A court has awarded an Islamic woman $16,000 in compensation, as well a written apology, after the woman and her friends were not allowed to go on water rides at Perth’s Adventure World because of their religious clothing.

Pakeeza Shaikh was awarded the money this month after she complained to the Equal Opportunity Commission that the group had been victims of discrimination and embarrassment at the park last February, The West Australian reported.

She complained that they had been humiliated about covering up their bodies, in three-quarter length pants and long shirts, for religious reasons.

It is understood that the money has been divided between the five Islamic families who visited the park as a group.

They apparently rejected earlier offers of financial compensation until the deal included a written apology.

The Islamic Council of Western Australia said it was the park’s fault for not providing any signs or rules regarding appropriate dress.

“There were no signs to say what type of dress you can wear,” spokesman Rahim Ghauri told ninemsn.

“We have to abide by the law of the land in Australia, but if there’s no signs how can you blame the person?”

Last year, Ms Shaikh told The West Australian that her group of friends was told if they entered the water in their clothes then chlorine levels would have to be increased to counter the unsanitary effect of their clothes.

They were also told that their clothing was too dangerous to wear on the waterslides, as it could get caught in the joints.

However, there were no signs or documentation to prove that the swimwear was inappropriate or banned.

The Equal Opportunity Commission said it could not comment on the case, but confirmed to The West Australian that a recreation park had apologised to an Islamic group and paid $16,000 in compensation.

The commission said that the park was planning on reviewing its clothing rules and that it had offered free entry passes to the group.

A lawyer representing both Wackenhut and the

OPEC head backs Saudi compensation claims over lost oil revenues

Saudi Arabia is gaining support from the Organization for the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for its appeals to secure compensation for oil producing countries, as developed countries move away from oil towards greener energy sources.

Abdalla Salem el-Badri Secretary-General of OPEC said in an interview with The Times that he would support Saudi’s claims for compensation if talks at next month’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, end with commitments to reduce oil consumption in developed countries.

Dr. Mohammed Aly Raouf, Program Manager of Environmental Research at the Gulf Research Center in Dubai, told The Media Line such a claim would set a problematic precedent.

“Sooner or later the world will switch to another source of energy and if they say they want to be compensated then the coal producing countries can also say they want to be compensated,” Dr. Raouf said. “We are not looking at the interests of individual countries, we are looking at the interest of the whole world to save the planet.”

At least 193 countries are expected to take part in the conference as signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a treaty signed a decade ago, which some viewed as a critical turning point in global climate talks.

According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, tackling climate change is key to ensuring sustainable development, poverty eradication and safeguarding economic growth.  (Code speak for transferring the wealth of civilized nations to third world s*#tholes, to make us more like them/ed)

Pressure to secure compensation for loss of oil revenue is mounting due to OPEC’s increased dependence on oil revenue, and a growing international support for green energy.

Saudi Arabia first proposed a program for compensation in 1992, during the United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro.

Oil in the region is currently being traded at $80 a barrel. Last year prices fell to $47 and numerous development projects across the region were either put on hold or cancelled.

Over the last 20 years Gulf States have attempted to diversify their economies away from a dependence on oil income. Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has been most successful with expansion into the financial services industry and real estate.

When the global economic crisis hit the region last year, the countries least affected were those most able to fall back on oil revenue. Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates’ capital, bailed Dubai’s state-owned companies at a cost of $10 billion, raising concerns that despite attempts at diversification, oil underscores the region’s economy stability.

Abu Dhabi is the world’s fourth largest oil producer and is estimated to control 10% of the world’s known oil reserves.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s top oil producer with an estimated daily production of ten million barrels a day.

A Cook County correctional officer who claimed he was harassed by colleagues because of his Arab ancestry was awarded $200,000 in damages by a federal jury Friday.

Officer Abraham Yasin sued the Cook County sheriff’s office in 2007, saying he was constantly targeted by fellow officers with slurs such as “camel jockey,” “bin Laden,” and “shoe bomber” — over the the radio and via graffiti scrawled on his locker.

Once, according to the court documents, a correctional officer called Yasin on the radio, and when Yasin did not respond, somebody said that “he’s making a bomb.”

The sheriff’s office did not respond to his repeated complaints, according to the suit, which was filed on Yasin’s behalf by the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“This was an unprecedented decision,” CAIR staff attorney Kevin Vodak said. “The case stands as a legal precedent and a symbol of hope for Arab Americans to expect to be free of harassment in their workplace.”

The sheriff’s office said it resolved four of seven issues Yasin brought to his bosses. “Each was addressed quickly, and he thanked us each time,” the office said in a statement.

Three other incidents, including the graffiti on the locker, were investigated without discovering who was responsible, the statement said.

But the sheriff’s office said a reminder of the department’s zero-tolerance policy toward racism was read aloud at five consecutive roll calls.

“There was not a single incident that occurred after this was read,” the office said. “We are now exploring our options for an appeal.”

Another of Yasin’s attorneys, Jim Fennerty, said CAIR plans to ask the court for legal fees on top of the jury damages.

As an active officer, Yasin is not allowed to speak to the media without permission, but in a statement released after the verdict, he said he feels a “sense of relief and vindication.”

“I served my country in uniform with dignity and honor and felt betrayed that my service would be met by some of my fellows with racial slurs, harassment and ridicule,” Yasin said. “This is not what our country is about.”

Mr Bari has publicly condemned the killing of British troops The BBC has agreed to pay £45,000 in damages to the head of the Muslim Council of Britain over a libellous claim in the Question Time programme. The claim was made by a panellist on the programme, who accused Muhammad Abdul Bari of implicitly condoning the kidnap and killing of British soldiers. Mr Bari argued this was untrue, citing his public condemnation of the killing of British troops in Iraq in 2007. The BBC accepted the argument and apologised unreservedly. The libellous claim – made on the 12 March 2009 edition of Question Time – came in response to a question from an audience member concerning controversial protests in March by a group of Muslim men against a regiment of British troops on parade in Luton on their return from duty in Iraq. The audience member asked: “Should these protests we saw last week when the Royal Anglia Regiment came to Luton be banned?” In response to the question, one of the Question Time panellists suggested that despite having been asked many times to condemn the kidnapping and killing of British soldiers, Mr Bari had failed to do so and thereby implicitly condoned such acts. The panellist also suggested that Mr Bari believed the kidnapping and killing of British soldiers was a good and Islamic thing.
