Ali Sina: The Myth of Moderate Islam

In Defense of Wafa Sultan

The formidable Ali Sina rips the slick taqiyya spinmeister Tarek Fatah a new one:

Cross posted on Jihad Watch:

Further weakening the great myth of a moderate Islam, the slick and self-proclaimed moderate Muslim Tarek Fatah has now exposed himself as an enemy of those who are truly interested in defending human rights against the global jihad and Islamic supremacism. He did so by savaging the courageous freedom fighter Wafa Sultan in a National Post article here.

Abu Hamza: moderately radical or just the real deal?

Luckily, the Post was decent enough to publish this magnificent response: “Counterpoint: In defence of Wafa Sultan,” by Joanne Hill in the National Post

Read it all, and read the comments at the National Post piece also. And then consult the Islamic source here.

The formidable Ali Sina weighs in here:

Exposing the Myth of Moderate Islam

I have always maintained that “moderate Muslim” is an oxymoron. We have two kinds of Muslims: Terrorist Muslims and ignorant Muslims.  The former are those who know Islam well and live by its dictums. The latter have no clue about their religion and have an idealized image of Islam that has no bases in facts.

Mr. Tarek Fatah’s editorial published in National Post on March 12, 2010 confirms my view.  Fatah attended a debate between Dr. Wafa Sultan, the courageous ex-Muslim woman that shook the Arab world when in an Aljazeera televised debate she pointed out that the problem with the Muslim world is Islam, and Dr. Daniel Pipes, a scholar of Islamic history and the director of the Middle East Forum.

In this debate Pipes argued that Islam is not essentially an intolerant religion and that there have been instances when Jews who were persecuted in Christian countries had sought refuge in Muslim lands. Sultan disagreed and reminded her audience that Muhammad had raided several Jewish tribes who lived in Arabia, massacred their unarmed men and allowed his marauding band to rape their women, while always reserving the prettiest for himself.

Upon hearing these comments, Fatah was “traumatized”.  “Even a hardened secular Muslim such as myself was deeply hurt by what I heard that evening,” wrote Fatah.

While acknowledging the validity of Sultan’s criticism of Islam, Fatah repined that “instead of using her newfound fame to challenge the established theocracies and corrupt kingdoms of the Middle East, Sultan veered off the deep end and could not resist the temptation of becoming the poster child of Islam haters, joining their ranks with the fervour of a convert.”

Why should Sultan challenge the established theocracies and corrupt kingdoms when these are the rotten fruits of the poisonous tree of Islam? As a medical doctor she is trained to look at the cuase of the disease and not the symptoms.

Fatah accused Sultan of fear mongering and telling to a predominantly Jewish audience, that Muhammad was a Jew killer. He wrote “Wafa Sultan delivered an astonishing account of how the Prophet had slaughtered Jews and then raped the wife of the defeated Jewish tribe.”

Astonishing account?  These accounts were reported by early Muslim historians. If Fatah is astonished it is because he, like most Muslims, has not read the history of Islam.  Few Muslims care to investigate their religion. The references to Muhammad’s raids, rapes and lootings can also be found in the Quran. Muslims chant the Quran for thawab (reward), but they don’t study it and often don’t understand what they read.

The hatred of the Jews is in the Quran. The first sura of this book is a prayer where Muslims supplicate to Allah “Show us the straight path. The path of those whom Thou hast favored; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray.”

Muslims agree that “those whom Allah has favored,” are Muslims, “those who earn Allah’s anger,” and “those who go astray” are Jews, and Christians, respectively.

Jews are stereotyped as greedy in all Muslim countries.  This is due to quranic verse that says Jews “cling to life more eagerly than any other people. …every one of them would love to live a thousand years,” but they will burn I hell. (2:96)

Many verses of the Quran portray the Jews as evil doers, wicked, transgressors, prophet killers, and despised by God. Because Muhammad hated the Jews, Muslims will always hate the Jews. This hatred is inseparable from Islam.

