The Islamists’ Enablers: The Western Sellout to Sharia Law (HNY)

There is no doubt that free speech, the bedrock of democracy and civilization, is under dangerous assault in many Western countries, by a variety of leading organizations and individuals who align themselves with Muslim institutions.

They all promote the fantasy of Muslim victimhood, and force the West to overprotect Muslims, to ignore their atrocities, and to surrender to their escalating demands.

Around the world, Muslims enforce non Muslims compliance and deliberate air-brushing of the extent and magnitude of the Islamic threat — from holy war, or Jihad, to the treatment of women under Islam. As approved by Sharia dictates, Muslims also try to forbid non-Muslims from speaking critically about Islam.

How do they accomplish this? They name anyone who engages in an honest examination of Islamic texts as a bigot, or full of hate, or call him an “Islamophobe.” Dissent brings trials for non-specific “hate-speech” crimes, as well as threats of riots, violence and boycotts. In many worst-case scenarios, Muslims kill non Muslims, as well as those brave Muslims who dare to defy mind-control and suppression.

Only a few days ago the courageous Lars Hedegaard was found guilty of so called “hate speech” for having made allegedly racist statements. Yet, Mr. Hedegaard has been telling the truth. He has been bringing to the public’s attention the appalling widespread Islamic ‘honor’ violence, in which family members are directed kill female relatives, reportedly to “restore family honor,” for “crimes” such as as being raped — often by a family member; the woman is always declared guilty, never the rapist — as well as for alleged adultery, even if there is no proof, but just “a feeling” the judges may have as in the recent case of Hena in Bangladesh. who was sentenced to 300 lashes, and during the lashings died.

During my thirty-two years of living in Syria, I have witnessed first hand countless acts of vicious violence and cruelty. As a practicing physician in Syria, I have seen and treated countless abused women who were severely beaten and raped with the tacit approval of Sharia and family “honor.”

Those victims I treated were of the same type of victims honor violence to which Mr. Hedegaard referred, and for which he is now being penalized by those who are supposed to be championing the same values we all hold dear in the West.

By suppressing the freedom to expose atrocities and cruelty against Muslim women, however, the West undermines their status as respected and valued citizens. Is this what government leaders seek to accomplish? Are Muslim women who suffer immensely under Sharia Law, including in the West, not worthy of government protection?

As a physician, I am alarmed at the coordinated effort by Islamists and their accomplices in the West to disrupt this basic right to freely express and expose what needs to be corrected.

The horrific attack on 9/11 has brought to light the recognition that no spot on Earth is immune to Islamism. My own personal stories — my opthamology teacher in medical school in Syria, for example, was shot and killed in front of us because he was teaching female students — apply to all of us.

As long as there are Muslims within our societies who promote Islamic Sharia Law and work tirelessly to apply it in our free societies, we need to be educated, vigilant and active in defending our liberties. It is one issue that all of us must be concerned about and strongly attentive to.

I am not here to incite anyone against Muslims. Please understand that Muslims are my people, and under any circumstances I wouldn’t be able to peel off my own skin and be anything else but a woman from a Muslim country and the Islamic culture. But I am here to unearth the true face of Islam as a hateful and intolerant ideology, including its treatment of women.

Osama Bin Laden is now dead and gone. But the harsh and intolerable Sharia Law he so faithfully practiced is alive and thriving. Bin Laden’s life and horrific actions are clear proof that Islamists are victims of an intolerable dogma that lures them away from their inherent common sense, and turns them into human beasts.

At a very early age, they are brainwashed to believe that Islam is bound to control the entire world, and that their mission on earth is to fight for the sake of this goal. For this, the end justifies the means — therefore humiliating, torturing or killing others is a divine mission.

Lara Logan, the CBS journalist who covered the recent Egyptian revolution broke the wall of silence on a program called “60 minutes,” by sharing the sexual violence that was inflicted on her as a female and a foreign journalist in the field. In her own words, she stated that the Egyptian mob who assaulted her “really enjoyed my pain and suffering. It incited them to more violence.”

