Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on Sunday said the attack was “unacceptable” but urged Swedes not to jump to “premature conclusions” that “create tension which paints pictures that are then difficult to change.”…

If confirmed as a suicide bombing, the attack would be the first of its kind in Sweden. However, Swedish citizens have been linked to suicide bomb plots abroad.

On Thursday, a court in Gothenburg found two Swedish citizens of Somali origin guilty of planning suicide attacks in Somalia.

The imam of Stockholm’s main mosque, Sheik Hassan Mussa, said in a statement he deplored “all forms of attacks, violence fears and threats against innocent people, whatever the motive or pretext.”

How often do we have to see these absurd, paper thin “condemnations” from spokespeople for mainstream Islam? “Innocent” is a qualifier that renders the so called condemnation absolutely meaningless. Besides, there is no definition for ‘innocent’ in the Koran; only a Muslim can be innocent. Furthermore, the “all forms of attacks” is an unnecessary elaboration, deisgned presumably to require that we accept as equivalent defensive counter-attacks by people protecting themselves from homicidal Islamic terrorism. Finally to “deplore” is not necessarily to condemn. I would deplore the slaughter of young German men on the beaches at D Day. But I wouldn’t condemn it.

IT HAS become a lightning rod in the public debate about the right of Muslim women to wear the burqa, attracting protests, the censure of a mayor and messages of support from talkback radio.

But now the Newtown mural of a woman in a full-face Muslim covering with a strike symbol over her face and the words ”Say No to the Burqa” is the subject of an anti-discrimination complaint.

Cigdem Aydemir, 27, a Muslim, artist and high-school art teacher, said she felt ”completely offended and insulted” when she saw the mural pop up in her neighbourhood. 

The work of a local artist, Sergio Redegalli, the piece adorns a wall of his studio facing the street and the busy rail line.

”My sister-in-law wears a burqa … my mother wears a veil,” she said. ”I wore a veil for 10 years of my life. I think everyone has the right to wear whatever they want on their body and that kind of diversity needs to be protected.”

Aydemir went to the police and then the council to try to make the complaint, but as the mural was painted on private property neither could intervene. She lodged her concerns with the Anti-Discrimination Board, who this week notified Redegalli.

He said he had painted it to open debate about the burqa, but now felt his right to freedom of expression was on the line.

”There’s a problem about the right to free expression, the loss of the ability to say something without instantly being branded a racist,” Redegalli said. He cited a number of reasons for his opposition to the garment, including concerns about security and the rise of Islamic extremism in Australia.

”There’s thousands that can say we don’t actually feel comfortable about this – that’s not being taken seriously,” he said.

But Aydemir said: ”It’s Islamophobic; it’s feeding the racist and sexist attitudes we have in our society.”

The image has drawn fire from locals, and has been defaced at least 20 times. The former Marrickville mayor, Sam Iskander, said in September the mural ”goes against the values which the Marrickville community has believed in and practised for generations”.

Not. The burqa is not an “Australian value”. It must be banned, once and for all….

The Wall Street Journal wonders how much the Turkish Government was behind an Islamist plot to make a pariah of Israel:

So the Prime Minister of Turkey calls Israel “a festering boil in the Middle East that spreads hate and enmity,” while his foreign minister compares Monday’s Israeli naval raid on a flotilla of ships headed for the Gaza Strip, in which nine passengers were killed, to the attacks of September 11, 2001…

Yet the more facts that come to light about the flotilla, its passengers and their sponsors, the more it seems clear that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Ergodan’s government, far more so than Israel’s, must be held to account for Monday’s violent episode… The Turkish accounting should begin with a full explanation from the government of its relationship with the IHH, an Istanbul-based Islamic “charity” that purchased three of the six boats used in the flotilla from the city government, sent hundreds of its activists along with it, and reportedly has ties to Turkey’s ruling Islamist AKP Party.

That attitude conforms with the general pattern of Mr. Erdogan’s foreign policy. For all his denunciations of Israel’s alleged brutality in Monday’s raid, he was among the first foreign leaders to congratulate Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his “victory” in last year’s presidential election.

The IHH—the Turkish acronym for the “Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief”—has widely reported links to Hamas, the terrorist group that runs Gaza and most directly threatens Israel. Moreover, in the 2001 Seattle trial of Ahmed Ressam, the would-be Millennium bomber, French counterterrorism magistrate Jean-Louis Bruguiere testified that the IHH had played an “important role” in Ressam’s plot to bomb LAX airport on New Year’s Day, 2000, and that there was “a rather close relation” between the bomber and the Turkish group…

Yet knowing all this, the Turkish government made no effort to prevent the flotilla from setting sail. The government also seems unembarrassed that the IHH belongs to a Saudi-based umbrella group of Islamic charities known as “The Union of the Good,” which the U.S. Treasury designated a terrorist organization in November 2008. On the contrary, Mr. Erdogan has been outspoken in his calls for the world to recognize Hamas, even as his relations with the more moderate Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas have been notably cool.
