Having represented Muslim women pro bono at Sharia law bodies across the UK to obtain Islamic divorces, I am all too aware of the gender discriminatory experience many Muslim women suffer at some Sharia councils and Muslim Arbitration Tribunals (‘Sharia law bodies’). Unfortunately their experiences have not been highlighted by the media. Instead some Sharia law bodies have been misrepresented by the media as being transparent, voluntary and operating in accordance with human rights and equality legislation. This is not the case.
Newlywed MP George Galloway has been caught in a war of words with the woman who claims they are still man and wife.
Galloway, 57, wed Dutch anthropologist Putri Gayatri, 27, his fourth wife, in Amsterdam at the weekend after becoming MP for Bradford West.
But last night his third wife Rima Husseini is reported to have claimed: “We are still married under Islamic law.”
Mr Galloway married Ms Husseini, with whom he has two sons, in a Muslim ceremony in 2007.
She added: “There’s a misconception you can have up to four wives in Islam but it’s just not true in the 21st century.
“It may have been the case hundreds of years ago but it doesn’t exist now.
“It’s just a stupid, man-made thing in some Arab countries. Under Islamic law we remain married.
“Under English law, he hasn’t done anything illegal. But morally, it’s a different story.
“I have been asking for a divorce, but he has been refusing me one for months.”
Last night Mr Galloway said: “I am not going to engage in a war of words with the mother of two of my children. I was free to marry [again] and I did.”
Mr Galloway had previously been wed to former teenage sweetheart Elaine Fyffe and had a daughter Lucy, now 29.They eventually divorced in 1999.
His second wife was “Palestinian scientist” Dr Amineh Abu-Zayyad.