For many Westerners this is a vivid view into the shocking treatment and continuous harassment of native women, as well as foreign women, in Egypt.

This practice persists due to Muslim inculcation of hostility to, and derision of, women. To add salt to wound, Muslims blame only the victim — for supposedly falling short of Islamic restrictions on dress and behavior and thereby “enticing” the men.

Unfortunately, in her interview, Logan submitted to the persisting political correctness, and was careful not to use the words “Muslim” or “Islam” with connection to the terrible sexual ordeal against her.

Let me share with you only few personal stories. These are tales which only affirm Lara Logan’s deplorable episode, and prove the pervasiveness of the abuse of women in the Muslim world.

My own niece was forced to marry her cousin when she was eleven and he was over forty. Her marriage was valid under Islamic Sharia because the prophet Muhammad married his second wife, Aisha when she was 6 years old and he was over fifty. My niece for many years was terribly abused and did not have the right to ask for a divorce.

She would escape from her husband’s house to her father’s, begging him; “Please let me stay here. I promise to be your maid to the last day of my life. He is so abusive; I can’t take this torture any more.” Her father would reply, “It’s shame for a woman to leave her husband’s home without his permission. Go back. I promise I will talk to him”

At the age of 28, my niece committed suicide by setting herself on fire; she left behind four children.

While working as a physician in Syria, I witnessed many crimes committed in my society in the name of Islam. Once, when I worked in a small village, a woman in her late thirties came to my office complaining of nausea, vomiting and back pain. An examination revealed that she was three months pregnant. As soon as I told her the news, she collapsed on the chair and began to scream, smacking her face, “I beg you doctor, I beg you to rescue me from the mess I’m in. My son will kill me. I don’t care about my life. I deserve to die, but I don’t want my son to dirty his hands with my blood.”

“What is wrong, Fatima?” I asked.

“My husband died five years ago and left me with four children. His brother rapes me every day in exchange for feeding my children. If he knew I was pregnant he would provoke my son, who is 15, into killing me rather than be exposed to public disgrace.”

I sent her to see a gynecologist. When she came back to see me about two weeks later, she looked gaunt, haggard and ill. “I came to thank you.” she said. “But they performed the operation to remove the fetus without an anesthetic. I didn’t have enough money to pay for the drugs to sedate me, so the doctor had to operate without them. The pain was unbearable. I nearly died”

As for my own story, my husband left for America a year ahead of me. When I submitted a request for passports for my children, the officer in charge refused to grant me one on the grounds that under the Islamic Sharia law I was not considered mentally fit to be the legal guardian of my children. He therefore asked me to bring a male from my husband’s family who would allow us to get my children’s passports.

No member of my husband’s family lived in our town except one of his cousins. He was an alcoholic, and because of his ill nature, my husband had never wanted to introduce him to me. To make a long story short, I went to his house and bribed him with fifty Syrian pounds which is equal to one dollar. As I left the immigration building, I couldn’t help thinking of the absurdity that we, women of the Muslim world are faced with: as a medical doctor, I wasn’t fit to be the legal guardian of my children, but a drunken man could control my entire destiny.

It is obvious that the teaching of my faith did not coincide with my basic rights, and for sure did not respect me as a professional woman. Under Islamic Sharia Law, for example, male Muslims are granted full control over their female relatives. A father can marry his daughter off at any age to any man of his choice without her consent.

Tragically, these accounts that I share with you, are not isolated stories by any means. They signify tragic stories of millions of other Muslim women all over the world, including here in Europe and in North America. On a daily bases, there are countless domestic abuses of Muslim women: rapes and honor killings which are frequently ignored by the so called “progressives,” who claim to be such big supporters of human rights..

Many in the establishment legally prosecute those brave people who dare to speak up and expose the dismal reality of violence against Muslim women, and the harsh reality of Sharia Law in general. Many people forbid our society from labeling the Islamic discrimination and maltreatment of women. Obviously, as we are presently witnessing, especially in Europe, the consequences for those who dare, are grave.

