News of an Islamist massacre of two Christian Coptic families has emerged from Upper Egypt with the return of Internet connections to the country, after a one-week Internet blackout imposed by the troubled regime. The massacre, not the first in Egypt in recent weeks,  took place on Sunday afternoon (January 30) at the village of Sharona near Maghagha, in Minya province, and is being reported by AINA, the Assyrian International News Agency.

The Islamist murderers, aided by Muslim neighbors of the Copts, stormed the homes of the families, gaining access to the houses’ roofs from the roofs of the families’ Muslim neighbors. They killed eleven, including children, and seriously injured four more people.

Anba Agathon, Bishop of Maghagha, told Coptic activist Dr. Mona Roman in a televised interview on Al-Karma TV that the killers are neighbors of the Copts, who “seized the opportunity of the mayhem prevailing in Egypt and the absence of police protection to slaughter the Copts.”

The bishop said that he had visited the injured Copts at Maghagha General Hospital and that they informed him that they recognized the main attackers, who come from the same village, Sharona.

“The two families were staying in their homes with their doors locked when suddenly the Islamists descended on them,” said Bishop Agathon, “killing eleven and leaving for dead four other family members. In addition, they looted everything that was in the two Coptic houses, including money, furniture and electrical equipment. They also looted livestock and grain.”

One group of masked assailants infiltrated the home of Copt Joseph Waheeb Massoud and killed him, his wife Samah, their 15-year old daughter Christine and 8-year-old son Fady Youssef. Another group simultaneously accessed the house of Copt Saleeb Ayad Mayez and shot him dead, along with his wife Zakia, their 4-year-old son Joseph and 3-year-old daughter Justina, Saleeb’s 23-year-old sister Amgad, his mother Zakia and a woman named Saniora Fahim.

“The massacre has nothing to do with the mayhem in Egypt,” the bishop said, “but the murderers took advantage of the lack of police protection and thought they could commit their crime and no one would notice.”

“Why have those Islamists chosen those two Coptic families and not Muslim ones to slaughter and rob? I believe it is because they know that with Copts they can literally get away with murder,” accused Coptic activist Dr. Hanna Hanna.

Cairo, 5 Jan. (AKI) – Numerous threats to Egypt’s Copts have been posted on fundamentalist Muslim websites ahead of the Coptic Christian Church’s Christmas and in the wake of the New Year’s Eve attack in Alexandria, which killed 23 people.

A recent message posted on the al-Shumukh website and others considered close to Al-Qaeda addressed themselves directly to Coptic pope Shenuda III who was warned of “imminent new strikes” against Egyptian Copts.

One message on a forum promised that “we will strike you all in a new attack. We have warned you as Allah is my witness.”

A missive posted on website Mujahideen simply warned: “There will be new attacks very soon.”

The Coptic church of Saint Mary and Saint Mark in the Paris suburb of Chatenay-Malabry had reportedly been threatened. Copts in Germany have also asked for protection after receiving similar threats.

The Austrian interior ministry on Monday announced that that country’s Copt community was put under protection after the discovery of a list of 150 Copts targeted for attack. England has also implemented security measures.

Barnaba El Soryani, who is a religious leader for the Copt population in the northern city of Turin, in an interview with Adnkronos International said he has “asked for protection by the Italian police during a prayers” that will take place on 6 January, the day that marks Christmas Eve on the Coptic calendar.

Abdul Nasser Madani was arrested at his home in the state of Kerala.

He accuses the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Karnataka, whose capital is Bangalore, of “framing” him.

This is taking place amidst Egypt attacking ‘campaign of aggression’ against migrants in Italy and asking the Italian government to “take the necessary measures” to protect Arab and Muslim minorities.

Egypt (AINA) — Egyptian State Security has intensified its intimidation of the Coptic Church and Christians in Nag Hammadi, and neighboring Bahgoura, by carrying out random arrests of Christian youth. The campaign against Christians started on Friday January 7, 2010 and is continuing; multiple members of families have been arrested without warrants. Most arrests are being carried at dawn. More than one hundred Christian youth have been arrested without charge.

Arrests of Copts after every sedition is the usual scenario as a pressure card in the hands of State Security to force the church and Copts to accept “reconciliation”, in which Coptic victims give up all criminal and civil charges against the perpetrators. Because of the reaction in Egypt and worldwide to the shootings and the role of the State Security, Bishop Kyrollos was asked issue statements downplaying the negligence of State Security. Cairo (AINA) — Christian in Egypt are up in arms this week over a controversial book issued as a free supplement with this month’s Al-Azhar magazine, describing Christianity as a Religion of “idolatry” and claiming that the Holy Bible is a misquotation of the original one. The book was published by State-owned corporations that are financed by taxpayers, Christians as well as Muslims.

The controversial book is titled “Scientific Report” and authored by Dr. Muhammad Imarah, a member of Al-Azhar’s Islamic Research Academy (IRA), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Religious Endowments. The book discusses Christian dogma, casts doubts over it, and asserts that Christianity is a “religion of polytheism.”

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday stated that forced conversions, termed as Love Jihad or Romeo Jihad, and efforts for that were a reality in the State despite the arguments by the Kerala Director General of Police, and Union Home Department to the contrary.

Stating that the State Government had the responsibility to check forced conversions, the court asked it to formulate legislation on the lines of the other States.

Rejecting a petition for anticipatory bail in a Love Jihad case filed by Shehenshah, a Muslim youth, who had allegedly forced a non-Muslim MBA girl student of a Pathanamthitta college in the name of love, the court said that campuses should not be turned into venues for forced conversions through false love affairs.

Justice KT Sankaran also rejected another petition seeking a ban on the use of the terms Love Jihad and Romeo Jihad.

