Will Louise Adler and Q&A be as loudly condemnatory of these real abuses by the Palestinian Authoriy forces as they were last week of unsubstantiated abuses by Israel:

Since the end of December 2008, during and after the Israeli military offensive which killed some 1,300 Palestinians, most of them civilians, Hamas forces and militias in the Gaza Strip have engaged in a campaign of abductions, deliberate and unlawful killings, torture and death threats against those they accuse of “collaborating” with Israel, as well as opponents and critics.

Note Amnesty International’s anti-Israeli spin, incidentally, even when criticising Hamas. Its claim that Israeli forces killed 1300 Palestinians, “most of them civilians”, is credibly denied by both Israel and journalists.

Should you be inclined to prefer the Hamas (and Amnesty) account of the death toll, and the claims that 960 of the alleged 1434 dead were civilians, consider this: What are the odds that most of the dead were civilians when even Hamas concedes that men outnumber the women among the dead 1025 to 121?

By Nazih Siddiq/tiscali

NAHR AL-BARED, Lebanon (Reuters) – Lebanese tanks and artillery battered a Palestinian refugee camp where Islamist militants are holed up for a third day on Tuesday, amid growing concern for the plight of 40,000 civilians trapped there.

                                      Archive photo

The fighting erupted at dawn at Nahr al-Bared camp near the northern port of Tripoli, Lebanon’s second largest city. The army is attacking Fatah al-Islam, a small al Qaeda-inspired Sunni group that made its base in the camp last year.

It has little Lebanese or Palestinian support, but the bombardment of the crowded camp has begun to provoke anger among refugees elsewhere in Lebanon.

Residents of Nahr al-Bared appealed for fighting to stop, saying there were dead and wounded lying on the streets.

“We have seen many wars but never seen bombardment in this way. Entire areas have been destroyed,” Jamal Laila, 40, told Reuters by telephone. “Children have no milk, water or bread.

“For the sake of 10, 20 or 30 individuals an entire camp is being massacred,” he said, weeping over the phone.

Speaking from the same number, Aisha Laila, 40, said her five-month-old child had no milk and her three other children were crouched in a corner while bombs hit nearby houses.

“Perhaps those Fatah al-Islam are here. But we don’t know them and don’t know where they are. Why are we being bombarded?”

A U.N. aid convoy waited on the outskirts of the camp, but could not enter while the violence continued.

At least 22 militants, 32 soldiers and 27 civilians have been killed since the army and Fatah al-Islam began fighting on Sunday, making it Lebanon’s worst internal violence since the 1975-1990 civil war. Fifty-five soldiers have also been wounded.

In Beirut, a bomb exploded in a shopping area in a mainly Sunni Muslim area on Monday night, wounding at least seven people. It appeared to mirror a blast on Sunday that killed a woman and wounded 10 people in a mainly Christian district.

A faxed statement in the name of Fatah al-Islam claimed responsibility for the blasts and threatened more. But Abu Salim, a spokesman for the group, denied it was involved.

PALESTINIAN PROTESTS

Crowds gathered at the Palestinian refugee camp of Beddawi, 9 km (five miles) from Nahr al-Bared, demanding a ceasefire and shouting slogans against the Lebanese army and government.

Hazma Qassem, a mosque imam in Beddawi, said people had at first opposed the militants who had attacked Lebanese troops.

“But we are now against the army after the scorched-earth policies it has been using and the massacres against women and children,” he said. “The battle will be open on all the Lebanese lands if there is not an immediate ceasefire.”

In Ain al-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon, Islamist militants blocked roads with tyres and several shops closed. “If the fighting (in the north) doesn’t stop, the war will be with all Islam not just Fatah al-Islam,” one militant said.

The renewed shelling began hours after Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s government stressed the need to root out Fatah al-Islam, which it sees as a tool of Syria.

“We are going to continue fighting until the last shot. There will not be another Jenin massacre,” Abu Salim, the group’s spokesman said, referring to an Israeli assault on a refugee camp in the West Bank in 2002. (He must be talking about the “Jenin massacre” that never was/ed)

Palestinian leaders met Siniora to discuss the crisis.

“We have agreed on measures to tackle and contain the situation,” PLO representative Abbas Zaki said afterwards.

“Work is continuing to find common measures to prevent the country and camps from unacceptable escalations,” he said.

The United States, which backs the Beirut government, said Lebanon was justified in attacking the militants.

“Extremists that are trying to topple that young democracy need to be reined in,” U.S. President George W. Bush said.

He stopped short of holding Damascus directly responsible, while saying that Syria was still involved in Lebanon.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moualem again said his country opposed Fatah al-Islam and wanted to arrest its leaders. “Our forces have been after them, even through Interpol,” he said.

The violence has challenged Lebanon’s army, which normally stays out of domestic conflicts and has shaken the government, seen as illegitimate by pro-Syrian and other opposition groups.

(Additional reporting by Ali Ghamloush)

Rescuers pull out an injured man as an explosion went off inside the Traveller’s Inn in Iligan city, southern Philippines on Aug. 17, 2008. Two bombs exploded simultaneously in two hotels in Iligan city, wounding at least four people in the latest in a series of attacks in the south that has alarmed authorities.

Four Hurt In Philippines Hotel Bomb Blasts

(AP) Two homemade bombs exploded almost simultaneously Sunday in two budget hotels in a southern Philippine city, wounding at least four people in the latest in a series of bomb attacks in the volatile south, officials said.

The first bomb exploded in a guest room in the Iligan Travelers Inn near a shopping mall in southern Iligan city, wounding at least three people. A second bomb went off within minutes in a room in the Caprice Lodging House, injuring one, according to army and police officials.

Bomb experts checked all hotels and lodging houses in Iligan to make sure they were safe, army Brig. Gen. Hilario Atendido said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts, the latest to hit the country’s south in recent days amid renewed hostilities between government troops and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, an 11,000-strong rebel group that has waged a decades-long battle for Muslim self-rule in the southern Mindanao region.

Officials in Iligan, a predominantly Christian city of 300,000 people, have strongly opposed a preliminary accord between the government and the rebels that calls for the expansion of an existing Muslim autonomous region to include more than 700 new villages, including eight in Iligan, subject to the approval of residents in a plebiscite.

Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz told a local radio station that his city would not drop its opposition to the accord, which is being challenged by opponents before the Supreme Court.

Philippine officials suspect the rebels were responsible for three bomb explosions that damaged two power transmission pylons late Wednesday and wounded a suspected rebel Thursday in southern North Cotabato province. Three other unexploded bombs were found in the province late last week, police said.

Nearly 3,000 troops and police dislodged about 1,000 rebels from 15 predominantly Christian farming villages the guerrillas had seized in North Cotabato, displacing about 80,000 people. The massive three-day assault ended Wednesday.

Despite the rebel pullout, military chief Gen. Alexander Yano said last week that security in southern Mindanao island remained “volatile and fluid,” adding that the rebels could be planning more attacks in the sprawling region.

Police officials have been concerned that the rebels could launch bombings in other cities, including the capital, Manila.
