet civilisations first, so that tIslaqm can then take hold. This is what their religion requires them to do. No point in blaming them – the fault lies with us for allowing them to settle in the West.

  3. “No point in blaming them – the fault lies with us for allowing them to settle in the West.”

    Pamela is so right!

The fault lies with us, not them. The people aren’t to blame for the mess created by Islamic doctrine. And the people aren’t to blame for the mess being created in Europe and the UK by Leftist doctrine of cultural experimentation there. The “misunderstanders” of Islam thought they were doing the right thing by allowing so many Muslims in. The thought Muslims would integrate nicely into European society and accept European values and culture. How wrong could the be.
Muslims cannot accept our western values and culture. They bring their own values, customs, social mores, and Islamic dictates with them and we must accept that Islam is here to stay and Islam will dominate. That is written in the Qur’an.
That is why the US is in deep trouble. With an administration that is close to the Mohammedan faith, and more accepting. – correction – “misunderstanding” of its ideology, and willing to continue allowing Islamic immigrants in, we in North America risk losing our continent and our values of freedoms to dar al-Islam and being thrust into a second hellish “dark ages” from which there will be no return.

  4. According to CNN but not yet appearing in UK MSM

UK government will ban the terrorist and islamic thug group islam4uk

HOWEVER this involves simply banning the group – preventing it from holding meetings and fund raising . BUT THE INDIVIDUALS CONCERNED REMAIN.

This is not sufficient. Choudhury and his miserable group of welfare scrounging scumbags need to be deported and have their citizenship revoked.
If you agree then please put pen to paper requeting the removal of UK citizenship of these miserable islamic scum and their subsequent deportation.
Jailing is also not sufficient unless it is followed by execution. They must be REMOVED from the European community. Please write to your local MP and to the newspapers etc requesting that the stay of these thugs in the UK is now terminated.

    The tide is turning.
I bet the Facebook group ‘NO TO THE PLANNED ISLAM4UK MARCH THROUGH WOOTTON BASSETT’ had a lot to do with persuading the polititians of the groundswell against Islam.

  6. Dear Sheik & Kaw – I’ve organized some links for you that might be useful:

    1. I sent the following report to Provincial Police Departments across the country; the RCMP; our security agency; municipal; provincial & federal levels of Government; mainstream press; and posted it in the comment sections of the mainstream press.

    2. Lawyer David Yerushalmi is an excellent source of information regarding the dangers of Sharia Finance. Yerushalmi offers a free on-line Sharia Finance seminar. I’ve sent links to his on-line seminar; and his report on civil and criminal liability associated with Sharia Finance, to various levels of the Government; and “mainstream” press. I’ve urged the Government to contact Yerushalmi to discuss the dangers of Sharia Finance. I’ve also sent reports/articles to the Government regarding any Sharia Finance court cases, because I want to scare them into avoiding it like the plague. The link below will lead to David’s various reports (some take a while to load) and his on-line seminar.

    5. A terrific site is Australian Islamist Monitor. They have many excellent articles that are worth sending to various institutions.

Sheik – you and your fellow Australians do excellent counter-jihad work:

Australian Islamist Monitor provides a brochure on Islam that is available for anyone to print out and distribute:

    6. Kaw – In one of your posts you talked about getting rid of the Human Rights Commissions, because they are tools for Islam. I’m sure you are aware of the excellent work Ezra Levant has done to rid Canada of the Human Rights Commissions, and his efforts to revoke the legislation that allows them to operate. If not, the link to Ezra’s site is:

There may be something in Ezra’s archives that might be useful to you.

Good luck. I’ll check in when I’m able to. Take care.

  7. Dear Duhmme Dhimmi – I just saw your very nice post on the other article. Thank you very much for your kind, and thoughtful words. I start some medical treatments next week, and I don’t know yet what affect they are going to have on me. I’ve been warned that they may make me quite ill. As soon as I can, I will check back at Winds to see what’s going on with all of you.

I promise you that I won’t quit if I am able to proceed. When I can sit at my computer again, (hopefully soon) I will continue to write to the government, “mainstream media”, police agencies, and others.

Several years ago, I came to the conclusion that the majority of our politicians are completely ignorant about Islam. They assume Muslims are immigrants like all others. Obviously, nothing could be further from the truth.

We think our elected officials know about the dangers of Islam, because they have security agencies, and policy advisors doing research. Also, we assume that they think carefully about who they are allowing to immigrate into our national homes. Sadly, a lot of government policy advisors are leftist or Muslim, and are skewing the research – if they cover the topic at all.

I decided I needed to educate my government regarding Islam. As you well know, there is a lot of material readily available, because Islam is always very busy. I send politicians various reports, such as the ones linked above; lists of books to read on the topic – such as Muslim Mafia; books written by Ayan Hirsi Aly; Wafa Sultan; Robert Spencer, etc., and any articles relevant to the problems associated with Islam.

I also write to the government extensively, about what is occurring in Europe – including the UK. Whenever possible I send Ministers, and the Prime Minister, graphic photos of riots, car burnings; beatings, and murders of non-Muslims, in an effort to get through to them. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

When discussing gang rape, I send photos of the victims if possible. If photos aren’t available, then I send the photo of the young Swedish girl who was gang raped. I’m sure you know what photo I’m talking about – I think the Sheik has run it. If not, you can find it just by googling Swedish Gang Rape Victim – photo. It’s the one of a young blonde girl, with blood over her face. When discussing these horrific crimes, I always ask the Ministers, if they want these events to occur in Canada. If not, then why are they still allowing Muslims to immigrate?

I honestly believe that everything counts. Your efforts to distribute articles to various blogs and other locations, is extremely important work because it helps to spread the word on the evils associated with Islam. The more people who read the articles you distribute – the sooner opinions will change. Just like our politicians, ordinary citizens need to be educated. Once they realize, through the distribution of your articles, and sites like Winds of Jihad – that Islam is causing problems every where in the world – every single day – then opinions will change, and pressure will be put on politicians to smarten up.

Again, thank you so much for your thoughtful post, and very nice words. I genuinely appreciate your kindness.

I sincerely hope that your health improves, and doesn’t cause you any further problems. Take good care.

  8. p.s. I forgot to say that the only reason I talked about some of the things I’ve done, is because it may trigger other ideas. Perhaps everyone will consider sharing what they are doing. The more ideas we have, the better armed we will be to fight Islam. Everyone has a different approach, and may be doing things that I and others haven’t thought about. The more brainstorming we can do, the better off we will be in this fight.

  9. jeh, I hope your treatment works to a tee and that you are back at ‘The Bureau’ in a jiffee, otherwise you are going to get too bored. Just do as they tell you, to the letter.
Your efforts are magnificent and incredibly helpful. I have learnt so much from reading this site, which has spurned further research and more contributions from me. My role so far in other fields, has been exactly like your jeh except I use:- one, the e-comments in my
e-Newspapers. From almost a brick wall, we now have an environment where my comments are regularly published and that has been the catalyst for journalists to start asking the tough questions about bad state goverment policy. My expertise, if you like is to influence the ‘influencers’.
Without detailing anything I have been able to bring about great change in three important large areas, [and working on a fourth] just through being impacted personally. By ‘large’ I mean better policy thst has impacted on everyone nationally and at state level.
You are so right in every point you have made.
Because of my previous successes, I believe, …..I know,…. that we can turn this around. And we are already seeing signs of that in Europe. I think we, in Australia, have been cossetted, compared to what Europe, America and Canada has experienced. I am s-o-o-o glad I live here and will do all I can to protect us. I feel it in my bones that we will succeed.
I have a new blog. That is how I have been stretching my-self.
    At:- http://dhummedhimmis.blogspot.com/
Keep an eye out for it. It is still being constructed.
Thanks to the Sheik, I am now doing what I am doing. And the more people we can get on board, like me, the sooner we will have these suckers licked!
Anyway! Rest up. That’s the best thing and we will read from you soon.
    All the best!

  10. Dhumme Dhimmi – Terrific post, and wonderful ideas. I’ve put this page into my favourites so that I can study it more carefully soon. I’ll also check out your web site when you’ve finished constructing it. Good luck with that. I will be in touch as soon as possible. Also, thanks for the tip about following the medical instructions. It’s good advice. Take care

  11. “Allahu ak– uh oh!”: Nigerian jihadists’ attack on church thwarted when bomb explodes prematurely

This story mentions the Boko Haram (“Western education is sin”) sect, but does not tie this attack to them directly. Perhaps this one was the work of “Reading the Manual is Sin.”

In all seriousness, though, this story demonstrates that jihadist attacks on churches are continuing in Nigeria, and they will certainly try again. “Two Killed in Explosion Outside Church in Jos. Nigeria,” by Sam Olukoya for Bloomberg, March 20 (thanks to Weasel Zippers):

Two people were killed in a bomb blast outside the ECWA Church, Nasarawa Gwom in Jos, a city in Nigeria’s Plateau state, a region beset in recent months by sectarian violence, a government official said.
“We suspect the two men were trying to plant a bomb outside the church while Sunday service was on when the bomb exploded, killing both of them,” Gregory Yenlong, the Plateau State commissioner for information in a telephone interview. “A major tragedy was aborted today, because there was a very large congregation.”
More than 200 people have died in reprisal attacks by Christian and Muslim groups in the Plateau region, according to New York-based Human Rights Watch, since multiple bomb blasts in Jos city on Christmas Eve killed 80 people. A radical Islamic sect known as Boko Haram, or “Western education is a sin,” claimed responsibility for the explosions….