Fatah continued, “I left the synagogue deeply disturbed. In the fight against Islamofascism, Wafa Sultan’s hatred of Islam was cultivating the very forces she claims to be exposing. When a questioner asked her ‘What is the solution?’ she just shrugged her shoulders. Perhaps the answer she had in mind was too outrageous even by her own standards: Force Muslims to convert or die.”

Sultan has all the reasons to hate Islam. Former Muslims hate Islam because we hate discrimination against women, violence against non-Muslims, dictatorship and imposition of faith that characterizes the true Islam, and because we know the damage that his overgrown cult has done to our people, our culture and our countries. We don’t shrug our shoulders when asked for the solution.  Obviously this “hardened secular Muslim” was so traumatized that he could no longer hear what Wafa Sultan was saying.

Former Muslims propose telling the truth as the solution.  We believe that truth can set us free.  Former Muslims do not advocate violence and hate against our own kin, brothers, sisters, parents, and loved ones.  We strive for their freedom and their right to know the truth. We oppose censorship and political correctness that have enslaved the truth.  Truth can hurt our feelings, but lies will kill us.

I do not dispute with Dr. Pipes’ historic account that sometimes Jews who were persecuted by Christians sought refuge among Muslims. However, I respectfully disagree with him when he presents this as evidence of the tolerance of Islam.

Islam is not tolerant because Muhammad was not tolerant. This does not mean all Muslims are intolerant. There have been many Islamic rulers who were tolerant, but they went against the canons of Islam, as many do today.  That is why the jihadists who follow the true Islam are attacking these Muslim rulers.

Unlike the crusaders who wanted to convert everyone to Christianity, the jihadists don’t want to convert everyone to Islam. They want to establish the Caliphate and dominate the world. In an Islamic state, ruled under the Sharia, non-Muslims, particularly the people of Book, (Jews and Christians) are protected, as long as “they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. (Q: 9:29).  This is no different from Nazism. Hitler did not want to convert everyone to Arians, nor did he want to exterminate all mankind. He wanted to dominate the world.

By drawing a distinction between Islamic terrorists and “moderate” Muslims Dr. Pipes is threading a dangerous path. One is either a Muslim, therefore emulates Muhammad and is a terrorist, or he is not a Muslim. Moderate Muslim makes as much sense as moderate Nazi.  A Muslim who does not practice Islam or believes Islam means peace is not a moderate Muslim, but a wishy-washy Muslim or an ignorant Muslim.

Lies always come back to haunt us. It is this myth that allows Glenn Beck to malign Geert Wilders and call him a “fascist,” or Jacqui Smith and other British officials to bar him from entering the U.K.  There are countless good people who are harassed, prosecuted and called racists because of this myth.

I respectfully urge Dr. Pipes to stop promoting the myth of moderate Islam. I also cordially invite him to a written debate on this topic. Getting to the bottom of this matter goes beyond academic interest. This myth is endangering the lives of the critics of Islam and is violating their right to free speech. Good people are called islamophobe, bigot, racist and fascist because the world prefers politically correct untruths to the inconvenient truth.  It is thanks to this myth that telling the truth has become the new hate speech.

Mr. Tarek Fatah proves my point that there is no such thing as moderate Muslim. He calls himself hardened secular, but fractures when he hears a historic truth about his prophet. So much for this hardness! When he says, “Wafa Sultan’s hatred of Islam was cultivating the very forces she claims to be exposing,” he is talking about himself. Many honest Muslims prefer not to hide their heads in the sand; they face the truth and deal with it in a rational way.

I would like to remind the readers that virtually all Muslim terrorists come from a secular background.  At one point they were just as “liberal” as Mr. Fatah is today until something happened in their lives and they turned to their faith.

Every “moderate” Muslim is a potential terrorist. The belief in Islam is like a tank of gasoline. It looks innocuous, until it meets the fire. For a “moderate” Muslim to become a murderous jihadist, all it takes is a spark of faith.

