“Nobody in al-Qaeda is living in a cave,” he told CNN. (BBC)

Amid reports of bin Laden living under protection of Pakistan’s ISI, U.S. finalizing new aid package to help Pakistan “fight extremists”

Funding Pakistan’s double game for another round, even while reports emerge of bin Laden and al-Zawahiri living in Pakistan under ISI protection, and even after years of Pakistan’s demonstrable aiding and abetting of jihadists, including the ISI’s backing of the Taliban inside Afghanistan.

The U.S. is allowing itself to be blackmailed, sending Pakistan the message that Washington can be leveraged with the choice of the ongoing, duplicitous policy, or losing even the friendly lip service to cooperation, such as the insistence of Pakistan’sForeign Ministry spokesman: “Let me reiterate that Pakistan is committed not to allow its territory for terrorist actions anywhere in the world.”

Except when it does. Funny how that keeps happening.

According to Bob Woodward’s book, Obama’s Wars, the status of U.S. relations with Pakistan was like a “cold shower“ for the Obama administration. And yet, Pakistan is in line for another $2 billion funded on the backs of the American taxpayer. “Sources:U.S. finalizing aid package to help Pakistan fight extremists,” by Elise Labott for CNN, October 18/via JW:

Washington (CNN) — The Obama administration is putting the final touches on a security assistance package totaling as much as $2 billion over five years to help Pakistan fight extremists on its border with Afghanistan, senior U.S. officials and diplomatic sources tell CNN.

The aid is expected to be announced later this week when Pakistani officials are in Washington to hold high-level talks.

The package aims to address Pakistan’s insistence it does not have the capability to go after terrorists, and needs more support from the United States, the sources said. The aid will help the Pakistanis purchase helicopters, weapons systems and equipment to intercept communications.

They need more support, they say, after squandering money financing the jihad against India and propping up jihadist groups in Kashmir.

It falls under the United States’ Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program, which provides grants and loans to countries to purchase weapons and defense equipment produced in the United States. It also includes more counterinsurgency assistance to Pakistani troops and a program allowing members of the Pakistani military to study at American war colleges.

The $2 billion package is on top of billions of dollars the United States already gives Pakistan in military aid and a $7.5 billion aid package over five years in non-military counter-terrorism assistance approved by Congress last year.

“They [sic] key is to beef up their ability to go after militants, it can’t be diverted to other threats,” one senior U.S. official said.

Pakistan has long claimed its military is geared toward defending itself against threats from countries like India, and does not have the kind of equipment it needs to fight insurgents. U.S. officials said they recognize Pakistan’s current military hardware is not perfectly suited toward such operations, but made clear the new aid must be directed toward fighting extremists, rather than India….

There is that military adage: “Hope is not a method.” What substantive measures is Washington willing to take to avoid funding the jihad with taxpayer money via Islamabad?

CLIMATE CHANGE IS WORSE THAN WAR SAYS…OSAMA BIN LADEN

Former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore found an unlikely ally in his mission to save the world from the ravages of global warming – Osama bin Laden. In a new audiotape released by Al Jazeera, the terrorist warns that it is industrialized nations that are to blame and urged “drastic solutions” to solve the climate change crisis. (support the climate terrorists!)

United Climate Changers

CAIRO (AP) — Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden sought to drum up support by taking advantage of Pakistan’s flood tragedy with a new audiotape released Friday criticizing Muslim governments for their slow response and calling for the creation of a new relief body to aid Muslims.

Its worse than you think:

The Jeddah Economic Forum — at which Al Gore spewed some of the most inflammatory anti-American propaganda this side of al-Jazeera — was funded in part by Osama bin Laden’s family. Jeddah is bin Laden’s home town.

In January 2002, Bill Clinton was paid $267,000 to address this same forum. You may remember Clinton as the randy ex-President who responded to September 11 by publicly spitting up stuff like this:

Those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless. Indeed, in the first Crusade, when the Christian soldiers took Jerusalem, they first burned a synagogue with 300 Jews in it, and proceeded to kill every woman and child who was Muslim on the Temple mound. The contemporaneous descriptions of the event describe soldiers walking on the Temple mound, a holy place to Christians, with blood running up to their knees. I can tell you that that story is still being told to today in the Middle East and we are still paying for it. Here in the United States, we were founded as a nation that practiced slavery and slaves were, quite frequently, killed even though they were innocent. This country once looked the other way when significant numbers of Native Americans were dispossessed and killed to get their land or their mineral rights or because they were thought of as less than fully human and we are still paying the price today. Even in the 20th century in America people were terrorized or killed because of their race.

America was spared the catastrophe of an Al Gore presidency. But that doesn’t mean al-Gore can’t follow in Slick Willie’s footsteps.

