….When he was running for president and seeking votes from some of the 1.5 million Armenian Americans, the lying Muslim POTUS had no qualms about using the term genocide and criticized the Bush administration for firing an ambassador who dared to say the word. As a senator, he supported legislation calling the killings genocide.. He said that “the Armenian Genocide is not an allegation, a personal opinion, or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact.” He added, “An official policy that calls on diplomats to distort the historical facts is an untenable policy.”  NYT

In a statement issued during a weekend retreat in North Carolina, US President Barack Obama on Saturday (April 24) re-affirmed his “own view of what occurred in 1915,” but, as expected, did not use the word “genocide” on this day marked worldwide by Armenians as the startup of a genocidal campaign 95 years ago by Ottoman Turks that killed 1.5 million.

It is “a devastating chapter in the history of the Armenian people, and we must keep its memory alive in honor of those who were murdered and so that we do not repeat the grave mistakes of the past,” Obama said in his statement.

Activists outside the White House, led by Armenian National Committee of America’s executive director Aram Hamparian held a protest encouraging Obama to “keep your promise”.

In his second Day of Remembrance statement since becoming president, Obama – who as a candidate had vowed to recognize the Genocide – used words now familiar to Armenian sympathizers who have lived through more than a decade of US presidents who betrayed campaign promises on the issue.

“On this solemn day of remembrance, we pause to recall that 95 years ago one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century began,” he said in a statement released while the president played golf.

“I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in 1915, and my view of that history has not changed,” the statement said. “It is in all of our interest to see the achievement of a full, frank and just acknowledgment of the facts.”

The president’s statement says he is “encouraged by the dialogue among Turks and Armenians, and within Turkey itself, regarding this painful history.” Obama did not mention, however, that – since a sharply-worded address by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan Thursday, accusing Turkey of having stonewalled efforts at normalization — dialogue has effectively been silenced between the two enemy states.

Following are excerpts from a sermon delivered by Islamic scholar Sheik Yousuf Al-Qaradhawi, which aired on Qatar TV on December 11, 2009.

Sheik Yousuf Al-Qaradhawi: Brothers, I would like to talk to you about two issues. First, I would like to talk about what is going on in our countries these days. I could almost ask what kind of society we are living in – Muslim or Christian. What is going on in the shops and on the streets of Doha – all these celebrations of the so-called birth of Jesus, the so-called Christmas? It is as if we are living in a Christian European country.

We do not even celebrate [the birth] of the Prophet Muhammad, but we celebrate Christmas?! Christmas trees, 4 or 5 meters high, are erected in shops, which are owned by families known to be Muslim. What is this?! It means that the nation is abandoning its Muslim identity. Islam wants us to maintain our Islamic uniqueness. They prevent us from building minarets… I was just talking about that last week. They banned the building of minarets, and they are about to ban the building of mosques. 41% of the people polled in France [support] preventing the building of mosques, while 47% support the banning of minarets as well as a mosques. Even the mosques…

Are the Muslims in Europe and America – and there are millions of them in some countries – able to celebrate Ramadhan and the Muslim holidays in the city centers, like some people do in our Arab and Muslim countries and cities, in the Arabian Peninsula? Is this conceivable?! What has happened to this nation?!

I call upon these shop owners… Just for a profit… They do it for money… People who want to buy will come without all this. Why do you pretend to celebrate a religion that is not yours, when they are preventing us from performing our rites? They prevent us from building a beautiful minaret, which is considered a beautiful piece of architecture, regardless of the religious aspect.

Brothers, I wanted to convey my message, and warn my people that this is prohibited, shameful, and inappropriate. It points to stupidity in the treatment of others, and ignorance of what Islam obliges us to do about this.

There is another issue that I wanted to talk about in brief. Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. I don’t know why they gave him this prize. What did Mr. Obama accomplish to deserve this peace prize? There is no peace in Iraq. There is no peace in Afghanistan. There is no peace in Somalia. There is no peace in any country. He hasn’t even managed to force Israel to cease its settlement activity.

He withdrew some soldiers from Iraq, only to send them to Afghanistan – from one war to another, from one bloodshed to another. Blood continues to be shed in Iraq and in Afghanistan, and I should add Pakistan, Yemen, Sudan, and so on. The world is boiling with war, so what did Mr. Obama get the Nobel Peace Prize for?

Statue of a Young Obama To Watch Over Indonesian Capital

A bronze statue of a young Barack Obama is set to stand in the Menteng neighborhood of Central Jakarta where the US president spent part of his childhood. 

“The statue is being erected to inspire Indonesian children and help them remember that they can be whatever they set their hearts on,” Ron Mullers, the chairman of the Friends of Obama Foundation, told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday.

The 2-meter-tall likeness of a 10-year-old Obama, built at a cost of more than Rp 100 million ($10,600), will stand in a corner of Menteng Park, Mullers said. 

He added that the statue was meant to remind children that someone their age who once played in the neighborhood had become a world leader. 

Mullers said the statue was commissioned by the foundation and was designed by Edi Chaniago, who took three months to complete the project. 

The project was sponsored by 10 individuals, including businesswoman Mien R Uno and businessman Hashim Djojohadikusumo. Mullers said the statue’s location had been selected because the area had been Obama’s playground when he lived in Jakarta as a young boy in the 1970s. Obama moved to Jakarta with his mother, Ann Dunham, and his Indonesian stepfather, Lolo Soetoro. Dunlop and Lolo met at the University of Hawaii. 

He said US Ambassador Cameron Hume would be present at the unveiling of the statue along with students and teachers from the nearby Menteng 01 Elementary School where Obama studied as a child. 

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo is expected to be on hand to unveil the statue. 

Ery Basworo, head of the Jakarta Parks and Cemetery Agency, said the foundation had asked for permission to use the spot in Taman Menteng a month ago. He said he supported the project as a symbol of Indonesian friendship with the United States. 

“We only provided the place and the statue did not cost us anything,” he said, adding that the agency would cooperate with the foundation to organize maintenance and upkeep. 

Sylviana Murni, Central Jakarta’s mayor, told the Globe by phone that she welcomed the statue in Menteng Park , which is under her authority. 

“The statue represents childhood spirit. Obama embodies the ideal of a successful child,” she said.