It is time to put an end to the charade of “moderate Islam.” There is no such thing as moderate Muslim. Muslims are either jihadists or dormant jihadists – moderate, they are not.

A copy of this article was sent to National Post. Since they published Mr. Fatah’s attack on Dr. Sultan, I hope they would publish this response to him. However, if they refuse to publish it I won’t be offended. Most westerners have no problem shadowboxing the “political Islam,” as if dealing with an entity different from Islam, but they shun the critics of Muhammad and Islam itself.  This mighty task is left on the shoulders of former Muslims and a few heroic souls like Geert Wilder

  1. Hadn’t read the entire essay by Ali Sina, who floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Thanks for posting it here. His argument is impeccable, and it clarifies even for those of us who see clearly regarding Islam. Fact is, we’re all victim from time to time of the same fallacious thinking as Dr. Pipes, to one degree or another. We talk about “radical Islam” or “militant Islam” when we needn’t be so careful. We are cognizant that the problem is simply Islam itself, but we’re often unwilling just to say so.

    “Every ‘moderate’ Muslim is a potential terrorist. The belief in Islam is like a tank of gasoline. It looks innocuous, until it meets the fire. For a ‘moderate’ Muslim to become a murderous jihadist, all it takes is a spark of faith.”

    Brilliant and so spot on, those words. Even worse is that Islamic terrorists circulate freely among the so-called moderate majority, and everyone knows there’s no topical shortage of Muslim nut balls, so perhaps hundreds of millions of “moderates” are culpable of, or at least complicit in, violent jihad anyway, spark of faith or not.

    I have often asked Muslims who tell me not to equate Islam with jihadism to envision a future where “Muslim extremists” have finally overwhelmed us and are on the verge of exterminating or forcibly converting every last one of us. “You, the moderate Muslim,” I assert, “will have a choice to ally yourself with innocent infidels fighting for their lives or with pious Muslims trying to institute the rule of Allah over humanity. How will you choose?”

    Fatah knows damned well there’s no moderate Islam, and I don’t even want to hear about it until some Muslim somewhere at least answers my question by siding with us. But that would just be taqiyya, after all, because nowhere at any time have Muslims “moderates” sided with besieged infidels against their Muslim brethren. It’s never happened and it never will.

    It may not be true that the only good commie is a dead commie, but truly the only moderate Muslim is an ex-Muslim.

    Best regards, Sheik.

  2. Effendi,

    I just noticed from my comment time stamp that it’s already St. Paddy’s Day in your world, Sheik, so tip a green one with me.

    And don’t abide any blarney while you’re still upright!

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  3. I have to agree with Haid’s last sentence “It may not be true …. ” I say this colored by experience.

    Finally – to all you green Leprachauns – Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!!!!

