Eight cyclists killed in accident in Italy

La Repubblica has named the driver of the car as Chafik Elketani, a 21-year-old of Moroccan origin. He is reported to have been under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash. He was also driving without a licence, as he was serving a six-month suspension for dangerous driving.

The trial of Issa Ibrahim Islam, a truck driver who went on a killing rampage on Nakba Day, opened at the Tel Aviv District Court on Thursday.

The Kfar Kassem resident is accused of killing 29 year-old Aviv Morag and injuring 17 others while recklessly driving a truck along Bar-Lev Street in Tel Aviv last May. The driver also ran over several vehicles during the rampage.

A psychiatric evaluation submitted by the prosecution found Islam fit to stand trial, and determined that the defendant was lucid while he committed the act.

During the hearing, eyewitness recounted the horrors of that Sunday morning, as they were commuting to work and school: “He screamed ‘Allahu Akbar’ and then threw the traffic light on my head,” recalled Shani Oz, one of the witnesses.

“The truck collided into my car and the back windshield shattered to pieces,” said Amitai Asif, “People were scared. I had blood all over my face even after being taken into the ambulance,” he noted.

According to the indictment, Islam carried on with his rampage even after colliding into several vehicles. “The defendant did not stop, but rather stepped on the gas and continued his killing spree,” the indictment read.

The trial opened a week after David Morag, the father of the victim killed during the rampage, committed suicide.

“Aviv was his whole world,” said a friend of the family, “The last few months were very difficult for him, and the holidays were even twice as hard.”

Islam’s defense attorney, Yehosua Resnik, rejected the accusations, claiming that “the incident was nothing more than an accident that went wrong.”

Shame on you, Yehosua Resnik.

Not to worry, folks: all’s well! The bomb lacked a detonator and could not have exploded, according to the police….

A suspected bomb was found in an empty underground train carriage in Rome today.

But police said it lacked a detonator and could not have exploded.

The device, described by one police source as rudimentary, was found by a driver preparing a train for service in a marshalling yard near the Rebibbia metro station at about 9am, transport authority ATAC said.

It was in a box with cables, batteries and antennas, an ATAC spokesman said. (Daily Mail)

Italy: Muslims appeal to president over ‘discrimination’ in north

Rome, 24 Sept. (AKI) - Muslims in Italy have written to the country’s president Giorgio Napolitano claiming their constitutional rights are being violated by the anti-immigrant policies of the Northern League party.

A lack of mosques and halal food outlets in the north were especially serious problems, said the letter to Napolitano (photo), written by the union of Islamic communities in Italy (UCOII). Adnkronos International received a copy of the letter.

“I write to you as the custodian and guarantor of the Italian constitution the Italian’s Republic’s highest judge, to draw to your attention the day-to-day difficulties faced by Muslims in a large area of the country,” said the letter signed by UCOII’s president Ezzeddin Elzir.

There are ways to deal with these cretins:

(Sharia-) Law-abiding Muslim immigrants and foreign residents who have strived to integrate in Italy’s northern regions and who do not present any real security threat, are being treated as second-class citizens, according to UCOII.

“Chiefly in the north of Italy, their religious freedom and personal dignity, upheld by the constitution and international conventions to which our country is a signatory, are gravely compromised,” the letter continued.

The letter did not specifically name the Northern League, which control several regions and most local councils in the north of Italy, but referred to “a certain political hostility made worse by the irresponsible action of certain local administrations.”

“Fundamental rights are being denied, such as places of worship and the availability of food prepared according to Muslim precepts,” the letter stated.

“There is barely a Muslim community in northern Italy that does not come up against outright bans on mosques arrogantly imposed by local councils who malevontly invoke petty local bylaws to deny a basic constitutional freedom.”

UCOII asked for specific intervention from Napolitano over a school in Adro, in the Lombardy province of Brescia that has said it will only exempts Muslim pupils from eating pork if they have an allergy to it or on other health grounds.

No surprises here. Gaddafi follows the script of his holy profit:

“Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war…When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them….If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them.” — Muhammad (Sahih Muslim 4294)

Gaddafi invited Europe to accept Islam yesterday. Now he has asked it to pay the jizya. Will he follow through with the third option as well?

