Turkey to EU: No visa-free, no clampdown on migrants

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - (H/T Peperud) Turkey is happy to sign a migrant readmission deal with the EU, but expects the Union to start talks on visa-free travel if it wants to see a clampdown on people sneaking into Greece, a senior diplomat has said.

Noting that the EU has lifted visa requirements for “remote countries,” such as Paraguay and Uruguay, and started visa-free talks with Moldova, Russia and Ukraine, but not Turkey, Ankara’s chief negotiator on EU accession, Egemen Bagis, said: “It’s time to put an end to this nonsense.”

Speaking at a gathering of EU officials and diplomats at the European Policy Centre think-tank in Brussels on Thursday morning (27 January), Mr Bagis lambasted the EU for calling on Ankara to stem irregular migration from Africa and Asia while giving it nothing on visas.

A demand for jiziya/tribute:

“We’re willing to help the EU, but it’s also a matter of taxation,” he said, referring Turkish tax income used to fund the anti-migrant operations. “When our citizens are insulted on a daily basis in the consulates of EU states [when they apply for visas], one may ask the question as to why we should help the EU with their problems, when we are treated this way. Turkey is not an emirate, public opinion does matter. We need to see some good will from the side of the EU.”

Mr Bagis questioned the value of a Greek plan to build a 12km-long anti-migrant wall on its massive sea and land border with Turkey. “Greece can do whatever it wants on its territory, but there’s also a whole Aegean Sea to take care of,” he said.

He added that the EU is focusing too much on border security instead of tackling the top cause of irregular migration in source countries: poverty. “When people are desperate and hopeless in their own country, they will do anything to get out. If we stop them, they will go to Ukraine and Belarus. In the end, they will find a way to get into the EU,” he said.

Mr Bagis noted that 70,000 people were detained in 2010 trying to get into the Union.

The EU and Turkey on Thursday agreed a common text on readmission of irregular migrants – a pre-condition for starting visa-free talks in future. “We’ll sign the readmission agreement without having free travel into the EU first, but at least the European Commission should be given a mandate to start visa-free regime talks with Turkey,” he noted.

The Turkish diplomat described his country as a “hub of peace, a hub of energy, a hub of power.”

“When France was busy deporting Roma, we were organising a big conference and our Prime Minister publicly apologised for having ignored their problems for so long. We now have housing and education programs being put in place for them,” he said.

He added that objections by some EU countries to Turkey’s influence-building in the Middle East and Russia are hypocritical: “We’re increasing trade relations with Iran, but France is increasing them even more. We do businesss with Russia, but so does Italy.”

He also repeated Turkey’s mantra that France, Germany, Greece and Cyprus are unfairly blocking EU accession talks.

With Turkish soldiers occupying the northern part of the divided island of Cyprus in a decades-long stand-off, Mr Bagis accused Cypriots of ill-will, citing the example of a Turkish basketball team which was bullied by Greek Cypriot supporters after a game in Cyprus. “This is not the mentality to reach a solution with,” he said.

What Brussels thinks

EU officials privately see the Bagis rhetoric as a negotiating tactic. “Whenever you negotiate with the Turks, you get the feeling that they are trying to get one over on you,” one commission contact said.

For her part, EU home affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom favours a swift visa-free deal. (Of course. None of these clueless poptarts in the EU are up to what’s needed to deal with Mohammedans. Spineless critters)

Earlier this month, she wrote in her blog: “The road to visa liberalisation is tough and filled with clear requirements and criterias, but other countries have succeeded and I see no reason why Turkey shouldn’t be able to. It would also give us an important push forward in our co-operation.”

In her official reaction to Thursday’s readmission agreement, she said its upcoming signature, expected in February, will “open up new perspective” for visa-free talks.

In an insight into EU politicking on Turkey, a freshly leaked US cable shows the level of frustration with Cyprus among pro-Turkish EU countries. It is dated 2004, but remains relevant due to Cyprus’ ongoing blockade of the Turkish accession process.

The dispatch cites senior Dutch officials as saying that Cyprus uses Turkey as a “card” in internal EU politics and urges the US to put the squeeze on Nicosia.

“What does Cyprus have these days, besides the Turkey card?” the Dutch officials – Rob Swartbol, Pieter de Gooijer and Hannie Pollmann-Zaal – told the US ambassador in The Hague. “Pollman hoped that powers outside the EU will pressure [then then Greek president] Popadopolous to support Turkish accession, using whatever psychological, political, or other means that might  work.”