  4. In the corner of the marketplace of Madinah, was a blind Jewish beggar, who would cry out daily to all those who came near him,” O my brothers, don’t be near Muhammad! He’s a lunatic, he’s a liar, a sorcerer! If you are to be close to him, you will be influenced by him!” No matter whoever approached him, the blind Jewish beggar will definitely not waste his chance to incite them to hate the Prophet Muhammad, Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam (peace be upon him)! All kinds of curses would spew forth from the beggar’s lips even though he had never known the Prophet personally! The news about the blind Jewish beggar’s daily cursing and badmouthing him came to the knowledge of the Prophet Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam! Even then, the Holy Prophet Muhammad did not get angry and he ignored the blind Jewish beggar’s insults against himself! On the contrary, from that day onwards, at each morning, the Prophet Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam visited the blind beggar and brought food for him! Without saying a single word, the Blessed Messenger (peace be upon him) would feed the beggar with his own hand! The blind beggar would chew the food being fed to him and eat contentedly. Once he was full, he’d express his gratitude without knowing that the one who had fed him was the Holy Prophet of Allah, Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam! The Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam continued to feed the blind beggar without fail each day till the day he died! Throughout his service to the blind beggar, he never identified himself to the blind Jewish beggar! After the Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam had passed away, no one brought food to the blind beggar anymore! The blind Jewish beggar waited daily and was perplexed as to why the kind man did no longer come to feed him and provide for him as he had done all this while. The blind beggar waited in vain for the kind gentleman who had never missed visiting him each and every morning all these while .
    ~~~ One day, the closest Companion of the Holy Prophet Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam, Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Siddiq @ The Truthful One, Radhiallahu Anhu (May Allah be pleased with him) visited the home of his daughter, Saiyidatina Aishah, Radhiallahu Anha (May Allah be pleased with her), the widow of the Blessed Messenger (SAW). Abu Bakar asked Aishah, ” O my child, is there any habit of my beloved (Prophet) that I have yet to carry on?” Aisyah replied, ” Dear Father, you are verily a follower of the Sunnah (Habits) of the Prophet and there is none that you have yet to do except for one deed only!” ” What is that?” asked Abu Bakar. “Every morning, the Prophet of Allah will go to the end of the marketplace, bringing food to a blind old Jewish beggar who lives there and feed him by his hand,” said Aishah. The next day, Abu Bakar As Siddiq went to the marketplace with food for the blind beggar. Abu Bakar As Siddiq approached the beggar and started to feed him. At the first handfull of food being fed to him, the blind Jewish beggar became angry and shouted out ,” Who are you?” Abu Bakar answered ” I am the one who usually feeds you every morning”. “No! Don’t you lie to me!” objected the blind beggar. Abu Bakar was shocked, thus he asked” Why do you say so?” Answered the blind Jewish beggar,” Because when he comes to me, I always felt it easy to hold his hand and found it easy to chew the food he fed me! The man who used to feed me would make the food fine before feeding it to me!” Abu Bakar As Siddiq could not hold back his tears anymore and he burst out crying and had to disclose who he actually was to the beggar. “Verily, I am not the one who used to come and feed you. I am one of his Companions for the noble one is alive no more! He was none other than the Blessed Prophet of Allah, Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam!” “Muhammad?” asked the blind old Jewish beggar, totally shocked with what he had just heard. “You mean to tell me that the one who came each morning without fail and fed me by his hand was Muhammad?” asked the beggar. “Yes! It was Muhammad!” answered Abu Bakar. Immediately, the blind old Jewish beggar wailed out in despair and cried so pitifully coming to realise that it was none other than the Holy Prophet who had been feeding him all this while. “All these while!…all these while, I had been cursing him, I had been slandering him! Not once has he ever scolded me ! He kept coming every morning to feed me! He is so noble!..” cried the old blind Jewish beggar as he wiped away his flowing tears on his cheeks. The blind beggar reached out to Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Siddiq, the first Caliph of the Muslims and testified before him the Kalimah Shahadah :’Ash har doo Allah ila ha ill lall Lah! Wa ash har doo anna Muhammad darr Rasulullah!’ declaring that There is No God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah! From that moment onwards, the blind old Jewish beggar became a Muslim.