Accordingly, let me challenge those who are on the wrong side of history; how can a Muslim woman raise a fair-minded child when she is oppressed herself? Certainly, a male child who grows up watching his mother being treated with no respected, marginalized and abused, will almost inevitably have a distorted view that such behavior against women id permissible and normal; and be capable of the type of cruelty that was inflicted by the mob against Lara Logan. Is that not a dilemma which affects the West’s relationship with the Muslim world?

Sadly, Muslims and their enablers will keep defying those of us who dissent. We have a choice to make. We can continue to give in, or we can win people over by making it clear that our freedoms and our culture and our heritage will be protected — no matter what it takes.

In his show “Real Time” Bill Maher, an American comedian, stated last month: “Islam is the only religion that ‘kills you when you disagree with it. They claim: ‘Look, we are a religion of peace…and if you disagree we shall cut off your head.’” Maher predicts that “there are very few people who will call them on it.”

We are some of the very few who will call them on it. We are here with clarity and conviction to identify, to expose and, we hope, to marginalize the enemies of the free world. We are here to deter the destruction of our values by those who aspire to enslave us under the harsh and intolerable shackles of Sharia Law.

When a woman living under Islamic Sharia Law immigrates to a free Western country, it can become a complete transformative path, as happened to me. Now that I am free, I do not have to allow my rights to be abused by any religious or political authority. In the United States I am a person — equal to all others.

But how can we expect all other Muslim women in all parts of the free world to become emancipated when there are judicial institutions that help suppress their urge for freedom by punishing those who try to protect them, as happens to individuals like Lars Hedegaard, Geert Wilders, Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, Kurt Westergaard, Jesper Langballe, Ezra Levant, Rachel Ehrenfeld, Joe Kaufman and Mark Steyn among others? Too often, the West seems indifferent to its denigration by Islam. Times are difficult nowadays.

I, for one, do not take my rights for granted, and therefore I will continue to fight to protect these rights, not only for me but for all other Muslim women.

As citizens of the free world, we must have the moral aptitude to fight and protect our liberty by exposing the totalitarian abuse of Islam against women.

The enemy has both unwitting and malevolent allies. We are obliged to call on those who surrender to Islam’s oppressive doctrine, those who weaken all of us and unintentionally — or some deliberately — cause our decline.

We must realize that we are in a war. We must continue our unwavering resolve to serve as a buffer against the forces of evil. We cannot appease. We cannot compromise. We must recognize the enemies, and deter them at every pass.

We will not stifle our language. We will use the appropriate vocabulary to call things by their rightful name. We will continue to press for moral clarity, for open intellectual discourse with the precise definitions of our goals against their goals.

From now on, let us invoke the new terminology, “Truthphobes,” against those who call us “Islamophobes. “This is because their irrational fear of the truth is a detrimental factor for our survival as free people.

The bitter reality of Islam’s Sharia doctrine should not be ignored. Real victory can take place only in the spirit of genuine inquiry, transparency, and the fearless pursuit of truth. A culture that does not respect half of its population will never thrive and prosper.

Consequently, any attempt to make criticism of Islam forbidden and punishable by law is intolerable and will be strongly resisted by all people who love freedom.

When I was living in Syria, I cried often because I suffered. Now that I am free, I still cry, but for all other Muslim women over the world. I dream of a future when all Muslim women can savor a taste of my freedom. This is a dream that should be granted for all humanity and our job is to be unrelenting in pursuing that objective.

I challenge anyone responsible for the trial against Lars Hedegaard to reconsider the horrendous consequences of such preposterous allegations against him. Let us not revert to the Europe of the Middle Ages.

Let freedom of speech prevail.

‘Descendants of Mohammed’ Confront Newspapers Over Cartoons, Demanding Apologies and Eyeing Lawsuits

A Western  government that allows these frivolous lawsuits to go ahead is complicit in aiding and abetting the enemy and in the destruction of our free society.

(CNSNews.com) – After securing an apology from one Danish newspaper for publishing a cartoon satirizing Mohammed, a Saudi lawyer now plans to confront another 15 newspapers, filing lawsuits against them if necessary.

