SECURITY officers at Parliament House have been told to allow visitors to enter without taking off balaclavas or other headwear. (You know what “other headwear” stands for…)
Liberal senator Cory Bernardi raised the issue during a Senate estimates hearing today, querying why some people were being asked by security officers at the entrances to remove their hats or other headwear while others, such as those wearing facial veils, were not.

Bronwyn Graham, a senior official from the Department of Parliamentary Services who manages security officers, told the hearing she was concerned about inconsistency in applying the policy, which was not to ask anyone to remove headwear.
Asked whether a member of the public could enter wearing a balaclava without being asked to take it off, Ms Graham said: “That is the advice that has been given to our staff.”
“We are not at that point concerned about identity – we don’t ask people for identity as they enter the building, particularly in the public areas,” Ms Graham said.
“(But) if there is anyone that is behaving in a manner or raises suspicions with our security staff, the advice to our staff is they conduct an appropriate level of surveillance on that person.”