    Dr. Daniel Pipes, Wafa Sultan and those who thought Muhammad hated the Jews are still ignorant about Muhammad and Islam
      Apocalyptic Muslim Jew-hatred
      By Andrew G. Bostom
      There are short—term reasons behind the attacks on Israel by Hezbollah and Hamas. But underlying all the geo—strategy is a solid foundation of fanatical Jew—hatred, dating back to the founding of Islam. There is literally nothing Israel or Jews can do to appease those who seek to annihilate them.
      Dr. Walid Phares, a perspicacious expert on modern jihad terrorism, has elucidated the practical, short—term considerations that likely motivated Hizbollah’s aggressive actions across Israel’s internationally recognized northern border with Lebanon (kidnapping of Israeli soldiers; katyusha rocket attacks on Israeli civilian populations), which precipitated the ongoing conflagration:
      Iran is concerned about the nuclear crisis and wants to distract attention from the issue
      Syria is concerned about the Hariri murder investigation and wishes to postpone its results.
      Hizbollah is concerned about the call for disarming its militias and therefore decided to flare up the conflict with Israel.
      Finally, Hamas, whose own kidnapping and rocketing exploits lead to a retaliatory Israeli invasion of Gaza (albeit of limited scope), was also embroiled in a critical confrontation with their Palestinian rivals, Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah.
      Phares argues that Hizbollah’s strategic solution was, not surprisingly, open resumption of the jihad against Israel. Ultimately, this chronic, annihilationist jihad being waged against Israel by both Hizbollah and Hamas, is driven by orthodox Islamic theology, and eschatology.
      Georges Vajda —in a seminal 1937 essay [1] (long before the establishment of the State of Israel)—provides an overall assessment of the portrayal of the Jews in the hadith collections (the putative words and deeds of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, as recorded by pious transmitters), complemented by Koranic verses, and observations from the earliest Muslim biographies [or ‘sira’] of Muhammad.
      Vajda’s research demonstrates how Muslim eschatology emphasizes the Jews’ supreme hostility to Islam. Jews are described as adherents of the Dajjāl—the Muslim equivalent of the Anti—Christ—and as per another tradition, the Dajjāl is in fact Jewish. At his appearance, other traditions state that the Dajjāl will be accompanied by 70,000 Jews from Isfahan wrapped in their robes, and armed with polished sabers, their heads covered with a sort of veil. When the Dajjāl is defeated, his Jewish companions will be slaughtered— everything will deliver them up except for the so—called gharkad tree. Thus, according to a canonical hadith (Sahih Muslim, Book 40, Number 6985), if a Jew seeks refuge under a tree or a stone, these objects will be able to speak to tell a Muslim: ‘There is a Jew behind me; come and kill him!’
      As Vajda observes,
      Not only are the Jews vanquished in the eschatological war, but they will serve as ransom for the Muslims in the fires of hell. The sins of certain Muslims will weigh on them like mountains, but on the day of resurrection, these sins will be lifted and laid upon the Jews.
      But it is the Jews stubborn malevolence, Vajda further notes, that is their defining worldly characteristic:
      Jews are represented in the darkest colors [i.e., in the Koran, hadith, and sira]. Convinced by the clear testimony of their books that Mohammed was the true prophet, they refused to convert, out of envy, jealousy and national particularism, even out of private interest. They have falsified their sacred books and do not apply the laws of God; nevertheless, they pursued Mohammed with their raillery and their oaths, and harassed him with questions, an enterprise that turned to their own confusion and merely corroborated the authenticity of the supernatural science of the prophet. From words they moved to action: sorcery, poisoning, assassination held no scruples for them.
      Examples of this archetypal Jew hatred from the sacred Islamic texts, sira, and main early Sunni historiographical accounts, include:
      — Koranic verses labeling Jews as malevolent enemies of Islam (5:82);
      — disobedient slayers of their own prophets who suffered justifiable abasement (2:61), including, for some, transformation into apes and swine (5:60);
      — the more profoundly hateful narratives (in the hadith, sira, and early histories, for example by Tabari) which maintain that the perfidious Jews fomented sectarian strife in early Islam by promoting heresies—including Shi’ism itself—that threatened the unity of the Muslim community (umma);
      — and the canonical hadith (Sahih Muslim Book 026, Number 5431) that the Jews caused Muhammad’s protracted, excruciating death from poisoning:
      ‘The Jews discussed about poisons and became united in one poison. She [a Khaybar Jewess, Zaynab Bint al—Harith] poisoned the goat putting more poison in the forelegs..The Apostle of Allah took the foreleg, a piece of which he put into his mouth…The Apostle of Allah sent for Zaynab Bint al—Harith [and]…handed her over to [those] who put her to death…The Apostle of Allah lived after this three years, till in consequence of his pain he passed away. During his illness he used to say: I did not cease to find the effect of the poisoned morsel I took at Khaybar…’ [2].
      Vajda’s analysis indicates that all these archetypes in turn justify Muslim animus towards the Jews, and the admonition to, at best, ‘subject [the Jews] to Muslim domination’, as dhimmis, treated ‘with contempt’, under ‘humiliating arrangements’.
      Hizbollah and Hamas have constructed core ideologies based upon this Islamic theology of Jew hatred, which one can glean readily from their foundational documents, and subsequent pronouncements, made ad nauseum. Hamas further demonstrates openly its adherence to a central motif of Jew—hatred in Muslim eschatology—Article 7 of the Hamas Charter concludes with a verbatim reiteration of the apocalyptic hadith alluded to earlier:
      ‘The Last Hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: `Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him’; but the tree Gharkad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.’ (Sahih Muslim, Book 40, Number 6985).
      Both jihadist terror organizations believe they can now take advantage of their political gains in Lebanon (Hizbollah), and the Palestinian controlled areas of Gaza and the West Bank (Hamas), and succeed in their goal to destroy Israel—motivated by a primordial hatred of Jews, sanctioned in Muslim theology and eschatology.
      Hizbollah’s name, ‘The Party of Allah’ derives from Koran 5:56:
      ‘And whoever takes Allah and His messenger and those who believe for a guardian, then surely the party of Allah are they that shall be triumphant.’
      In a public statement issued February 15, 1986, Hizbollah conceived of itself as a ‘nation’ linked to Muslims worldwide by ‘…a strong ideological and political bond, namely Islam.’ Expressed in the political language of the Koran, Hizbollah’s ideology encompasses, triumphally (as per the slogan adorning the party emblem, ‘The Party of Allah is Sure to Triumph’) at least three major objectives: transforming Lebanon into a Shari’a state; destroying Israel; establishing regional, followed by international Islamic hegemony, i.e., bringing the region, then the world under Shari’a law.
      Demonizing Israel and Jews—via motifs in the Koran and hadith—Hizbollah views the jihad against the ‘Zionist entity’ as an annihilationist war intrinsic to broader conflicts: the struggle between the Islamic world and the non—Muslim world, and the historical struggle between Islam and Judaism. The most senior clerical authority for Hizbollah, Husayn Fadlalah has stated,
      ‘We find in the Koran that the Jews are the most aggressive towards the Muslims…because of their aggressive resistance to the unity of the faith.’
      Fadlallah repeatedly refers to anti—Jewish archetypes in the Koran and the hadith: the corrupt, treacherous and aggressive nature of the Jews; their reputation as killers of prophets, who spread corruption on earth; and the notion that the Jews engaged in conspiratorial efforts against the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Fadlallah argues, ultimately,
      ‘Either we destroy Israel or Israel destroys us.’
      Hizbollah is viscerally opposed to Judaism and the existence of Israel, stressing the eternal conflict between the Jews and Islam. Eradicating Israel represents an early stage of Hizballah’s Pan—Islamic ambitions, and its jihad against the rest of the non—Muslim world.
      Since 1989, historian David Littman has made repeated appeals to the UN Human Rights Commission alerting its members to the dangers inherent in the binding Hamas Charter (circa 1988). Recently Littman elucidated some of key the motifs of Islamic Jew—hatred contained in this document which amount to no less than a ‘direct and public incitement to commit genocide,’ punishable under article 4 of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
      Article 7 of the Hamas Charter contains the apocalyptic hadith (Sahih Muslim, Book 40, Number 6985) referred to earlier—reflecting the annihilationist Jew hatred of Islamic eschatology. As Littman observes, Article 8, ‘…a blueprint for jihadist terrorism,’ is the slogan of the Islamic Resistance Movement — Hamas:
      ‘Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its Constitution; Jihad is its path, and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.’
      Article 28 targets all Jews:
      ‘Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Muslim people: ‘May the cowards never sleep.”
      The Charter in its preface quotes Hassan al—Banna, founder of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, as saying:
      ‘Israel will exist and continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.’
      The conclusion has a subheading: The Islamic Resistance Movement is Composed of Soldiers stating that the Islamic Resistance Movement
      ‘will only serve as a support for all groupings and organizations operating against the Zionist enemy and its lackeys (…) The Islamic Resistance Movement adopts Islam as its way of life. Islam is its creed and religion. Whoever takes Islam as his way of life, be it an organization, a grouping, a country or any other body, the Islamic Resistance Movement considers itself as their soldiers and nothing more.’
      Finally, this transcript from the June 22, 2006 pronouncement by Yasser Ghalban, a Hamas terrorist leader makes clear how, as with Hizbollah, the liquidation of Jews in Israel by jihad is linked to Hamas’ own universal ambitions:
      ‘The Jihad for Allah… is the way of Truth and the way for Salvation and the way which will lead us to crush the Jews and expel them from our country Palestine. Just as the Jews ran from Gaza, the Americans will run from Iraq and Afghanistan and the Russians will run from Chechnya, and the Indian will run from Kashmir.’
      Unfortunately, the orthodox Islamic archetypes of Jew—hatred promulgated by Hizbollah and Hamas, are also being disseminated by the most respected, mainstream Islamic institutions. For example, Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi wrote these words in his 700 page treatise rationalizing Muslim Jew hatred, Banu Isra’il fi al—Qur’an wa al—Sunna [Jews in the Koran and the Traditions], originally published in the 1970s, and then re—issued in 1986:
      [The] Koran describes the Jews with their own particular degenerate characteristics, i.e. killing the prophets of Allah, corrupting His words by putting them in the wrong places, consuming the people’s wealth frivolously, refusal to distance themselves from the evil they do, and other ugly characteristics caused by their deep—rooted lasciviousness…only a minority of the Jews keep their word….[A]ll Jews are not the same. The good ones become Muslims, the bad ones do not. [3]
      Tantawi was apparently rewarded for this scholarly effort by being named Grand Imam of Al—Azhar University in 1996, a position he still holds. These are the expressed, ‘carefully researched’ views on Jews held by the nearest Muslim equivalent to a Pope—the head of the most prestigious center of Muslim learning in Sunni Islam, which represents 90% of the world’s Muslims. And Sheikh Tantawi has not mollified such hatemongering beliefs since becoming the Grand Imam of Al—Azhar as his statements on the Jews as ‘enemies of Allah, descendants of apes and pigs’, the legitimacy of homicide bombing of Jews, or ‘dialogue’ with Jews (just below), make clear.
      …anyone who avoids meeting with the enemies in order to counter their dubious claims and stick fingers into their eyes, is a coward. My stance stems from Allah’s book [the Koran], more than one—third of which deals with the Jews…[I] wrote a dissertation dealing with them [the Jews], all their false claims and their punishment by Allah. I still believe in everything written in that dissertation. [see above, and citation 3]
      Tantawi’s case illustrates the prevalence and depth of sacralized, ‘normative’ Jew hatred in the contemporary Muslim world which can no longer be ignored.
      The neutered compromise statement of the G—8 Summit leaders on ‘Middle East violence’, despite being a far better pronouncement than the predictably craven dhimmitude of Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero, or the miserable immoral equivalence of official Vatican spokesman Cardinal Angelo Sodano, is a poor substitute for the moral clarity desperately needed now. Although this memorable December 2002 jeremiad by Oriana Fallaci ‘I Stand With Israel. I Stand With The Jews’ surely fits the bill, never could such words be uttered in public by the current generation of rather dull—witted, and fortitude—challenged world leaders, Western and Eastern alike.
      Until such a moral awakening occurs (if ever), perhaps it is best for Israel to heed the existential, street—wise advice of songwriter extraordinaire Bob Dylan:
      Well, he’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace,
      They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease.