  12. Nigeria: 1,000 Muslims attack Christian village: “Almost every home in the village was destroyed, and some elderly people were reported to have been burnt to death in their homes”
    Will the Islamophobia never end?

“1,000 attack non-Muslim village in Nigeria,” from Catholic Culture, April 12 (thanks to Twostellas):

Armed with machetes and guns, 1,000 militants attacked the village of Bar Arewa in the northern Nigerian state of Bauchi on April 7. “Almost every home in the village was destroyed, and some elderly people were reported to have been burnt to death in their homes,” according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide.
The group is part of a larger band of 2,000 militants that has been attacking non-Muslim villages….

  13. Nigeria: Muslim post-election violence against Christians was premeditated and aided by authorities

As we have seen in so many other cases, police stood by idly while Muslims committed murder and mayhem. Authorities are intimidated, or compromised, or both. “Post presidential election violence premeditated -Ndigbo chieftain,” by Sylvester Okoruwa in the Nigerian Tribune, July 11:

THE post-presidential election violence which took place in most part of the North and which resulted in the death of many innocent Nigerians, including 10 youth corps members has been said to be premeditated.
This was disclosed to journalists by the Ndigbo community leader in Kano, Chief Tobias Michael Idika, during the conferment [sic] of distinguished leadership merit award on him by the Christian Democratic Journalists, in Lagos, on Saturday.

In his address on the occasion, Chief Idika, who had lived in Kano for the past 30 years, said “I stand here to affirm that the violence which trailed President Goodluck Jonathan’s victory was premeditated and a calculated attempt to debase and smear the southerners living in the North.

“I stood my ground at th [sic] Sheikh Ahmed Lemu’s presidential panel sitting at Sani Abacha Stadium indoor sport hall on Monday, July 4, to defend this fact.”

According to Chief Idika, in March, inside the office of the Kano State commissioner of police, the Director-General of Hisbah Board in Kano State, Seidu Dukaka, in my presence and that of the commissioner and others, threatened that in one month time, there was going to be an unprecendented [sic] violence in Kano.

He said on April 18, hundreds of southerners were killed without the police or Hisbah Sharia’ah Police protecting the non- Muslims living in the state….

Chief Tobias Idika went on to say that this Hisbah board operates like mafian group harassing, confiscating and destroying over 150 trailers and the alcohol drinks loaded on it worth over 5 billion naira even aftr [sic] collecting taxes from the owners. The Hisbah Board has usurp power from the Police to unleash terror and mathem [sic] on Southerne [sic] living in Kanos [sic] State . They even invade Police stations to arrest Police Officer [sic] who are non Muslims with the excuse that they ae [sic] dealing on alcohl. [sic]

If you go to court, the Kano Hisbah would use terrorist tactics to harass, abuse and intimidate Judges and Magistrate [sic]. The situation in Kano at present is so brutal and worrisome that after illegally arresting an innocent non native or non Muslim they would insist the suspect is taken and trialed in a Sharia’ah Court even when a court of competent Jurisdiction intervene and grant bail to the suspect. The Kano Hisbah Sharia’ah Police will re- arrest and detain the person in their make shift cells….

  14. Nigeria: Boko Haram jihadists kill policeman and a schoolteacher

Living up to their name, which translates as “Western Education is Sin,” among other possibilities. “Radical Muslim sect kills Nigerian prison official,” from the Associated Press, August 9:

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Authorities say two suspected members of a radical Muslim sect in northeastern Nigeria shot and killed a senior prison official and a school teacher.
Prison comptroller Usman Maina Kaina said Tuesday the attackers from the Boko Haram sect shot the two people in the span of an hour Monday night in the besieged city of Maiduguri, near Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, Chad and Niger. No arrests have been made in the attacks.
Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege” in the local Hausa language, is responsible for a rash of killings targeting security officers, local leaders and clerics in the area over the last year. They have also claimed responsibility for a bombing at the nation’s police headquarters that killed two in June.”

  15. Christian Association of Nigeria alleges state complicity in massacre of Christians

“It is unfortunate that the Council of Ulamas, an esteemed body of religious leaders will be more concerned about the number of vehicles burnt and their youths arrested as suspects without giving attention to the number of youths and women that were shot and [macheted] to death.”