Dreadful. What a dreadful state of affairs.

True to form, the slick  soldier of Allah denies he ever tried  to intimidate  or threaten Raheel Raza,  but the number on Raza’s cellphone matches that of El Gamal’s Soho Properties offices in New York. Raza says El Gamal’s tone was threatening and she took the phone call as a clear threat against her and not as some claim, a casual phrase meaning goodbye.

I have just finished reading one of the most astoundingly stupid and nasty documents ever to have landed on my desk. It consists of a letter from a law firm in Saudi Arabia, run by a man named Ahmed Zaki Yamani, to a group of newspapers in Scandinavia. I quote directly from its main paragraphs:

Over the past months my law firm has been contacted by several thousand descendants of the Prophet, who have learned about your newspaper’s republication of the drawing, depicting their esteemed ancestor as a terrorist suicide bomber with a bomb in his turban.

As descendants of the Prophet, these individuals feel personally insulted, emotionally distressed and defamed by your newspaper’s re-publication of the drawing. They have therefore retained my law firm and instructed me to approach you …

So that’s the stupid part—the idea that people who claim descent from a seventh-century warlord and preacher have standing to sue for hurt feelings. The nasty bit comes a few paragraphs later:

[I]t is my belief that your newspaper’s fulfillment of the above-mentioned conditions would be perceived as a sign of respect and understanding throughout the Muslim world in general, and your newspaper might thus help resolve the severe conflict, which your re-publication of the drawing has created. As you may be aware, this conflict is still affecting Danish and Arab interests, in particular in the Middle East, where a number of Danish products are still being boycotted.

It is impossible not to notice the element of threat and menace contained in the second extract. It’s not difficult to remind Danes of the organized campaign of hysterical retribution, ranging from the burnings of embassies to the mob-killing of civilians, that followed the firstpublication of some mild caricatures of the prophet Muhammad in 2005. Only a little further backstory is required: In 2008, it was discovered that a cell of eager murderers was planning to kill those who authored the caricatures, and in solidarity a large number of Danish newspapers reprinted the drawings in order to express their support for freedom of speech. Then, on New Year’s 2009, a Somali fundamentalist chopped his way into the house of 74-year-old cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who was having a sleepover with his granddaughter, and very nearly succeeded in axing them both to death. The apology for all this, however, is supposed to be forthcoming not from the aggressors and inciters but from their victims. Late last month, Copenhagen newspaper Politiken agreed to make a public apology on the terms dictated by the Yamani law firm.

Celebrating this abject decision at a triumphant press conference in Beirut last week, Yamani repeated his bizarre claim to be the lawyer for no fewer than 94,923 descendants of the outraged prophet. Again, he made one utterly absurd statement and one extremely sinister one:

In our view, all religious icons of all religions, such as the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, Moses, and (not to be compared to prophets and messengers) others who are non-religious icons but have contributed to humanity like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama, and others such as Ibn Sina, Ibn al-Haitham and Albert Einstein all deserve respect and protection from ridicule and defamation.

Cretinism on this historic level is comparatively rare. Apparently, Yamani thinks that Mahatma is a first name rather than a Hindu religious honorific and that the words “Dalai Lama” are a secular title. Moreover (and you have to admit that tossing in a Jewish name is a nice touch), he would protect the stern Spinozist Einstein from being lampooned for the many wrong surmises he made about the Big Bang and quantum theory. But while it is obvious that he knows nothing of such matters, he does know how to unveil a threat:

We wished that all the Danish Newspapers which published the Drawings accepted to enter into a settlement as Politiken did, and published an apology to avoid multiple jurisdictional litigations and costly damages in favor of our clients.

If you ask yourself whether Yamani cares more about the supernatural world or the grossly material one, it will not take very long to come up with an answer. You can detect it in the way that he balances the soft inducement against the hard threat of remembered mayhem: Yamani or your life.

