Like reading a passage from George Orwell’s book 1984 comes this article describing a lecture given by China’s deputy chief editor of state news agency Xinhua, Mr. Xia Lin. It reveals, not surprisingly, the Communist Country’s overt efforts to conceal the truth from the Chinese people. In perfect“Ministry of Truth” language the intent is clarified:

“Titled Understanding Journalistic Protocols for Covering Breaking News, the speech was intended to help budding journalists understand Xinhua’s dual mission: To give Chinese leaders an accurate picture of current events and to deftly manipulate that picture for the public to ensure social harmony.”

The article begins with a space flight cover-up but even more interesting to this blog is Mr Xia Lin, exposing and confirming - in a few snippets – what really happened last year when rioting angry Uighur muslims went on a rampage. Mr. Lin tells of the Uighurs raping & slaughtering innocent Han Chinese men, women and children. The facts are bone chilling.

According to the transcript, Mr Xia explained how Xinhua concealed the true horror of the unrest, during which the victims were mostly Han Chinese, for fear that it would set off violence beyond Urumqi.

Interesting that like it’s far too similar Western propaganda counterparts, authoritarian China feels compelled to mitigate grotesque muslim violence and downplay it’s motives – all under the guise of community cohesion. Thus we have the Chinese version of the British “move along now – nothing to see here” that is so prevalent in the British and Western “free speech” media particularly when the subject of muslim violence is involved.

Xinhua editor reveals how coverage was edited

BEIJING – As China held its collective breath, the nation’s first astronaut Yang Liwei floated back to the motherland, having orbited Earth 14 times in the Shenzhou 5, or Divine Capsule.

It was October 2003, and National broadcaster CCTV aired live coverage of the moment when workers opened the capsule door to reveal the smiling face of a hero – evidence that China’s maiden space voyage had gone off without a hitch.

Or had it?

A lecture given by the deputy chief editor of state news agency Xinhua reveals that the mission was not so picture-perfect.

During a speech to a group of journalism students last month, Mr Xia Lin described how a design flaw had exposed the astronaut to excessive G-force pressure during re-entry, splitting his lip and drenching his face in blood.

Workers quickly mopped up the blood, strapped Mr Yang back in his seat and shut the door. Then, with cameras rolling, the cabin door swung open again, revealing an unblemished moment of triumph.

The content of Mr Xia’s speech, later transcribed and posted online by a student who attended the May 15 lecture at Tianjin Foreign Studies University, has become a sensation in recent days.

Titled Understanding Journalistic Protocols for Covering Breaking News, the speech was intended to help budding journalists understand Xinhua’s dual mission: To give Chinese leaders an accurate picture of current events and to deftly manipulate that picture for the public to ensure social harmony.

“He’s basically telling these students that journalism in China is a big show, it’s fabricated, but in the end it’s all justified for the higher purpose of stability,” Mr Xiao said.

Postings about Mr Xia’s journalism lecture were quickly deleted, but new transcripts kept appearing.

Mr Xiao said the fact that the original posting had appeared at all suggested that some Chinese journalism students were still idealistic.

The streets of Old Kashgar were running with blood on the day I arrived, with slaughter on every street corner.

I am relieved to say that on this occasion the blood was from the throats of hundreds of sheep being ritually slaughtered – the highlight of the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Adha as celebrated in this lovely old oasis on the Silk Road, which was already ancient when Marco Polo passed this way in the 13th Century.

But in this tense, racially divided and unhappy part of China’s hard-faced and increasingly muscular empire, human blood sometimes flows on these streets as well. And it may do so again, Heaven forbid.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities on Sunday executed a man convicted of slashing 29 children and three teachers with a knife in one of a series of recent assaults on schools and kindergartens, a state news agency reported.

Xu Yuyuan was found guilty of attempted homicide in mid-May by the Taizhou Intermediate Court in the eastern province of Jiangsu, the official Xinhua News Agency said. No one died in the April 29 attack.

It was one of five major assaults against schoolchildren in the last two months that killed 17 and hurt more than 50.

The 47-year-old Xu, who was unemployed, told the court during his May 15 trial that he had lost money in gambling and business and was venting his anger against society, Xinhua said.

Xu used an 8-inch (20-centimeter) knife in the attack on the Zhongxin Kindergarten in Taixing city. Four of the victims were severely injured.

Telephones at the court rang unanswered Sunday

The string of attacks prompted Chinese authorities to tighten security at schools. Police and guards were posted at entrances and video surveillance and intruder alarms installed on some school premises. In the southwestern city of Chongqing, police were told they could shoot to kill to stop assaults on students.

The government has moved to assume control of a situation that has created worries about the safety of the country’s schools and the ability of China’s massive security apparatus to protect the vulnerable. In Taixing, hundreds of parents protested outside a hospital the day after the attack, demanding a better government response.

Xin Feng, a parent of one of the four children seriously hurt in the April attack, welcomed Xu’s conviction and execution. “That man deserved to die,” Xin said Sunday in a phone interview, without elaborating.

