Greek Cypriots outraged by UN reference to TRNC

The Greek Cypriot administration has reacted angrily to UN documents which refer to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is unrecognized by the international community minus Turkey.

World Bulletin / News Desk

Greek Cypriots have lashed out against the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) after a document they published used the term Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to describe the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in the north of the island.

The ‘secret’ seven-page internal correspondence documents dated 31st July 2014 titled“UNPOL- Sector One – Operational Order – Pilgrimage to Kokkina Area,” were according to reports ‘accidentally’ sent via email to the Greek Cypriot daily Haravgi.

The documents regarding visitations by Turkish Cypriots to the Erenkoy (Kokkina) exclave on 8th August to mark the 50th anniversary since a Turkish intervention forced Greek militants to retreat, were then published by the newspaper under the heading “Fake state north Cyprus for UNFICYP.”

According the the Famagusta Gazette, Greek Cypriot government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides told CNA that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made “strong representations to UNFICYP” Senior Advisor Lynn Hastings, calling the reference “unacceptable.”

Hastings in turn apologized for the “unfortunate” mistake, Christodoulides said.

  1. “breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in the north of the island.”

Breakaway? Is that what the UN euphemistically calls an invasion now a days?

The UN has demonstrated once again that it is pointless and outdated.

I guess it makes a difference whose stealing land to the UN, which is why they are silent on Cyprus and Kashmir.

Considering that the UN has never made any demands upon Turkey to return stolen land to the Greeks.
