CASEY Mayor Amanda Stapledon:
”We deal with facts but the community deals with perceptions”
Casey Council rejects intolerance discussion (thanks to Mullah)
CASEY councillors rejected a plan to invite religious leaders to discuss intolerance at a heated council meeting last night.
Councillor Sam Aziz raised a notice of motion to invite the reverend Dr Mark Durie as well as an Islamic representative to discuss “the dangers of indoctrinated religious intolerance to the values, freedoms and stability of liberal and democratic societies”.
Cr Aziz said the motion was prompted by community fears raised following a planning application for a mosque in Doveton.
But Cr Wayne Smith and Mayor Amanda Stapledon both argued against the motion.
Cr Smith said the timing was inappropriate given the planning application was before the council.
Cr Stapledon said such a discussion could negatively affect the council in the eyes of the community.
“We deal with facts but the community deals with perception,” Cr Stapledon said.
“A very poor perception could be established. I still question whether this is the place to discuss matters of religion.”
Cr Aziz said the motion was about having an open discussion “that reflects the fears in the community”.
“This is not a motion about raising conflict, it’s a motion about protecting freedom of speech,” Cr Aziz said.
“I’ve been approached by a number of people in the community concerned about the application. This has nothing to do with the planning application. It has everything to do with the community sentiment that has arisen (because of) that application.”
In his original notice of motion, Cr Aziz proposed to invite Pastor Danny Nalliah of Catch the Fire Ministries, who is a vocal opponent of Islam.
Nine councillors voted against the motion, with only Cr Rosalie Crestani supporting Cr Aziz.
