FEMALE taxi passengers have been warned about personal safety after three Perth taxi drivers were charged with sex offences against patrons and a fourth charged with threatening a woman.
(It appears that 2 are Muslim, one Sikh and one Anglo)
The four taxi drivers have been charged with various offences during the past week, including sexual penetration.
The allegations against the drivers have prompted police to concede there are some “cultural issues” within the taxi industry which need eradicating.
Detective Senior Sergeant John Hindriksen of the Police Sex Assault Squad said the majority of WA taxi drivers were doing a “great job” but that a small minority were bringing the industry into disrepute.
“Certainly there are some cultural issues within the industry,” Det Snr Sgt Hindriksen said.
“I guess the message to drivers is that we will investigate every allegation of criminal offences committed by taxi drivers.
“In most instances we’ve been dealing with in recent times the victims are female and in many cases they are alcohol affected.”
Det Snr Sgt Hindriksen said the Department of Transport and WA Police were working closely together on improving training and safety for drivers and passengers.
He advised young women to sit in the back of the cab if they were on their own and to take note of the taxi driver’s identification credentials.
The four drivers who have been charged have been banned from driving cabs until the allegations have been dealt with by the courts.

A 36-year-old driver from Thornlie, Prabhjit Singh Gill, has been charged with two counts of sexual penetration without consent after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 24-year-old woman on February 5 this year. (Singh must be a criminal Sikh, or perhaps a recent revert to Islam)