Faisal Yamani says he is acting on behalf of eight Muslim organizations representing “descendants of Mohammed.”

He told the Danish tabloid B.T. that he has 15 newspapers in his sights. His clients have made it clear they are ready to finance a campaign of lawsuits if the papers refuse to follow the example of the liberal daily Politiken and apologize. Yamani did not say how much he would aim to extract from the media organizations but referred to “a long and very expensive legal action.”

Cartoon-mania…

On Friday, Politiken published a formal apology to “anyone who was offended” by its decision to reproduce one of the 12 cartoons which triggered an international furor after another Danish paper, Jyllands-Posten, first published them in September 2005.

Politiken editor Toeger Seidenfaden said his paper had not published the sketch “as a statement of editorial opinion or values but merely as part of the newspaper’s news coverage.”

“It was never Politiken’s intention to offend Muslims in Denmark or elsewhere.”

In a joint statement with Yamani, the newspaper said that the Saudi lawyer’s clients had as a result of the apology now agreed “not to pursue any legal or administrative action against Politiken.”

The cartoon printed by Politiken was the one depicting a man wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with its fuse lit, drawn by cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.

Among the others, submitted by various artists, one showed “Mohammed” with eyes blacked out and carrying a large, curved knife, flanked by two burqa-clad women, while another depicted him telling a line of suicide bombers seeking entry to paradise: “Stop, stop, we have run out of virgins.” A more benign interpretation portrayed a man in white with a beard, a stick and a donkey.

The original appearance of the cartoons drew scant attention but after Danish Muslim clerics toured the Arab world to drum up reaction, protests erupted.

Muslims consider any images of the 7th century founder of their religion to be blasphemous. The association with terrorism and extremism further fueled the anger.

Protests were held in many Muslim nations, and in Nigeria, Libya and Afghanistan they turned deadly. Danish goods were boycotted in some Mideast countries, and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) used the issue to escalate its campaign at the United Nations aimed at outlawing the “defamation” of Islam.

Over time the protests ebbed, but after a plot was uncovered in 2008 to murder Westergaard, the turban cartoon was reprinted widely again in a show of solidarity. It was at this time that Politiken published it.

Its decision now to offer an apology drew strong criticism in Denmark, with Prime Minister Loekke Rasmussen saying he was troubled by the breaking of ranks.

“If this is an expression of breaking the unity that has existed among Danish newspapers and in Danish society, it is a matter of serious, serious concern,” he said. “If this is a question of bowing to a threat in order to avoid a court case, I am also concerned.”

Foreign Minister Lene Espersen said Danish newspapers should “stick together when they are met with threats.”

Westergaard was quoted as saying the decision amounted to giving in to the fear of terror, and Jyllands-Posten editor Jorn Mikkelsen, said it marked a “sad day for Danish media, for freedom of speech and for Politiken.”

Yamani, who is a partner in the Jeddah-based law firm Ahmed Zaki Yamani, approached 11 Danish newspapers several months ago on behalf of his clients. No other paper has yet publicly agreed to the proposed apology agreement.

Yamani claims to be representing eight organizations, based in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, Jordan, Australia and the Palestinian self-rule territories. He says they comprise 94,923 descendants of Mohammed.

The main client is the Cairo-based Union of Al-Ashraf (Niqabat al Ashraf), which says it has more than 80,000 registered members. Ashraf (plural of Sharifs) are Muslims claiming direct lineage to Mohammed via Fatima, the daughter from the first of his multiple marriages.

Queries sent to the organization’s president, Mahmoud el-Sharif, brought no response.