(Moonbattery has more)

The Goracle gets shouted down: “Global warming is a fraud!”

It was the third message in recent weeks from al-Qaida figures concerning the massive August floods that displaced 8 million people in Pakistan, signaling a concentrated campaign by the terror group to exploit public discontent and present itself as protectors of the poor.

“What governments spend on relief work is secondary to what it spends on its armies,” bin Laden says on the 11-minute tape called, “Reflections on the Method of Relief Work.” The authenticity of the tape could not be immediately verified.

The top al-Qaida leader said a new “well-funded” relief organization should be created to study Muslim regions near bodies of water to prevent future flooding, to create development projects in impoverished regions and to work on farming and agriculture to guarantee food security.

He called on Muslim merchants to direct their resources to cultivating agricultural land in countries like Sudan that aren’t used for farming.

“Merchants are the knights who will save this region from famine and must avoid investing in worthless projects,” he said.

The audiotape was posted on Islamic militant websites, according to the U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi forums and provided a copy of the message. The tape is aired over a still photograph of a smiling bin Laden superimposed over a picture of a man distributing aid.

Bin Laden makes common cause with the warmists

Andrew Bolt:

Osama bin Laden is naturally a global warming worrier, too, being an enemy of modernity and its freedoms:

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming, according to a new audiotape released Friday.

In the tape, broadcast in part on Al-Jazeera television, bin Laden warned of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring “the wheels of the American economy” to a halt.

He blamed Western industrialized nations for hunger, desertification and floods across the globe, and called for “drastic solutions” to global warming, and “not solutions that partially reduce the effect of climate change.”

Related:

Osama bin Laden joins Al Gore in fighting manmade climate change

Climate Change Fraud – Because the debate is not over

Of course, bin Laden may just be appealling for allies in his crusade to bring back the Stone Age. Interesting that he feels they may be found among global warming extremists.

And indeed:

The speech, which included almost no religious rhetoric, could be an attempt by the terror leader to give his message an appeal beyond Islamic militants.

Is bin Laden’s endorsement of global warming science what they mean by “peer review”? And what will be this joint movement’s slogan: Save the planet! Destroy America.

Norway: Muslims need a state of their own, says Krekar

… and bin Laden would make a good leader for the coming caliphate, sez the Mosquito sheik. “The West can continue to exits as long as they accept the Caliphate as a dominating power in the world…”

Any buyers…?

Islam in Europe

Interestingly enough, in his book Krekar, who considers himself a true Muslim scholar, is very dismissive of Osama bin Laden and most other ‘leaders’ whom he thinks do not really know Islamic law. And yet, here he suggests Bin Laden as the next Caliph [ie, Mohammed's stand-in].

The entire interview is available on YouTube (in Arabic).

In a new interview Mulla Krekar says that he wishes Osama bin Laden and other radical Islamist leaders will be heads of an Islamic super-state.

“The Muslims will become like the Jews in Europe, right until they establish a caliphate [ed: Islamic state]. Without a state we have no value,” says mulla Krekar in a new interview with the al-Hiwar TV channel.

The interview was broadcast on the Arab satellite channel in October, and is accessible on YouTube. Neither the Norwegian nor the international press mentioned this interview earlier.

In the interview mulla Krekar speaks with the Islamist scholar Azzaz Tamimi. In the long interview conducted in the mulla’s home in Grønland, Oslo, he also deals with the conditions for dialog with the West. In this context Krekar clarifies what he thinks of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

“When we have an Islamic state, lead by one like Osama Bin Ladne, with a foreign minister like Gulbuddin Hekmatyar or Ayman Al-Zawahiri, then we can speak with them [ed: the West], as equal parties,” says Krekar.

Hekmatyar is the leader of the Taliban-allied party Hezb-e Islami in Afghanistan. Al-Zawahiri is bin Laden’s deputy in the al-Qaeda terror network.

The interviewer Tamimi, who like Krekar has a background in the Islamist movement the Muslim Brotherhood, confronts the mulla saying his statement will make the Norwegians afraid.

“This, that you hope for an Islamic state led by Osama bin Laden, it makes the Norwegians scared?,” asks Tamimi.

“Yes… even if it scares them – good!”

Krekar doesn’t regret the interview with the Arab TV channel.

“What do I have to lose in this interview? I get attention from south and north regardless. This interview doesn’t hurt me,” Krekar said in commentary to VG Nett.

Q: Do you support Osama bin Laden?

A: I describe him as he is, I compare him. If I supported al-Qaeda, I would say it without fear,” says Krekar and repeats that he has no connections with the terror network.

In the interview Krekar uses the word “Caliphate” to describe the state where he sees the al-Qaeda heads as leaders.