      Now, they wouldn’t hurt a fly.
      To hurt one they would weep.
      They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep.
      He’s the neighborhood bully…
      Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized,
      Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
      Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad.
      The bombs were meant for him.
      He was supposed to feel bad.
      He’s the neighborhood bully.
      Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
      That he’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him,
      ‘Cause there’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
      And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac.
      He’s the neighborhood bully.
      Apocalyptic Muslim Jew Hatred
  5. Spencer: The failure of moderate Muslims
    My column in FrontPage this morning:
    A Muslim chaplain at New York University, Khalid Latif, noting a recent debate at the university on the question of whether or not “Islam Is a Religion of Peace,” published a piece for CNN Monday saying that the answer is that “Islam is a religion of peace, or it isn’t.” Latif explains that “there is no one answer,” for “the Muslim community is by no means monolithic and viewing us as one is problematic. We are diverse.” Yet his own stance toward Islamic jihadists reveals the abject failure of self-proclaimed moderate Muslims in general to deal adequately with the global crisis within the Islamic world.
    Latif complains that Muslims “find ourselves in a moment in which we are very narrowly understood. That normative understanding is equated to something radical, despite the fact that 93 percent of Muslims are found to be far from radical according to recent Gallup surveys.” Compounding this difficulty, he says, is that “typically when one of us from that 93 percent steps up to speak, we are vehemently told that we either do not represent Islam or even more absurdly that we are not truly practicing Islam’s teachings.”
    This even happened during the NYU debate – or so Latif claimed. When a peaceful Muslim, Zeba Khan, spoke up, Latif said, her “voice, her interpretation, and all of her efforts were collectively dismissed since she did not fit into what Hirsi Ali believed Islam to be.” Ex-Muslim Ayaan Hirsi Ali was on the panel arguing against the idea that Islam was a religion of peace.
    Latif claimed of the Muslim who was arguing that Islam was peaceful, Maajid Nawaz, that “those opposed to the motion told him that it is his peaceful understanding of Islam that is rooted in misinterpretation, since it does not match up with the interpretation put forth by the radical minority, and thus somehow ignores the fundamentals of Islam since those groups somehow are the end-all be-all of what Islam actually means.”
    Above all, Latif asserted that “characteristic of any text – whether religious or not – is its ability to be interpreted through the lens of its reader. Interpretations of the Quran that espouse ideas of tolerance, compassion and mercy have existed and continue to exist in the majority of Muslim communities since the advent of Islam 1400 years ago.” And therefore, “as much as Muslims need to acknowledge the existence of a minority voice that is radicalized, so too does a broader society need to acknowledge the existence of a majority voice that is not radicalized and more importantly condemns radical thought. There are those who make Islam to be something restrictive and radical, but there are many, many more who do not.”
    That’s just great, and I am happy to acknowledge that Khalid Latif is not interested in Islam as “restrictive” and “radical.” It is also worth noting, however, that a few years ago, when NYU students planned to display the Danish cartoons of Muhammad at a campus event, Latif wrote a letter to NYU President John Sexton, asking that he “not allow these cartoons to be displayed in any shape or form.” Why not? Because “the potential of what might happen after they are shown is something else that should be considered and not taken lightly.” For “the repercussions that would take place outside of the university setting are potentially huge. All over the world Muslims have been coming together over this issue and in New York they would not hesitate in doing the same thing.”…
    There is more.
  6. Ali sina, i think you are very uncomfortable when i say Muslims believe in Unity and not like you who make many faces. hope this finds you well, it is better Myth Barking dogs sell there bite, so bark again because you are barking dog, a rapid dog basically and all other your supporters. Bloody you would not even stop any individual who would be rapping your daughter in front of you. Jihad is fighting against the true, terrorism is fighting against the internal fear. Throw stones on you and die.