‘Deeply hurt’

In a statement reacting to the apology by Politiken, an OIC spokesman said 1.5 billion Muslims had “felt humiliated, insulted and deeply hurt by the publication of the cartoons.” The organization hoped the apology would be replicated by other newspapers involved and by the cartoonists

(The OIC spokesman does not speak for 1.5 billion muslims. He assumes and claims he does. Besides, Muslims have no right not to be  humiliated, insulted or deeply hurt for worshipping a pedophile warlord./ed)

He said the OIC was “strongly committed to freedom of expression but believes that it should be exercised responsibly so as not to create incitement and provocation leading to social unrest and disturb interfaith harmony.” (He is a liar. The OIC is determined to destroy freedom of expression…/ed)

Writing on a Web site of Britain’s Daily Telegraph, Douglas Murray, the director of the Centre for Social Cohesion – a think tank focusing on extremism in Britain – said the apology “epitomizes one of the most aggravating trends currently being accepted, which is the notion that Muslims somehow have deeper feelings than the rest of the world.”

“Most of us regularly have our deepest feelings trodden upon, not least by the expressions of bigoted Muslim attitudes,” he wrote. “But we don’t burn things, we don’t intimidate people, and we don’t force apologies out of newspapers for offence caused. Because we recognize that being offended is part of being a grown up in a free society.

“The sooner more Muslims learn that the better.”

Bahrain has no plans to close legal loophole allowing for child brides

“The government prompted a storm of controversy last year when it pushed through a law which set the minimum marriage age for girls at 15. Lawmakers from the largest opposition bloc in the Bahraini Parliament had opposed the legislation, saying it went against Islamic principles.”

Now wait a minute. Islamic apologists in the West are forever telling us that Aisha was not nine years old when Muhammad consummated his marriage with her, and that only greasy Islamophobes think otherwise. Yet the largest opposition bloc in the Bahraini Parliament seems to be full of greasy Islamophobes, since the only “Islamic principles” that would lead them to oppose setting the minimum marriage age for girls at fifteen arise from Muhammad’s example in marrying Aisha.

Another honor killing in modern, moderate Jordan

In 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that “Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values.”

The news from Bangladesh is that a teenage girl was recently punished with 101 lashes after she was raped and impregnated. Village elders apparently decide such matters in rural Bangladesh where Sharia law prevails. The girl’s family quickly married her off but when the pregnancy emerged her husband demanded a divorce and reparations. So the elders issued a series of fatwas against the girl’s family, fining the father and expelling the family from the village. Oh, and they pardoned the rapist.You may feel that we have no business worrying about what happens in remotest Bangladesh, but since we are at war on multiple fronts against such people, or rather they are with us, we’d do well to know our enemy. Why do these outrages occur so consistently in the Muslim world, you might ask, and does it tell us some ineradicable truth about the nature of Islam? Abuses like these are not exclusive to Islam but in no other culture these days are they actually upheld by authorities citing formal tenets of justice.

Turn it up, down or sideways, you may find it hard to discern any hint of moral symmetry in the judgment. You may wish to blame it on the universally evident wonkiness of Islamic scriptural law or even the absence of such in a remote village. But let us try for a moment to follow the logic. The girl kept the rape a secret, it seems, because she was terrified. Perhaps her family colluded with her silence. The quickly married husband felt duped. Fair enough. But 101 lashes for the girl whose life was ruined? How about sympathy and support? And by what code of social or divine casuistry do they pardon the rapist? [...]

In Syria, as elsewhere, many conservative Muslims–including women–see any creeping sympathy for rape victims as the beginnings of westernization by stealth, the tip of the iceberg of feminism. In plenty of Muslim countries–Morroco, Yemen, Bangladesh–honor killings are often not punishable by law if they’re deemed “justified,” and not infrequently the rapist benefits from customary codes of mercy in place of the victim. This is especially true where a weak central state gives way to tribal law in remote regions or even in overcrowded and unpolicable urban areas. In some places the problem barely exists–in Iran,for example, and in Turkey outside of the Kurdish areas. But everywhere this central principle applies: tribalism equals Islamic conservativism equals bad news for women. [...]