But it is in the material world that newspapers are published and in which laws and constitutions exist that inscribe their right to print material without censorship and intimidation. It is also in the material world that laws protect grandfathers and their granddaughters from homicidal religious maniacs. Are we to surrender these hard-won rights in favor of the hectic emotions of people who claim a distant kinship with a quasi-mythological figure who was uneasy with both reading and writing and preferred to recite? This is without precedent. Are we now to be dogged with lawsuits by those in whose veins the blood of Henry VIII, Mussolini, Columbus, or Ivan the Terrible can be alleged to flourish? (At least—unless you believe Dan Brown—this will not be such a problem in the case of the Virgin Mary.)

The thing would be ridiculous if it were not so hateful and had it not already managed to break the nerve of one Danish newspaper. In Ireland a short while ago, a law against blasphemy was passed, making it a crime to outrage the feelings not just of the country’s disgraced and incriminated Roman Catholic Church but of all believers. The same pseudo-ecumenical tendency can be found in the annual attempt by Muslim states to get the United Nations to pass a resolution outlawing all attacks on religion. It’s not enough that faith claims to be the solution to all problems. It is now demanded that such a preposterous claim be made immune from any inquiry, any critique, and any ridicule.

This has to stop, and it has to stop right now. All democratic countries and assemblies should be readying legislation along the lines of the First Amendment, guaranteeing the right of open debate on matters of religion and repudiating the blackmail by law firms and individuals whose own true ancestry would not bear too much scrutiny.

(CNSNews.com) – After securing an apology from one Danish newspaper for publishing a cartoon satirizing Mohammed, a Saudi lawyer now plans to confront another 15 newspapers, filing lawsuits against them if necessary.

Faisal Yamani says he is acting on behalf of eight Muslim organizations representing “descendants of Mohammed.”

He told the Danish tabloid B.T. that he has 15 newspapers in his sights. His clients have made it clear they are ready to finance a campaign of lawsuits if the papers refuse to follow the example of the liberal daily Politiken and apologize. Yamani did not say how much he would aim to extract from the media organizations but referred to “a long and very expensive legal action.”

Cartoon-mania…

On Friday, Politiken published a formal apology to “anyone who was offended” by its decision to reproduce one of the 12 cartoons which triggered an international furor after another Danish paper, Jyllands-Posten, first published them in September 2005.

Politiken editor Toeger Seidenfaden said his paper had not published the sketch “as a statement of editorial opinion or values but merely as part of the newspaper’s news coverage.”

“It was never Politiken’s intention to offend Muslims in Denmark or elsewhere.”

In a joint statement with Yamani, the newspaper said that the Saudi lawyer’s clients had as a result of the apology now agreed “not to pursue any legal or administrative action against Politiken.”

The cartoon printed by Politiken was the one depicting a man wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with its fuse lit, drawn by cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.

Among the others, submitted by various artists, one showed “Mohammed” with eyes blacked out and carrying a large, curved knife, flanked by two burqa-clad women, while another depicted him telling a line of suicide bombers seeking entry to paradise: “Stop, stop, we have run out of virgins.” A more benign interpretation portrayed a man in white with a beard, a stick and a donkey.

The original appearance of the cartoons drew scant attention but after Danish Muslim clerics toured the Arab world to drum up reaction, protests erupted.

Muslims consider any images of the 7th century founder of their religion to be blasphemous. The association with terrorism and extremism further fueled the anger.

Protests were held in many Muslim nations, and in Nigeria, Libya and Afghanistan they turned deadly. Danish goods were boycotted in some Mideast countries, and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) used the issue to escalate its campaign at the United Nations aimed at outlawing the “defamation” of Islam.

Over time the protests ebbed, but after a plot was uncovered in 2008 to murder Westergaard, the turban cartoon was reprinted widely again in a show of solidarity. It was at this time that Politiken published it.

Its decision now to offer an apology drew strong criticism in Denmark, with Prime Minister Loekke Rasmussen saying he was troubled by the breaking of ranks.

“If this is an expression of breaking the unity that has existed among Danish newspapers and in Danish society, it is a matter of serious, serious concern,” he said. “If this is a question of bowing to a threat in order to avoid a court case, I am also concerned.”

Foreign Minister Lene Espersen said Danish newspapers should “stick together when they are met with threats.”

Westergaard was quoted as saying the decision amounted to giving in to the fear of terror, and Jyllands-Posten editor Jorn Mikkelsen, said it marked a “sad day for Danish media, for freedom of speech and for Politiken.”

Yamani, who is a partner in the Jeddah-based law firm Ahmed Zaki Yamani, approached 11 Danish newspapers several months ago on behalf of his clients. No other paper has yet publicly agreed to the proposed apology agreement.

