A group of protesters wearing burqas gathered in various places in Sydney today to argue for Australia to ban the face veil.

They say the wearing of the Islamic headwear donned by women, should be outlawed because they pose a security risk.

Security and police were called when the burqa-clad non-Muslims incited anger outside state Parliament House.

Members of the public were extremely offended by the male protesters wearing the burqa.

Zubeda Raihman from the Muslim Women’s National Network says, “I think it is pretty offensive because we live in this democratic country and we are given the freedom of choice.”

The only “offended” comment the 7-network offers its viewers is the opinion of a muselmanic agit-prop?

The group ventured to the Downing Centre Local Court, a city pub, a bank, and the NSW Parliament House.

Ugly scenes erupted between a group of burqa-clad protesters and a Muslim man outside NSW State Parliament in Sydney today.

A group of men dressed in the veiled female garb as a publicity stunt to try and get the outfit banned. Members of the group Faceless ventured into a Sydney CBD courthouse, pub and bank without drawing much reaction, but faced a stronger backlash later outside parliament. “It’s got no place in Australia – it’s an affront to a civilised country like Australia,” Faceless member Nicholas Folkes said of the burqa.

Nine News filmed a man outraged by the protesters, shouting in their faces and pulling off their veils. “That’s what I think of you,” the man said after spitting on the ground. The argument became more heated when a man connected to Faceless referred to the prophet Mohammed as “a rat”.

Christian Democratic Party MP Fred Nile had called on both major parties to allow members a conscience vote on his private member’s bill, which was introduced into Parliament in June.

Mr Nile wants NSW to follow a growing number of European countries trying to ban women from wearing in public the burqa and the niqab, a veil with a narrow opening for the eyes.

However, at an interfaith dinner with about 300 religious leaders last night, Ms Keneally announced that cabinet had decided to oppose the Full-face Coverings Prohibition Bill, which is modelled on legislation recently passed by the Belgian Parliament.

“We are fortunate to live in a largely harmonious state where differences in language, culture and faith are rightly seen as things which enliven and strengthen our society,” Ms Keneally said.

“It is in this spirit that the NSW Government has decided to oppose the bill seeking to create a criminal offence of wearing a burqa in public places.”

Mr Nile said he was disappointed that MPs would not be allowed a conscience vote when the bill returns to Parliament next month.

“The bill is an exact copy of that passed in Belgium – it’s not extreme or radical legislation,” he said.

Mr Nile said the burqa oppressed women and could be used as a disguise by terrorists.

He claimed his bill had some support with both the government and opposition.

“I was hoping we would at least get a conscience vote, so individual members of Parliament could at least vote for and against the legislation,” he told Macquarie Radio.

“It seems like the cabinet has decided to clamp down on that freedom of expression … and gag Labor Party members.”

The cabinet decision follows a recent ruling in a Perth court that a Muslim woman must remove her full covering should she give evidence in a fraud trial.

The NSW Greens have already said they were opposed to the ban, labelling it racist.

But Islam is not a race…..

Without government support, the bill now has little chance of success.

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has authorised a blanket ban on marches in a city on the day of a planned protest by the English Defence League (EDL), an right-wing campaign group.

English council bans staff from wearing mini-skirts

A COUNCIL has warned female employees they could be sent home if their skirts are too short.

Not that this has anything to do with Islam or Muslims imposing sharia. But what if it does?

A memo sent by bosses at Southampton City Council, in southern England, has instructed the council’s 400 staff to dress appropriately for work, The Daily Mail reports.

Social workers, youth workers and other employees in the council’s children’s services department were told to “carefully consider their work attire”.

Women were advised to wear trousers or skirts of “reasonable length” – “not mini-skirts”.

The leaked email said that council bosses would in the coming weeks “be speaking to staff about the clothes they wear to work”.

It adds: “Please try to dress smartly and thoughtfully, in line with other professionals you come across in your day-to-day work, and in a way that shows respect to children and families.”

