Indonesian aid in our interest – Gillard

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has defended aid to Indonesia to build Islamic schools as unambiguously in Australia’s national interest.

Ms Gillard said it was in Australia’s interest that Indonesian young people receive a quality mainstream education – not radical or extreme – to prepare them to be citizens of a peaceful, tolerant, democratic nation.

‘Nothing could be more in our national interest than that,’ she said.

At a community cabinet meeting in Launceston, Ms Gillard was asked why Australia spent $500 million in aid on Indonesian Islamic schools, on top of $2 billion foreign aid, when the funds could be used to build 20,000 Australian homes.

Ms Gillard said Australia provided aid around the world, funding vaccinations for children and food for the starving.

‘We also provide aid to our near neighbours like Indonesia and, to be absolutely frank with you, we do it because it’s in our national interest,’ she said.

‘It’s in our national interest that Indonesia develops or continues to develop as a stable, peaceful democracy – unambiguously in our national interest that that occur.’

Indeed, it would be. But nothing in islam says it should develop as a stable, peaceful democracy.

Ms Gillard said sums spent on foreign aid were still minor compared with what was spent on health, pensions or education.

She said the government had invested in social housing, funding more than 20,000 new homes through the economic stimulus program.

‘We actually managed to achieve that as well as doing things which we think enhance peace and stability in our region,’ she said.