“The Caliphate is the final station for this movement. Jihadists think that all borders are illegitimate. With the exception of the Islamic emirate under the Taliban, no state today is legitimate in their eyes. The Jihadis are engaged in winning territorial control, doesn’t matter where, and establishing emirate they think will expand and overlap each other and then grow together into an over-national unit,” says terrorism expert Brynjar Lia of the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment.

“But they’re less clear on what this will be and how it should look.”

Q: Krekar says that when such a Caliphate is founded, it can be relevant to have dialog?

A: This is not so different from what Zawahiri and others have said. If the USA pulls back from the Islamic world and Israel stops to exist, the Jihadists can consider dialog. The West can continue to exits as long as they accept the Caliphate as a dominating power in the world. They have offered a ceasefire several time to the Americans and Europeans, but not to Israel and the Jews.

In the interview Krekar says that he won’t rule out that in 20 years there can be an Islamic state led by Osama bin Laden, and suggest that Muslims should treat the est in the same way the West treats Muslims.

“Which of our enemies aren’t like us? Why are we not proud of those who stand in the middle of the battle and frightens the world’s biggest superpower?” asks Krekar rhetorically and points to the fact that Israeli and American leaders also boast of their own efforts in war.

In the interview he also claims that the Jihadist Islamist group Ansar al-Islam continues to fight against the Americans in Iraq and controls several areas there, though he admits that the resistance has weakened after the Americans allied with the Sunni Muslim tribe leaders in order to limit the uprising.

“Thank God,” says Krekar to VG Nett about Ansar al-Islam’s ongoing activities.

Q: Do you have any connection with them today?

A: “I have nothing to do with them,” says Krekar and end the short telephone interview with VG Nett.

A Muslim police officer, who claims a boss compared him to Osama Bin Laden, was fined for boasting about his sexual performance and use of Viagra, it emerged yesterday.

An employment tribunal heard how Pc Tariq Dost, 40, from Birmingham, who is claiming racial and religious discrimination against West Midlands Police, was fined 13 days’ pay and “came close to dismissal” over the incident.

Pc Dost was disciplined in October last year for discussing the sex drug with colleagues and telling one “she won’t be able to walk when you’re finished with her”. He also admitted failing to act with respect towards a fellow officer after an incident in which he allegedly accused another Pc of planting drugs on a suspect.

The recruitment officer was also given managerial advice over his attitude to women, after allegedly discussing the size of a potential recruit’s breasts.

Detective Superintendent Piers Westlake, the acting head of disciplinary issues at West Midlands Police, said he regarded the complaints against Pc Dost as “very serious”. “Pc Dost was a positive action officer,” he told the tribunal.

“His job was to mentor people to apply to the police force with particular focus on ethnic minorities and women. I was concerned about his credibility and, in particular, his attitude towards women.”

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) – A Yemeni prisoner watched an al Qaeda recruiting video with his Guantanamo interrogator and proudly admitted producing the work, the interrogator testified in the U.S. war crimes court on Wednesday.

“He considered it one of the best propaganda videos al Qaeda has to date,” former FBI special agent Ali Soufan testified in the U.S. war crimes trial of defendant Ali Hamza al Bahlul.

Osama bin Laden was so impressed with the video that he promoted Bahlul to become his media secretary, the FBI agent quoted Bahlul as telling him.

Bahlul is on trial at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on charges of conspiring with al Qaeda to commit murderous attacks, soliciting to commit murder and providing material support for terrorism. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Bahlul was captured near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and sent to the Guantanamo detention center in early 2002. When Soufan showed him the video during an interrogation, Bahlul said it had taken him six months to piece together on his laptop computer using Adobe software, television news images and footage of bin Laden speeches.

The production summarized the state of the Muslim world and blamed America and Israel for all its woes.

It included a segment titled “The Destruction of the American Destroyer USS Cole,” praising the suicide bombers who drove an explosives-filled boat into the side of the American warship at the Yemeni port of Aden in 2000. The blast blew a hole in the side of the Cole and killed 17 U.S. sailors.

Prosecutors said the video was shown at al Qaeda camps to persuade trainees that becoming suicide bombers was a righteous cause.

Soufan said Bahlul told him al Qaeda expected the Cole attack would lure a new wave of recruits to the anti U.S.-war that they believed to be the start of Armageddon, the final battle between good and evil.

Prosecutors showed the video to the jury of nine U.S. military officers on Wednesday. It showed starving and crying children, mangled and blood-spattered bodies and scenes of Muslims under attack in Bosnia, Chechnya and the Palestinian territories.

Gruesome images alternated with footage of Osama bin Laden saying, “The Jews are free to do whatever they wish with Muslim women … the child dies in the arms of his mother.”