A strange truth often prevails in such cases: the more innocent the girl, the greater the need to martyr her, for at a certain point appearance is everything–the shame has spread so far and deep that nothing else will suffice but the harshest display of public purgation. One can imagine that in the Darwinian conditions of Arabian life where Islam first prevailed and then was later repeatedly reinforced, by other warrior races from elsewhere down the centuries, right up to Saudi Wahhabism, rumors of females running loose denoted weakness in the tribe. And soon, no doubt, other tribes might begin to probe for those weaknesses–an invitation to disaster. Without going into the nuances of Suras, Hadiths, Fiqh, Adat and the like, we can safely say that a large chunk of Islamic scripture explicitly cites custom and tradition as a perfectly valid, often the only, authority in matters of jurisprudence. It was always done this way, and anyone trying to effect a change is contravening the divine scheme.

Sure there’s a contradiction here, because Islam also teaches that before the Prophet’s message the world lived in Jahilliya, a profane state of ignorance, so what about traditions that Islam inherited? Let us leave such perplexities for the Imams to fight over. In talking about honor killings, we are talking about customs so ancient they predate the scriptural religions of our era, indeed to a time of pagan or animist superstitions. Ancient civilizations often believed that undue attention from the gods invited catastrophe, not least as provoked by the form of a beautiful daughter. The male gods were forever zooming down to copulate with a mortal girl, from which there followed inevitable myriad disasters. Back in the 1990s when I collected an antique textile from the Caucasus, a Kaytak, I took a trip into Daghestan and found that Kaytaks were used to cover the faces of infants in order to keep them from attracting negative attention from the gods. In ancient times there was no greater curse than the arbitrary curse of the gods who suddenly singled you out for ineffable reasons of their own.

And so we get to Islam and the honor killing of innocents. A much older code than Islam is at work here, one that Islam doesn’t entirely repudiate as it tries to accommodate and sanctify tribal tradition. The more innocent the victim, the more she must be sacrificed because the curse is all the more palpably divine for being arbitrary. Muslim conservatives often try to retro-justify the situation by assertions that the girl no doubt behaved lewdly or failed to follow parental rules. Even if true, what law was the rapist following? Islamic group CAIR files complaint with US School Department over Islamic prayer in school

My sympathies go out to this child – who has been so frightened into thinking that if she doesn’t make all the required prayers in a day – her God will reject her.

There is a bit of he said she said here – though it could be that CAIR doesn’t have all the facts – the school district says the child can pray quietly in the school – but coming from the child’s uncle – it seems that the family are demanding a dedicated room for the child to pray in – and the school says that is not possible.

Further in a vindictive fashion – CAIR has asked that the school faculty undergo ‘sensitivity training’ – so that there will be no backlash against the child – from the staff. Previously CAIR’s chairman has said – Islam is in the US to conquer – and not to be equal with other religions.

Here is the slightly sharper end of nasty.

CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said Friday that if the Lewiston School Department did not address its four requests to allow prayer, modify school policy, institute training and protect Aden from retaliation, “we wouldn’t really have much choice but to take the case further”

It is like Fort Hood no one wants to offend the Muslim – it appears CAIR is making full use of that power.

LEWISTON — A national Muslim civil rights organization has filed a formal request with the Lewiston School Department to allow a middle school student to pray on school property. The group also wants Lewiston to modify existing policy and provide “constitutionally protected religious accommodation,” such as a designated prayer room.

The group has also requested the school department institute diversity training for school staff, and to ensure the middle-schooler won’t face retaliation because of her request to pray at the Lewiston Middle School.

According to the Washington, D.C.,-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, seventh-grader Nasra Aden had been routinely “praying discreetly during her free time or lunch break in a corner of a school hallway.” But, on Tuesday, CAIR asserts a teacher told Aden “never to pray on school property” after Aden was seen preparing to kneel in prayer in a corner of one of the hallways.

After Aden told her mother, Jamad Warsame, what happened, Warsame spoke with school Principal Maureen Lachappelle and asked the school to accommodate her daughter’s desire to pray. According to CAIR, Warsame’s request was rebuffed and she has been “forced to pick up her daughter every day and take her to a nearby park to pray.”

Lachappelle said Aden is not being forced to leave school to pray, but that the district accommodated her mother’s request for her to leave the campus this past week for prayer.

