A Catholic schoolgirl has been branded a ‘truant’ by her teachers after she refused to dress as a Muslim for a school field trip to a mosque. Staff had ordered 14-year-old Amy Owen and her classmates to dress in headscarf, wear trousers or leggings and keep her arms covered for the compulsory visit to the mosque after it was arranged to promote ‘community cohesion.’
Parents at the 1,100 pupil Ellesmere Port Catholic High School in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire were also told they were each required to make a £3 contribution towards the trip for all Year Nine students. Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s enlightening op-ed, “‘South Park’ and the Informal Fatwa,” (April 28) discusses how a tenet of Islam encourages Muslims to take it upon themselves, as individuals, to punish those who somehow commit “wrong.” This raises another basic issue surrounding Islam: That it is an honor-based culture that places enormous importance on the public display of respect. This leads to a host of actions that seem barbaric to others; not only may—or must—one kill another person who has “disrespected” Muhammad, but fathers and husbands may also slay their daughters and wives if they have somehow dishonored the family, perhaps for something as trivial as talking in public to an unrelated male or dressing immodestly. This honor-based culture similar fosters suicide bombers who indiscriminately murder innocent people to gain the glorified status of martyr and instant entry into paradise.
For those of us who see Islam from the outside, these brutal, merciless and death-extolling tenets engender not respect but horror and disgust. It is ironic that the fundamentalist followers of an ideology that seeks respect with such determination, manage to achieve precisely the opposite.

[A FRIGHTENING attack by a gang of hooded thugs on an Islamic centre was last night being treated by police as racist.
The group of neds in their late teens and early 20s who hurled eggs into the building while prayers were being held in the afternoon were yesterday branded despicable by one shocked worshipper.
At first those gathered at the centre were astonished at what was happening and didn’t have a clue what had been thrown.
All that was heard were shouts of abuse and the loud noise of a main door banging shut.

I read this article in the Daily Mail – and I’ve read some of the readers’ comments – up to now a LOT , maybe the majority, seem to think there’s no problem sending the kids to the mosque to ‘learn respect ‘

” My yr 6 son recently visited a mosque. The boys were asked to wear hats, and the girls headscarves. None of the children nor their parents made any kind of fuss and bother, and ALL of the children had a great time.
They all came home talking about the mosque – mentioning the fact that the boys and girls had to sit in different parts, and also the fact they were offered a snack and a drink.
They learnt so much from this visit, and it was obviously much more interesting than sitting in a classroom reading from a book.
He has also visited a local church where the Vicar is a regular visitor to his school.
Again, all without fuss or bother, but with a willingness to learn and enjoy anything and everything that life has to offer! ”

its two way street , i have no problem for my kids to visit the mosque if only if they let their kids visit my church . please UK parents stand up for your dignity, i would…..

So far as I can tell, the ellesmere port catholic high school hasn’t backed down and claimed there has been a “misunderstanding”, or “that it could have been communicated better”.