Yamani claims to be representing eight organizations, based in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, Jordan, Australia and the Palestinian self-rule territories. He says they comprise 94,923 descendants of Mohammed.

The main client is the Cairo-based Union of Al-Ashraf (Niqabat al Ashraf), which says it has more than 80,000 registered members. Ashraf (plural of Sharifs) are Muslims claiming direct lineage to Mohammed via Fatima, the daughter from the first of his multiple marriages.

Queries sent to the organization’s president, Mahmoud el-Sharif, brought no response.

‘Deeply hurt’

In a statement reacting to the apology by Politiken, an OIC spokesman said 1.5 billion Muslims had “felt humiliated, insulted and deeply hurt by the publication of the cartoons.” The organization hoped the apology would be replicated by other newspapers involved and by the cartoonists

(The OIC spokesman does not speak for 1.5 billion muslims. He assumes and claims he does. Besides, Muslims have no right not to be  humiliated, insulted or deeply hurt for worshipping a pedophile warlord./ed)

He said the OIC was “strongly committed to freedom of expression but believes that it should be exercised responsibly so as not to create incitement and provocation leading to social unrest and disturb interfaith harmony.” (He is a liar. The OIC is determined to destroy freedom of expression…/ed)

Writing on a Web site of Britain’s Daily Telegraph, Douglas Murray, the director of the Centre for Social Cohesion – a think tank focusing on extremism in Britain – said the apology “epitomizes one of the most aggravating trends currently being accepted, which is the notion that Muslims somehow have deeper feelings than the rest of the world.”

“Most of us regularly have our deepest feelings trodden upon, not least by the expressions of bigoted Muslim attitudes,” he wrote. “But we don’t burn things, we don’t intimidate people, and we don’t force apologies out of newspapers for offence caused. Because we recognize that being offended is part of being a grown up in a free society.

“The sooner more Muslims learn that the better.”

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi called on Thursday for jihad (holy war) against Switzerland over the ban adopted last year on the construction of minarets in the country.

“It is against unbelieving and apostate Switzerland that jihad ought to be proclaimed by all means,” Kadhafi said during a speech in the Mediterranean coastal city of Bengazi to mark the birthday of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed.

“Jihad against Switzerland, against Zionism, against foreign aggression is not terrorism,” Kadhafi said.

He’s correct on one thing, jihad is not terrorism – if you’re a Muslim that is.

Jihad is the (usually unmentioned) 6th pillar of islamic belief and a religious obligation for Moslems.
It is encumbent on Muslims to wage jihad on the infidel till all submit to the Muslim god Allah.

That last sentence carries his jihad into the whole world. That is consistent with the teaching of Islam’s holy books. Anyone who opposes the advance of Islam, for any reason, is considered an aggressor, holding back the will of Allah for a universal Islamic state.  Gaddafi’s statements clearly call for offensive warfare, but Muslims will tell you that he is merely “defending” Islam.

It is interesting that he refers to “apostate Switzerland”, which in his queer and twisted psyche implies that Switzerland was once Islamic and has been “led astray” by unbelief….

Indonesia’s highest authority on Islamic affairs, the Council of Ulema (MUI), has signalled a hard line on imports from New Zealand and other Western nations.

It plans to insist that all imported food labelled as halal is sold only if it has the council’s own halal certification.

Which means: import Muslims and let them control it. Let them settle in what they perceive to be behind enemy lines,  build mosques and madrassas for them and establish Islam….

Islam has religious rules for halal food, including specific requirements for how animals should be slaughtered.

A nice little scam:

MUI’s Food, Drugs and Cosmetic Assessment Institute is the sole issuer of halal certificates for such goods.

Ma’ruf Amin, one of the chairmen of the council, said many products imported from New Zealand – and other Western countries such as the United States and Australia – carried halal labels but the MUI did not always trust their certification standards.

Mr Ma’ruf told the Jakarta Globe the move was intended “to make sure that all products labelled halal are truly halal”.

The announcement is in line with signals Indonesia gave last year that it would no longer recognise the two existing certification authorities in New Zealand, Islamic Meat Management and the Federation of Islamic Associations.

Trade Minister Tim Groser said at the time that the Indonesian plan to ban $100 million of New Zealand beef imports – and potentially $450 million worth of dairy exports – from 2010 required a long-term solution.