In the piece, bin Laden urges Muslims to abandon their fear of dying and avenge the bloodshed.

The work is titled in flaming letters and punctuated with the sound of gun blasts, sobbing and Koranic verse. Bahlul used special effects to superimpose a cartoonish blast over a news photograph of the damaged Cole.

Bahlul sat at the defense table beaming with pride during some segments and nodding in agreement at the bin Laden portions. He pounded his fist on the table once at the mention of the defilement of Muslim women.

Soufan testified that Bahlul had told him, “Everything I believe is in that tape.”

Bahlul, a slightly built man with a short, dark beard, was denied permission to act as his own attorney. His U.S. military lawyer is honoring his request not to put on any defense in the tribunal that Bahlul previously called “a farce.”

His trial is the second full test of the special tribunals created to try non-U.S. citizens outside the regular civilian and military courts.

About 255 suspected members of al Qaeda, the Taliban and associated groups are now being detained at Guantanamo. More than 750 non-U.S. captives suspected of terrorism have been held without trial at the base in the seven years since President George W. Bush declared a war against terrorism.

(CBS) The man who led the Pentagon’s mission to kill Osama bin Laden says the Afghan allies he was forced to use may have undermined his operation. He also tells correspondent Scott Pelley his superiors scuttled the most effective plan of attack against the al Qaeda leader.

The former Delta Force officer, who uses the pseudonym “Dalton Fury,” tells his story for the first time on 60 Minutes, this Sunday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Ten weeks after 9/11, Fury and a team of U.S. Army Delta Force soldiers joined CIA operatives and Afghan fighters known as mujahideen under the command of a warlord named General Hazrat Ali, to whom the CIA paid millions in cash. The Americans and Afghans pursued bin Laden and an estimated 1,000 al Qaeda fighters into the Tora Bora Mountains, near the border with Pakistan. The U.S. strategy, says Fury, was to let Afghan allies do most of the fighting, while U.S. Special Operations Forces directed air strikes and provided support.

The problem, according to Fury, was that Ali’s mujahideen would attack up the mountain by day and retreat at night, giving up territory they’d won. Today, Fury wonders whether some of the supposedly friendly Afghans were really conspiring with al Qaeda. “The mujahideen would go up and get into a skirmish…lose a guy or two, maybe kill an al-Qaeda guy or two and then they leave…almost like it was an agreement…Put on a good show and then leave,” recalls Fury, a retired Army major.

As the U.S. and Afghan forces listened to bin Laden’s radio communications, Fury noticed the Afghan’s demeanor. “These guys in my opinion were more in awe of Osama bin Laden than they were willing to kill him,” he tells Pelley. “…They could almost see him and feel his presence and they just stood there with wide eyes and somewhat in awe that here is the leader of the jihad…and they’re actually hearing his voice over the radio.”

Fury’s soldiers continued their frontal assault on the Tora Bora mountainside battlefield by day, when Ali’s mujahideen would rejoin them. But that’s not the plan Fury thought would work best. “We wanted to come in on the back door.” The initial plan to climb the mountain from the Pakistan side and surprise the enemy was denied. “Whether that was central command [or] all the way up to the president of the United States, I’m not sure,” he says.

Such a denial was unheard of, according to Fury. “In my experience, in my five years at Delta, never before.” His superiors also rejected a plan to drop landmines from the air on bin Laden’s likely escape route to Pakistan.

At one point, Fury led a team deep into Tora Bora to rescue Americans who had come under fire. That rescue mission may have brought Fury as close as he ever came to bin Laden. But, it was night and Afghan allies had gone home. Fury was under orders to have Afghan fighters take the lead, and intelligence said bin Laden was protected by more than a thousand hardened fighters. Fury decided to postpone the attack until morning.

“Had we gone up that ridgeline towards that location, Osama bin Laden may have been 500 meters away. We might have run right into him,” Fury tells Pelley. In the book Fury wrote about the mission,Kill Bin Laden, he writes that his decision to abort that effort left him with the feeling he had let down the nation. In his interview with Pelley, he says, “It wasn’t worth the risk at that particular moment to go up there and play cowboy.”

The next time Delta had a lead on bin Laden, they thought he entered a cave with about 50 men. The Americans called in every available bomb and bombarded the cave for hours. Fury believed they’d killed the al Qaeda leader at that time. When bin Laden released a video in 2004, Fury was disappointed. Now he believes, based on intelligence, that bin Laden was injured in the shoulder by shrapnel and then treated and hidden by local sympathizers. He escaped to Pakistan days later, perhaps by car. “He moved as far as he could and then got out and either walked across or was carried across into Pakistan, free and clear,” Fury tells Pelley.