Xin said his 4-year-old son was no longer in intensive care, although he was still recovering in the hospital.

The attacks also have focused attention on the consequences of ignoring mental illness in modern China, as huge economic inequalities stoke social tensions.

The man convicted in the first of the five school attacks, Zheng Minsheng, killed eight children with a knife in the southern province of Fujian on March 23.

Zheng was executed one day before Xu attacked the school in Taixing – and on the same day that another man, Chen Bingkang, broke into a primary school in the southern province of Guangdong and stabbed 18 students and a teacher. Chen, a 33-year-old teacher, had been on sick leave because of mental illness.

Experts say China has failed to adequately address the mental health needs of its citizens. At least three of the recent attackers had histories of mental health problems. Two committed suicide after carrying out the attacks.

All the attackers have been men in their 30s or 40s. They all used knives or hammers – guns are tightly controlled in China and obtaining them is virtually impossible.

The flight departing for Wuhan, was forced to make an emergency landing returning to Diwobao International Airport in Urumqi, capital city of Xinjiang.

Two passengers a man and a woman were removed from the aircraft by Chinese Authorities.

Xinjiang’s  population of 21 million is divided between Turkic Uighur’s Muslims and Han Chinese, many who have arrived in recent years.

In March, 2008 two passengers a Uighur Muslim man and woman, were taken into custody by Chinese authorities after attempting to bring down a China Southern Airline jet enroute from Xinjiang to Beijing, by igniting a liquid smuggled in a canned drink.

On the 17 July, I wrote here that President Obama claims that Uighur Muslims pose no threat to security and are merely misunderstood victims of circumstance.

AP, BEIJING – Police in China’s far west have stepped up a hunt for people who took part in deadly ethnic riots there four months ago and other so-called terrorists, the regional public security ministry said Tuesday.

The “Strike Hard” campaign is to run from November through the end of the year and will cover all of the remote Xinjiang region, with police on high alert for alleged terror plots, the ministry said in a statement.

Hundreds have already been arrested and nine people sentenced to death following the July 5 riots, in which Uighurs (WEE’-gurs) attackedHan Chinese in the regional capital of Urumqi. Nearly 200 people were killed in those attacks and in revenge killings of Uighurs by Han Chinese in the days that followed.

Uighurs are a Turkic Muslim ethnic group linguistically and culturally distinct from China’s majority Han. The Uighurs see Xinjiang as their homeland and resent the millions of Han Chinese who have poured into the region in recent decades. A simmering separatist campaign has occasionally boiled over into violence in the past 20 years.

China says overseas Uighur separatists orchestrated the riots to worsen ethnic divisions and bolster their campaign for independence but the government has provided little evidence to back up its claim.

“We must step up efforts to collect and analyze information and clues regarding terror and explosives in order to strictly prevent occurrences of violent cases of this sort,” the statement said, without referring to any particular threats.

It also ordered security forces to continue the search for riot suspects.

The remote oil-rich region has been blanketed in tight security since the violence erupted, with Internet access and long distance phone service cut for even ordinary people.

Overseas Uighur rights activists and human rights groups have accused Xinjiang security officials of illegally detaining dozens of alleged rioters for months without informing families of their whereabouts, with some suspects said to be as young as 14 years old.

Enflamed by (unconfirmed) charges that a Christian had burned pages of the Qur’an, the mob burned down fifty homes, burned eight Christians alive, and wounded twenty others. Thousands of Christians fled the area.Last Thursday, enraged by the same report of blasphemy, another Muslim mob torched seventy-five Christian homes, along with two churches, in Koriyan, a village near Gojra.

Muslims are not persecuting Christians only in Pakistan. On July 18, Muslims in Alexandria, Egypt kidnapped a sixteen-year-old Christian girl, Amira Markos, while she was on her way to work. Shortly thereafter her mother received a phone call: “At 10 o’clock of the same morning someone called me and asked if I was Amira’s mother. He introduced himself as Sheikh Mohammed, and said that my daughter is fine and will convert to Islam. When I cried and begged him to let me have my daughter back, he said he would let me see her again after her conversion to Islam, and ended the call.”

Amira’s mother went to a local mosque, where matters got even worse. A Muslim sheikh told her: “Listen, mother of Amira, I am warning you not to report the abduction to the police or do anything, the price will be your son Meena [a nine-year-old boy] being slaughtered in front of your own eyes. I am not threatening, I’m talking seriously. Listen, your daughter Amira will convert to Islam next Friday, and we are now preparing her for that. Now go home and stay indoors until everything is quietly over.”

The World Uighur Congress says the province should be given the right of self-determination. “The people should decide,” says Asgar Can. At the moment the conditions are not in place for that to happen. If his people do call for independence one day, he says, then they would establish a democratic system. Can says it could be modelled after the East Turkistan Republic that existed in the region between 1944 and 1949, when it became part of the People’s Republic of China. He adds: “We have never had the intention of founding an Islamic country.” (But treaties with infidels are worthless in the eyes of Allah: “Allah has absolved you of your vows…” and lying to infidels is a virtue for a Muselman…/ed)