Earlier, Kerala DGP Jacob Punnoose had submitted in the court that no evidence was available to prove the existence of an organised movement in the State, specialising in converting non-Muslim girls into Islam through treacherous love affairs. Subsequently, the Union Home Department told the court that it had no information of any movement anywhere in the country specialising in such conversion methods.

Justice Sankaran also pointed out that the reports submitted by top police officials in the State were of contradictory in nature. The DGP had told the court that there were no “actionable” evidences to suggest that such a conversion campaign was on in Kerala but indications of possibility of such a programme was there. The court also said that 14 out of the 18 reports from SPs on the matter, submitted by the DGP, were of no value or use.

However, police reports themselves had made it clear that forced conversions through love affairs as a movement had been going on in Kerala since 1996. The judge said that the police reports had indicated that about 4,000 conversions had taken place through love affairs in the past four years, and 2,800 girls of other religions had undergone conversion into Islam in this period.

He also said that 1,600 such conversions had taken place in four northern districts, including Malappuram, Kerala’s Muslim-majority district. It was evident from the report submitted by the DGP that outfits like Islamist Popular Front of India (earlier NDF) and its student wing, the Campus Front, were behind the organised campus-based conversion programme, said Justice Sankaran.

He added that the DGP’s report had also indicated that Muslim conversion centres had been functioning in Kozhikode district.

Though the Constitution guaranteed equal rights to all religions, the right for faith should not be used for forced conversions and conversions through treachery, the judge said. Mixed marriages could be promoted but such marriages should not be used as tools for forced or treacherous conversions, he pointed out.

He also said that several other States had formulated legislations for preventing forced conversions and the people and the Government of Kerala should consider formulation of such legislation in view of the particular context.

(AINA) — In the last week of July a Coptic rights movement dubbed “Copts for Egypt,” using the social network Facebook as platform, called upon all Copts in Egypt to stage a general strike on September 11, which coincides with the Coptic New Year.

In its communiqué, which first appeared on the Facebook site, the group stated the action is meant to express the resentment of all Copts over the Egypt’s position on the repeated attacks on the homes and property of Copts because some of them have been used for religious observance.

The group members, wanting to remain anonymous, describe themselves as “Egyptians, pained by the divisions among the Egyptian rows, and being the ‘the voice of the voiceless” (the oppressed). Members of the group are Muslims and Christians.”

The “Copts for Egypt” movement has asked Copts participating in the strike to stay at home all day on September 11, and if they leave their homes for any reason wear black.

The strike centers around the Copts’ demands for the Egyptian government to ratify the unified law for building houses of worship, and to abolish the unofficial “reconciliation sessions,” which takes place despite the presence of criminal suspicion, and to bring the perpetrators in sectarian strife to justice.

Many political analysts and human rights organizations argue that the tension between the Muslim and Coptic Egyptian communities is caused primarily by the issue of Christian places of worship….

Wilders: Israel is “the first line of defense for the West”

Israel will be a major part of Geert Wilders’ next film on Islam, the rightist Dutch legislator said last week in an interview for Haaretz. He praised Avigdor Lieberman, observing “similarities” between Yisrael Beiteinu and the Party for Freedom – a small movement which has grown to become Holland’s second most popular.

Wilders, a controversial anti-immigration politician, rose to international fame last year when he released a 14-minute film entitled Fitna, which attempts to portray what he considers as Islam’s “violent nature.” The film, which has been viewed by millions online, provoked mass protests throughout the Muslim world.

In April Wilders announced he was working on a sequel. Just as Fitna focused on genocidal anti-Semitism in the Muslim world, Wilders said that the sequel – which focuses on “Islamization in the West” – will show “how the forces of Islamization are specifically targeting Israel in a fight against all free societies.”

He added: “The film will demonstrate that the fight against Israel is not territorial, and hence Israel is only the first line of defense for the West. Now it’s Israel but we are next. That’s why beyond solidarity, it is in Europe’s interest to stand by Israel.”

Wilders is facing criminal charges for allegedly inciting hate by comparing the Koran to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf in the original Fitna film. His party’s dark horse achievement in the European Parliament elections earlier this month, he said, is connected to the judicial system’s decision to prosecute him.

The Party for Freedom – which has only nine seats in Dutch parliament – won five seats in the June 4 European elections, making it the second largest of all Dutch parties in Brussels. A recent poll shows that if elections were held now, the Party would become the country’s largest or second largest….

Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu is, according to Wilders, safer because it doesn’t automatically accept the two-state solution. But he added: “I am more concerned now about Israel’s situation because of the positions of U.S. President Barack Obama.”

The president’s speech in Cairo “shocked” Wilders, he says. “Until now Israel could rely on the U.S. for support even when the Europeans failed to offer it. Now Israel will have a tougher time,” he added.

“The two-state solution is an internal Israeli matter and I hesitate to interfere. But my personal belief is that there is a two state solution for the Palestinians. One of those states is called Jordan,” he added.

Wilders also said that Obama’s preference for dialogue with Iran despite its ongoing drive to obtain nuclear weapons – according to Western intelligence reports – is “intolerable.”

The Party for Freedom will not join any bloc at the European Parliament, Wilders said. “We will not join an [sic] rightist party with anti-Semitic or xenophobic inclinations,” he explained. “The attempts to classify us as such are the result of our rivals’ panic.”

While defending gay rights and supporting animal welfare bills, the Party holds a hardliner assimilations stance on the integration of existing immigrants into Dutch society, and is consistently Eurosceptic….”We have no power but a lot of influence, and are now a serious force which cannot be ignored,” Wilders said. “I think the stale political establishment of the Netherlands doesn’t quite know how to close the window that let in our party, like a cool draft of wind.”