Muslims around the world are awaiting the conclusion of Turkey’s half-century-old application to join the European Union as a sign of tolerance from the West, a Turkish official said on Friday.

“This process is very closely monitored, followed and evaluated by 1.5 billion Muslims in the world,” Egemen Bagis, minister for EU affairs, told Reuters. “Every meeting I have with my European counterparts, I can feel the pressure of these 1.5 billion people on my shoulders.”

* Is there nobody in the whole of Europe to nail this headbangers coffee-filter to his skull and send him back with seasons greetings? Why should we care about the “pressure” by billions of Muselmanic  lunatics?

Turkey, which straddles Europe and Asia, applied for membership to the EU’s forerunner in 1959 and became an EU candidate in 1999, but remains far from membership. The issue remains politically divisive among the bloc’s member states.

If the EU turns its back on Turkey, not only “Muslims all around the world, but all people, all humans, will somehow feel that they have been isolated from the West,” Bagis said.

At least 156 people have been killed in unrest in Xinjiang over the past week and the Islamic world has sought to bring attention to the plight of Muslim Uygurs in the Chinese region.

In Istanbul, about 5,000 people demonstrated outside the Fatih mosque after Friday prayers, according to NTV television. ”No To Ethnic Cleansing” demonstrators chanted, while burning mainland products.

About 50 Muslim men took their prayer rugs to the Sliema front yesterday after the planning authority sealed off their place of worship. The Muslims said the Malta Environment and Planning Authority had locked them out of their flat in Sliema where they used to pray, so they decided to take their cause outside.

“We are not here to protest or threaten violence but to express our fundamental human right to gather in prayer,” Bader Zina, one of the leaders, said. According to Mepa, a number of complaints had been received by neighbours and the flat did not have a licence to be used as a place of worship.

The Muslims, many of whom Maltese, were dressed in traditional clothing. They had a permit and police protection and said this might become a regular appointment until their flat was reopened.

This behaviour did not go down well with a group of Maltese onlookers who warned that if this happened again “there will be trouble”.

“Malta is a Catholic country. They have no right to come here and pray in front of us. I don’t care what they do in the privacy of their own home but not here,” one Maltese woman said.

“We’ve had enough. If you were to do the same in their country they would stone you. I can’t understand how they could have been given a permit for this, including police presence and all!” her husband added, visibly disturbed by what he saw.

“They should go to a mosque. That is where they belong. Or in some hole somewhere. But not here where I get my children to eat and have a good time. I would have had no problem if they were Catholics praying… in Malta we are all Catholics so it’s not a problem, but not them. Even the tourists were disgusted,” he claimed, as his teenage son nodded in agreement.

The owner of a nearby kiosk said she had no problem with them and some were her friends and clients. But she acknowledged that their presence lost her a lot of business yesterday. She said they should be allowed to remain in their flat where they would not be disturbing anyone.

Another man said the praying did not disturb him and it was less noisy than he would have thought. “I don’t see what the problem is. These are Maltese people with a different religion. Why shouldn’t they be allowed to pray quietly outdoors if we can have noisy feasts and drunken brawls?”

Mr Zina said they did not want to anger anyone: “All we want to do is praise God Satan”.

He said that besides the Sliema flat, another in Buġibba had also been locked up by Mepa simply because it was used by Muslims to gather in prayer. The residents of the flats had to seek alternative accommodation.

“Since when do you need a licence to pray? I don’t see anyone closing down other prayer groups. And, anyway, I would rather have a group of Catholics singing praise to God next to my house than a bar,” Mr Zina said.

He explained that Muslims prayed five times a day and it was preferable to do so in groups. He did not sense a negative reaction from the Maltese in the area, except for one woman who insisted on walking her dog in front of them. When she tried it the second time, she was stopped by the police.

He said it was sad to see some Maltese Catholics who feared or were intolerant towards Muslims and efforts should be made to encourage tolerance and integration.

Although he condemned any type of violence or revenge, he said that if people were discriminated against and hurt, it would become impossible to control a backlash.
