MOGADISHU (AFP) — As Somalia sinks ever deeper into hunger and despair, attacking foreign ships bottle-necking into the Gulf of Aden is proving to be one of the few profitable activities in the country.

Abdi Garad, who describes himself as the commander of one of the first groups of pirates who started marauding Somalia’s much-frequented waters, has no qualms about listing the personal advantages derived from piracy.

“We enjoy life with the money we get as a ransom,” he told AFP from an undisclosed location in the semi-autonomous breakaway region of Puntland.

“Yes to jihad, just not now.”

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - The Muslim call to prayer fills the halls of a Cairo computer shopping center, followed immediately by the click of locking doors as the young, bearded tech salesmen close shop and line up in rows to pray.

Business grinding to a halt for daily prayers is not unusual in conservative Saudi Arabia, but until recently it was rare in the Egyptian capital, especially in affluent commercial districts like Mohandiseen, where the mall is located.

But nearly the entire three-story mall is made up of computer stores run by Salafis, an ultraconservative Islamic movement that has grown dramatically across the Middle East in recent years.

“We all pray together,” said Yasser Mandi, a salesman at the Nour el-Hoda computer store. “When we know someone who is good and prays, we invite them to open a shop here in this mall.” Even the name of Mandi’s store is religious, meaning “Light of Guidance.”

Critics worry that the rise of Salafists in Egypt, as well as in other Arab countries such as Jordan and Lebanon, will crowd out the more liberal and tolerant version of Islam long practiced there. They also warn that the doctrine is only a few shades away from that of violent groups like al-Qaida—that it effectively preaches “Yes to jihad, just not now.”

On a website devoted to Ramadhan, the Muslim Brotherhood posted a series of articles by Dr. Ahmad ‘Abd Al-Khaleq about Al-Walaa Wa’l-Baraa, an Islamic doctrine which, in its fundamentalist interpretation, stipulates absolute allegiance to the community of Muslims and total rejection of non-Muslims and of Muslims who have strayed from the path of Islam.

In his articles, the writer argues that according to this principle, a Muslim can come closer to Allah by hating all non-Muslims - Christians, Jews, atheists, or polytheists - and by waging jihad against them in every possible manner.

Foiled by toilet lock: How Muslim convert set off bombs in error because he couldn’t open door

A British Muslim convert with a mental age of ten was unable to blow up a restaurant because he’d locked himself in a toilet.

Nicky Reilly, 22, had gone into the cubicle of an Exeter eaterie to assemble the nailbombs from chemicals in bottles. He then planned to rush among the 50 diners - many of them children - and detonate the devices.

However, he found he couldn’t unfasten the lock and then one of the bombs exploded, setting the others he was holding off.

Reilly, who was groomed over the internet by extremists into becoming a suicide bomber, was arrested when he staggered outside with serious facial injuries.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (BosNewsLife)– Christians in the southern Philippines feared more attacks Tuesday, October 7, a day after the European Union said it would extend seven million euros, or almost 10 million dollars, in emergency aid for people displaced by the Muslim insurgency in the area.
The announcement by the EU, described as one of the largest sources of official development aid to the predominantly Roman Catholic southeast Asian country’s Muslim region, followed similar pledges of more aid from United Nations agencies. Yet Christian families on the island
of Mindanao have told reporters that they remain concerned amid reports Islamic rebels could attack them at midnight.

Canadian Forces seek recruits at mosque, encounter “indignation” among some members

Among the “indignant” members, there is a curious logical disconnect. The same people would most likely insist that the problem of Islamic jihad is limited to a Tiny Minority of Extremists who have “hijacked” Islam. And yet, apparently, neither Muslims nor non-Muslims are supposed to fight those people, either.

* Or could it be that if asked if they were willing to fight against their host-country they would all shout “jihaaaad” and “allahu akbar..?”

* What? In spite of all the efforts by the Arroyo government to ‘respect the holy month of Ramadan’, in spite of making major concessions, offering autonomy and addressing multiple Moro-Muslim grievances, no peace with the ‘RoP?’  So now, as ‘interfaith dialogue’ continues, we are to believe that it is only a few ‘rogue elements’ that keep fighting the jihad?