Sallah Day = Eid al-Adha. “Jos Violence – STF Connived to Kill Christians –CAN,” by Raymond Gukas for the Daily Champion, September 7 (thanks to Twostellas):

Jos — Plateau State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) yesterday joined issues with the Ulama and Elder Council over the recurring violence in the state which has claimed hundreds of lives even as it accused the leadership of the Special Task Force(STF) of complicity in the massacre of Christians.
The body described as blantant lies claims by the Ulamas that 200 vehicles belonging to Muslims were burnt during the Sallah day clash between Christians and Muslims . It insisted that Christians have suffered mores losses both in terms of death casualties and property destroyed since the crises started.
It specifically said that over 122 churches have been burnt from 1999 to date , contending that the plot of Moslems in the state was islamise Jos North.
CAN described as unfortunate and self-implicating, the letter written to President Goodluck Jonathan by Ulama/Elder Council, in which it claimed that over 200 vehicles were burnt in the recent Sallah riot in Jos, Plateau State, and that about 30 Muslim youths were arrested and are being detained in connection with the riot.
Addressing newsmen in Jos, the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Philip Dafes said “our attention has been drawn to a letter written to the President by the Council of Ulama, Plateau State chapter alleging that the Christians attacked them during Sallah and burnt over 200 vehicles claiming also that no arrest was made while confirming that about 30 Muslim youths were picked at random and were in detention at the state CID.
“It is unfortunate that the Council of Ulamas, an esteemed body of religious leaders will be more concerned about the number of vehicles burnt and their youths arrested as suspects without giving attention to the number of youths and women that were shot and matcheted [sic] to death during the violent attack on the community, and also not minding the killing of Plateau citizens in Jos and surrounding villages by militant mercenaries on daily basis”.
Also speaking at a press conference, the Jos north chairman of the Association Rev. David Bamidele added that in the recent clash between the christens [sic] and Muslims 16 of his member were killed, 47 wounded and 26 are still missing.
He accused the out-gone Special Task Force [STF], Brig. Gen. Hassan Umaru of complicity in the killing of his members saying he should be held responsible and tried for his involvement in the crisis.
He said , “I was there and I saw him leading the Muslims to the Rukuba road prayer ground which the security does not allow , but he led them even on the day that was not a Shallah day [Monday].
“So our youths mobilized themselves and demanded for an explanation since that day was not the sallah day and is from there that the disagreement ensued between the two groups”….

  16. “Islamophobes” bomb Islamic college and mosque — no, wait…

Oddly enough, the “Islamophobes” that everyone is so worried about didn’t pull off this one, either. It doesn’t even seem to have been Right-Wing Extremists. Instead, it was Islamic jihadists again. How extraordinarily strange! “Police: 3 bombs explode in northeast Nigeria,” from AP, November 4 (thanks to JW):

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Police in northeast Nigeria say three bombs have exploded in a city beset by violence from a radical Muslim sect.
Borno state police commissioner Simeon Midenda told The Associated Press one of the bombs detonated Friday near an Islamic college and a busy mosque in Maiduguri. Midenda said parents were there to pick up their children at the time of the explosion….

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, a radical Muslim sect known locally as Boko Haram operates in the area.

That sect has claimed responsibility for a string of assassinations and bombings in northern Nigeria in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law in Africa’s most populous nation.

  17. Nigeria’s Boko Haram: “Whomever we kill, we kill because Allah says we should kill and we kill for a reason”

They said it. But surely, there must be some “underlying causes” to chase after instead of considering that they fight for the reason they say they do: jihad to impose Sharia law. “Nigeria: Radical Muslim sect grows more dangerous,” by John Gambrell for the Associated Press November 4:

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) – The imam’s insistent, lecturing voice comes right to the point over the scratchy audio recording: Holy war is the only way to bring change for Muslims in Nigeria.
Abubakar Shekau urges followers of his feared Boko Haram sect to carry out more assassinations and bombings. The group’s violent campaign already has left more than 240 people dead this year. On Friday, a suicide bomber hit a military base while explosives detonated around Maiduguri—attacks that bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram.
“Whomever we kill, we kill because Allah says we should kill and we kill for a reason,” Shekau says in a recording of a sermon obtained by The Associated Press.
Boko Haram, which in August bombed the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria, is the gravest security threat to Africa’s most populous nation and is gaining prominence despite efforts by the military and police to stamp it out. A security agency crackdown, which human rights activists say has left innocent civilians dead, could be winning the insurgency even more supporters.
Complicating efforts to negotiate peace, the group apparently has split into three factions, the AP has learned. One remains moderate and welcomes an end to the violence, another wants a peace agreement with rewards similar to those offered to a different militant group in 2009. The third faction refuses to negotiate and wants to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million which has a predominantly Christian south and a Muslim north.
The split in Boko Haram appears to be so serious that one representative of its moderate faction was killed after negotiating with former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo in September.
Nigerian officials and diplomats fear the sect will launch bolder assaults on foreign interests and the country’s weak central government.