Jizya is a much more apt analogy.

Italians have reacted with indignation after Muammar Gaddafi lectured 200 young actresses and models on the superiority of Islam, a day after saying that Europeans should all become Muslim.

Silvio Berlusconi’s increasingly close relationship with Col Gaddafi is becoming a source of embarrassment for the Italian prime minister, according to opposition MPs and even members of the government.

Rosy Bindi, an MP from the main opposition party, said that the spectacle of hundreds of Italian women being bussed in at Col Gaddafi’s whim was a “humiliating violation” of their dignity.  (More)

Libyan leader (terrorist)  Muammar Gaddafi gave a lesson on Islam and copies of the Koran to a few hundred young Italian women on he arrival in Rome for his fourth visit in a year.

It was the second time the Libyan leader – who travels with female bodyguards and fancies himself a self-styled feminist – had staged such an event for Italian women, who were recruited by a modelling agency and paid an undisclosed sum to attend.

Michela, who asked that her last name not be used, told Associated Press Television News that three of the participants converted to Islam on the spot on Sunday.

“It was a really beautiful meeting and went very well,” she said. “He is very easygoing and he gave us a copy of the Koran. Three girls converted themselves to Islam during the ceremony. It was a beautiful event.”

Other participants, though, identifying themselves as Roman Catholics in this overwhelmingly Catholic country, said Gaddafi had urged others to convert and had dismissed Christianity as unimportant.

Between 200 and 500 young women attended, arriving in 10 buses at the Libyan ambassador’s residence just as Gaddafi’s plane was landing at Rome’s Ciampino airport at the start of a two-day visit.

The visit, amid steadily improving business ties between Libya and its former colonial ruler, also marked the second anniversary of a friendship treaty in which Italy agreed to pay Libya $US5 billion as compensation for its 30-year occupation, which ended in 1943.

When Gaddafi was in Italy in November for a UN food summit, he hosted 200 young Italian women who had been recruited and paid 50 euros (about $A70) by the same modelling agency to attend. Then, too, he gave a lecture on Islam and handed out copies of the Koran.

This time around, the women wouldn’t say how much they had been paid, only that they had received a small “reimbursement”.

During his first visit to Italy in June 2009, Gaddafi invited 700 prominent Italian businesswomen and female politicians to listen to a lecture in which he criticised Islam’s treatment of women, but also suggested male relatives should decide if a woman can drive.

Italy’s top appeals court on Wednesday jailed Egyptian-born Abu Imad on terrorism charges.The imam, who previously led prayers at Milan’s central mosque was taken to police headquarters and was to be transferred to the city’s San Vittore prison, the sources told AKI.Imad was the imam at Milan’s Viale Jenner mosque until early 2009 but was not previously arrested. Under Italian law, suspects can remain at liberty until they have completed their appeal, if a judge does not consider they are likely to flee the country or tamper with any evidence against them.

Flashback: Undercover Mosque

Italy’s highest appeals court, the Court of Cassation, on Wednesday upheld a previous prison sentence imposed on Imad by a Milan court in December 2007.

The court sentenced Imad to three years and eight months in prison for conspiracy to carry out a terrorist act.

Ten other people were also jailed for the same offence, receiving sentences that varied from two to 10 years, while four others were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Milan prosecutors had asked for jail terms ranging from four years and six months to 15 years for all the defendants.

Imad and his co-defendants had allegedly set up a Salafite cell that was active in Milan and elsewhere in the northern Lombardy region.

The cell’s mission is believed to have been recruiting suicide bombers, trafficking illegal immigrants and indoctrination.

Italy: Northern League doubles support

The Northern League, an anti immigration party, which has now become pivotal in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s ruling coalition, has seen it’s support more than double in the last five years.

Led by firebrand Umberto Bossi, who once called for the Italian navy to shell boats carrying illegal immigrants towards the country, his victory mirrors those recently by far right parties in Hungary, Holland and France.  The League has campaigned against the building of mosques and are also pressing for legislation on the wearing of burkas.  more

When I first saw this post, I thought it was tongue in cheek, some kind of prank. Now that I had a look at the video I’m  rather irritated.  Especially in light of this:

Interestingly enough, the hand kissing was done exactly at the time this was being uttered:
