Islamic State jihadis destroy 3,000-year-old artworks in Mosul museum

Eliminating the remains from the jahiliyya, pre-Islamic times, the age of “ignorance”.

Islam hates ‘multi-culturism.’ Allah’s fighters must destroy all traces of other cultures.
When the Muslim Brotherhood held power in Egypt they wanted to blow up the pyramids as they were “un-islamic.”

isis-destroys-mosul-artifactsBesides removing supposed temptations to idolatry, Islamic jihadists want to ruin the artifacts of non-Muslim civilizations because doing so testifies to the truth of Islam, as the Qur’an suggests that ruins are a sign of Allah’s punishment of those who rejected his truth:

Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth. (Qur’an 3:137)

This is one of the foundations of the Islamic idea that pre-Islamic civilizations, and non-Islamic civilizations, are all jahiliyya — the society of unbelievers, which is worthless. Obviously this cuts against the idea of tourism of ancient sites and non-Muslim religious installations such as St. Catherine’s monastery. V. S. Naipaul encountered this attitude in his travels through Muslim countries. For many Muslims, he observed in Among the Believers, “The time before Islam is a time of blackness: that is part of Muslim theology. History has to serve theology.” Naipaul recounted that some Pakistani Muslims, far from valuing the nation’s renowned archaeological site at Mohenjo Daro, saw its ruins as a teaching opportunity for Islam, recommending that Qur’an 3:137 be posted there as a teaching tool.

“ISIS thugs take a hammer to civilisation: Priceless 3,000-year-old artworks smashed to pieces in minutes as militants destroy Mosul museum,” by Julian Robinson, MailOnline, February 26, 2015 (thanks to Anne Crockett):

Islamic State thugs have destroyed a collection of priceless statues and sculptures in Iraq dating back thousands of years.

Extremists used sledgehammers and power drills to smash ancient artwork as they rampaged through a museum in the northern city of Mosul.

Video footage shows a group of bearded men in the Nineveh Museum using tools to wreck 3,000-year-old statues after pushing them over.

Militant uses a power tool to destroy a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity at the Ninevah Museum in Mosul, Iraq. The statue dates back to the 9th century B.C.

One of the items, depicting a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity, dates back to the 9th century B.C.

A man shown in the video said the items were being destroyed because they promoted idolatry.

‘The Prophet ordered us to get rid of statues and relics, and his companions did the same when they conquered countries after him,’ the unidentified man said.

The articles destroyed appeared to come from an antiquities museum in the northern city of Mosul, which was overrun by Islamic State last June, a former employee at the museum told Reuters.

The extremist group has destroyed a number of shrines – including Muslim holy sites – in a bid to eliminate what it views as heresy.

Militants are also believed to have sold ancient artwork on the black market in order to finance their bloody campaign across the region.

The video bore the logo of the ISIS group’s media arm and was posted on a Twitter account used by the group.

Yesterday it was revealed how terrorists had blown up the Mosul Public Library, sending 10,000 books and more than 700 rare manuscripts up in flames.

Leading members of Mosul society reportedly tried to stop the fanatics destroying the building, but failed.

The director of the library, Ghanim al-Ta’an, said that the extremists used homemade bombs in the attack, which took place on Sunday.

He told Middle Eastern website Geran: ‘ISIS militants bombed the Mosul Public Library. They used improvised explosive devices.’

Presumed destroyed are the Central Library’s collection of Iraqi newspapers dating to the early 20th century, maps and books from the Ottoman Empire and book collections contributed by around 100 of Mosul’s establishment families.

Isis first invaded the Central Library in January. Residents say the extremists smashed the locks that had protected the biggest repository of learning in the northern Iraq town, and loaded around 2,000 books – including children’s stories, poetry, philosophy and tomes on sports, health, culture and science – into six pickup trucks. They left only Islamic texts.

‘These books promote infidelity and call for disobeying Allah. So they will be burned,’ a bearded militant in traditional Afghani two-piece clothing told residents, according to one man living nearby who spoke to The Associated Press. …

Savages. Enemies of civilisation. Such totalitarians that they wish even to destroy the past:

Ultra-radical Islamist militants in northern Iraq have destroyed a priceless collection of statues and sculptures from the ancient Assyrian era, inflicting what an archaeologist described as incalculable damage to a piece of shared human history.

A video published by Islamic State on Thursday showed men attacking the artifacts, some of them identified as antiquities from the 7th century BC, with sledgehammers and drills, saying they were symbols of idolatry.

“The Prophet ordered us to get rid of statues and relics, and his companions did the same when they conquered countries after him,” an unidentified man said in the video.

The smashed articles appeared to come from an antiquities museum in Mosul, the northern city which was overrun by Islamic State last June, a former employee at the museum told Reuters.

  1. This is so sad. The assyrian artwork and sculptures are absolutely beautiful. The craftsmanship is up there with Leonardo and Michaelangelo. All gone now. I hate Islam. It is destroying our world, our history.

  2. Cultural Destroyers.

I have no desire to “coexist” with these Barbarians!

    Scum Bags.

There is no place for them in the 21st century.

  3. Remove ALL islam from the face of the earth – PERIOD !!!
    . . . . and islam Appeasers

(and this include the moderate islams)
as there is no such thing in all creation.

  4. Different stories have been circulated about how the Great Sphinx of Giza lost parts of his “human” face. I had heard Napoleon’s troops blamed, for example, for using the sphinx for target practice for their cannons.

It will surprise few readers of WoJ to learn that the damage happened before the birth of Napoleon and a muslim is thought responsible for damaging this image, as part of Islam’s hatred of portrayals of the human face. See Wikipaedia:

    “”Missing nose and beard

The one-metre-wide nose on the face is missing. Examination of the Sphinx’s face shows that long rods or chisels were hammered into the nose, one down from the bridge and one beneath the nostril, then used to pry the nose off towards the south.[34]

Limestone fragments of the Sphinx’s beard in the British Museum, 14th Century BC.[35]

The Arab historian al-Maqrīzī, writing in the 15th century, attributes the loss of the nose to iconoclasm by Muhammad Sa’im al-Dahr, a Sufi Muslim from the khanqah of Sa’id al-Su’ada. In AD 1378, upon finding the local peasants making offerings to the Sphinx in the hope of increasing their harvest, Sa’im al-Dahr was so outraged that he destroyed the nose, and was hanged for vandalism.[36] Al-Maqrīzī describes the Sphinx as the “talisman of the Nile” on which the locals believed the flood cycle depended.[citation needed]

There is also a story that the nose was broken off by a cannonball fired by Napoleon’s soldiers, that still lives on today. Other variants indict British troops, the Mamluks, and others. Sketches of the Sphinx by the Dane Frederic Louis Norden, made in 1738 and published in 1757, show the Sphinx missing its nose.[37] This predates Napoleon’s birth in 1769.

In addition to the lost nose, a ceremonial pharaonic beard is thought to have been attached, although this may have been added in later periods after the original construction. Egyptologist Vassil Dobrev has suggested that had the beard been an original part of the Sphinx, it would have damaged the chin of the statue upon falling.[16] The lack of visible damage supports his theory that the beard was a later addition.”

  5. The other defacings you commonly see in Egyptian tombs and govt. buildings were done by Muslims. Many of the elaborate murals of Egyptian kings and their courts and Egyptian life in general, the faces are crudely obliterated, likely done with pick ax like instruments.

  6. One of the items, depicting a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity, dates back to the 9th century B.C. Hopefully his power is greater than Allahs and he exacts revenge on these defilers. We are suppose to not insult their prophet or religion but don’t respect any one elses.

  7. @Julie from Adelaide,

Considering that Napoleon (and Josephine) were avid collectors of antiquities. It is more likely Bonaparte would have had his men whipped for destroying the sphinx and probably had his field engineers contemplate how to remove it and bring it back to Paris.

In the early 19th century, Bonaparte in Egypt caused a mania for all things Egyptian. Which aesthetic influence was used to stylize drawing rooms, clothing, porcelain, furniture, jewellery etc., etc…and it’s aesthetic had spread across Europe.

So, like you, I concur, it is a false attribution and the Muslim barbarians would have had at it, centuries before.

After all, they are the religion/culture of envy.

    1. The destruction Muslims caused over more than a millennium on great works of art and the ongoing destruction of artworks today is evidence in the case that Muslims destroyed the Sphinx.

  8. They live back in the dark ages.
Evolution has never stopped, humanity is in its next stage of natural selection. People that live against the enlightenment of the arts, science and medicine will die off in the process.
The day a pandemic happens these people will be the first to go, most of the 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide, are the poorest and least educated of humanity and even in our modern times natural selection will show its hand. It will not be because of just physical change but also moral, educational, adaptation that these people have refused to grasp thus not adapting to the very necessary tools to survive.