Staff are said to be outraged by the email. The council’s union secretary Mike Tucker told The Dail Mail: “I would have thought the council has got better things to do than impose a regimented approach to what people wear.”

PARIS AP — France’s lower house of parliament has approved a ban on burqa-like Islamic veils, a move that is popular among French voters despite serious concerns from Muslim groups and human rights advocates.

There were 336 votes for the bill and just one against at the National Assembly. Most members of the main opposition group, the Socialist Party, refused to participate in the vote.

Following Tuesday’s vote, the ban on face-covering veils will go in September to the Senate, where it also is likely to pass. Its biggest hurdle will likely come after that, when France’s constitutional watchdog scrutinizes it.

The main body representing French Muslims says face-covering veils are not required by Islam, and it worries that the law will stigmatize all Muslims.

“Not required” but then they are fanatical enough to riot and kill for it. And then they whine about being ‘stigmatized?’ What kind of  queer and twisted  logic is that?

But that would put France on a collision course with the EUnion, which in and of itself would be fun and more then a little interesting to watch.

In the mean time, support for the burqa ban comes from some unexpected quarters. ViaEuropeNews we learn about Mona Eltahawy, an Egyptian-born journalist who calls herself “a liberal, a Muslim and a feminist”. And a staunch supporter of the ban:

I support banning the burqa because I believe it equates piety with the disappearance of women. The closer you are to God, the less I see of you — and I find that idea extremely dangerous. It comes from an ideology that basically wants to hide women away. What really strikes me is that a lot of people say that they support a woman’s right to choose to wear a burqa because it’s her natural right. THE Reverend Fred Nile says he will continue his fight for a ban on the Islamic head and body veil after his private member’s bill foundered in Parliament yesterday.

The Christian Democrats MP wants NSW to follow a growing list of European countries which have moved to ban women from wearing the full head and body covering in public.

Rev Nile’s Full-face Coverings Prohibition Bill, which is modelled on legislation recently passed by the Belgium Parliament, would see any person wearing a a burqa or niqab while in public liable for a $550 fine.

Anyone who compels another person to wear such a covering could be fined $1100 and a person’s religious or cultural belief would not be a reasonable excuse.

“The time to act is now, the world is debating this issue right now,” Rev Nile said.

Well, we may as well start debating the benefits of Islamic immigration altogether. What say you?

However the Government, Opposition and Greens blocked his motion to debate the merits of the bill, meaning it is unlikely to go any further soon.

Muslim Labor MP Shaoquett Moselmane said considering the bill would “spread fear and division”.

Rev Nile said the issue was “the elephant in the room” and politicians were unwilling to touch a sensitive subject.

“They hope it will go away but I’ll continue to keep raising it until I get a debate on the bill.”

“I’m sure it will happen; the population in Australia in general agree with what I’m saying”

He says concealment of a person’s face – male or female – for any purpose, including terrorism, anarchism or discrimination against women, should be banned.

“We must do all we can to protect women, especially Muslim women, from discrimination and oppression so they live an open lifestyle,” Rev Nile said.

“The wearing of the burqa is a form of oppression which has no place in the 21st century.”

The Islamic dress also presented a security risk, he said, citing terrorists in the Middle East and Russia who had launched attacks while concealing their identity or weapons under a burqa.

Suab Joseph’s audience, which appeared to consist mostly of Center for Near Eastern Studies and Women’s Studies faculty, nodded their heads in agreement with this troubling statement. In fact, those gathered reacted favorably to the lecture overall and asked no challenging questions of the speaker. Overwhelming (if understated) evidence of the systematic and institutionalized abuse of Middle Eastern women didn’t seem to factor into the equation.

The Belgian gov’t is going through a coalition crisis but that will not prevent the parliament from voting today on a draft law banning face-covering veils.

Amnesty International & Human Rights Watch both urged the parliament to vote against the law.