Since then, John Key’s Government has announced that the Food Safety Authority will provide oversight for organisations which certify halal meat to “standardise” halal certification.

The oversight may yet be extended to dairy products.

THE King of Jordan’s sister has appealed to the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, to stop the ritual slaughter of conscious animals for halal meat in Australia, saying it was not necessary under Islamic principles.

Princess Alia bint al-Hussein of Jordan, who is the sister of King Abdullah II of Jordan, said she had written to Mr Rudd saying that any lowering of animal welfare standards in Australia for religious reasons would be a blow to the country’s reputation and undermine progress in the Middle East.

“Contrary to some claims, killing without stunning is not necessary under Islamic principles,” she said.

The Australian standard on ritual slaughter for halal and kosher meat states that animals must first be rendered unconscious by electrical stunning before their throats are cut.

But under a disputed federal guideline, the Government has allowed at least four Victorian abattoirs exemptions to kill without stunning to fulfil Middle Eastern export contracts over the past two years.

“Reducing [Australia's] standards to permit animals to be slaughtered while fully conscious may meet the personal preferences of a minority but it is not an example that will inspire positive change, nor encourage the acceptance of pre-slaughter stunning in the Middle East,” she said.

The Primary Industries Ministerial Council of federal and state agriculture ministers will meet in Perth on Friday to discuss the issue, but opponents of killing without stunning are concerned exemptions will be allowed to continue or the standard will be changed.

The previous government ordered a review of ritual slaughter in 2007, but the present Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke, has not released the review report and is yet to decide on the issue.

Princess Alia said she believed Mr Rudd had a genuine interest in animal welfare and had assisted Jordan with upgrading equipment previously provided by Australia that she considered inhumane at the main abattoir in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Muslims around the world are awaiting the conclusion of Turkey’s half-century-old application to join the European Union as a sign of tolerance from the West, a Turkish official said on Friday.

“This process is very closely monitored, followed and evaluated by 1.5 billion Muslims in the world,” Egemen Bagis, minister for EU affairs, told Reuters. “Every meeting I have with my European counterparts, I can feel the pressure of these 1.5 billion people on my shoulders.”

* Is there nobody in the whole of Europe to nail this headbangers coffee-filter to his skull and send him back with seasons greetings? Why should we care about the “pressure” by billions of Muselmanic  lunatics?

Turkey, which straddles Europe and Asia, applied for membership to the EU’s forerunner in 1959 and became an EU candidate in 1999, but remains far from membership. The issue remains politically divisive among the bloc’s member states.

If the EU turns its back on Turkey, not only “Muslims all around the world, but all people, all humans, will somehow feel that they have been isolated from the West,” Bagis said.

*   “all people, all humans..”-  remember: only Muslims are human, unbelievers are the vilest of creatures…

“If a country like Turkey … is still discriminated against … then the message that those billions of people get is going to be a very negative message.

The second Turkey is accepted into the EU, the rest of the Muslim world will follow  >  the end of Europe.

Muslims around the world condemned China’s crackdown in Xinjiang with thousands taking part in anti-Chinese protests across Turkey.

At least 156 people have been killed in unrest in Xinjiang over the past week and the Islamic world has sought to bring attention to the plight of Muslim Uygurs in the Chinese region.

In Istanbul, about 5,000 people demonstrated outside the Fatih mosque after Friday prayers, according to NTV television. ”No To Ethnic Cleansing” demonstrators chanted, while burning mainland products.

About 700 people took part in a similar demonstration at the Kocatepe mosque in Ankara. Other protests were held in seven other Turkish towns.

Uygurs are Turkic speakers and Turkey, while recognizing Chinese sovereignty in Xinjiang, has been particularly outspoken on the Uygur case.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the violence in Xinjiang was ”an atrocity” while Trade and Industry Minister Nihat Ergun has called for a boycott of mainland goods.

The European Union urged Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday to craft a government that embraces the long-standing goal of an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.

The prospect of a new hawkish government, with Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman as a possible foreign minister, will be seen in Europe as a setback to the Middle East peace process.

“Let me say very clearly that the way the European Union will relate to an [Israeli] government that is not committed to a two-state solution will be very, very different,” said Javier Solana, the EU’s foreign and security affairs chief.
