The violence is believed the work of ethnic Malay militants, although no group has made a credible claim of responsibility for the attacks.  The region was an independent Muslim sultanate until annexed by predominantly Buddhist Thailand a century ago.

So there you have it. Because once upon a time there was ‘an independent Muslim sultanate’ which was annexed by Buddhist Thailand (after several centuries of raids and attacks)  the jihadists are justified in their unholy war against the country that feeds them.  (More)

(Reuters) – A roadside bomb killed nine civilians and wounded two in Thailand’s southernmost province on Tuesday, police said, the deadliest attack in 19 months in the predominantly Muslim region bordering Malaysia.

The victims were all Buddhists who were travelling in a pickup truck to hunt wild pigs when the bomb exploded in Yala, one of three provinces beset by sporadic insurgent violence in a seven-year separatist rebellion.

It was the region’s deadliest attack since gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at a mosque during evening prayers on June 9, 2009, killing 11 people.

More than 4,300 people have been killed since 2004 as ethnic Malay Muslims fight for autonomy from Thailand’s Buddhist majority in the rubber-rich region.

It was the second major attack in six days and will be a blow to the government and security forces, who say the level of violence has fallen significantly in recent months, citing tighter security and a spate of public relation campaigns.

Four soldiers were killed and five wounded last Wednesday when rebels armed with grenades and assault rifles stormed an army outpost in Narathiwat province. Media said at least 20 rifles were stolen.

Police said Tuesday’s bomb was planted in the road and detonated remotely by a cellphone, destroying the truck. Roadside blasts are common in the region, but military and police patrols are usually the targets.

The violence is believed the work of ethnic Malay militants, although no group has made a credible claim of responsibility for the attacks.

The region was an independent Muslim sultanate until annexed by predominantly Buddhist Thailand a century ago.

About 80 percent of the people in the three southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat are Muslim.

Attacks are typically drive-by shootings, ambushes and roadside blasts although car bombings and beheadings have taken place in recent years, despite the presence of 40,000 troops.

The leader of the Philippines’ long-running Muslim insurgency said Monday he was hopeful of signing a peace deal during new President Benigno Aquino’s six-year term.

“Peace deal” means what?

Islamic scholar Bassam Tibi: “Only when Muslim power is weak is “temporary truce” (hudna) allowed.”

In the Muslim view, treaties with Infidels are NOT to be obeyed. They are to be entered into when Muslims feel that they are at the moment too weak to do otherwise, and where they sense that they can gain, in the end, by entering temporarily into a treaty with Infidels. For Muslims, every treaty with Infidels is merely a “truce” treaty, a “hudna.” The very idea that Muslims could recognize the permanence of an Infidel nation-state goes against everything in Islam.

Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) leader Murad Ebrahim said rebel negotiators were prepared to resume peace talks with the government after the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in September, as flagged by Aquino earlier.

“We can see that they (Aquino’s government) are really addressing the problems of the Bangsa Moro (local Muslims),” Murad told a small group of reporters at a rebel camp outside the southern city of Cotabato.

“He has six years to resolve the problem. If he is really sincere, we can’t go wrong in solving the problem in his time.

(“If he is really sincere”- you see, Muslims can be trusted. Its the infidels who lie and deceive…)

The 12,000-strong MILF has been waging an insurgency for more than three decades to carve out a separate Muslim state in the mostly Catholic country’s southern island of Mindanao.

The rebellion (Jihad) has killed over 150,000 people and stunted economic growth in the mineral rich but impoverished southern region.

Aquino’s predecessor, Gloria Arroyo, failed to sign a peace deal with the MILF during the nine years she was in power. She stepped down on June 30, as mandated by the constitution. (“She failed to sign a peace deal”, its all her fault…)

Large scale fighting erupted in 2008 when rogue MILF commanders launched attacks in response to the Supreme Court outlawing a proposed deal that would have given them control over vast tracts of land.

More than 750,000 people were displaced at the height of the fighting, triggering a humanitarian crisis.

About 400 civilians and fighters from both sides were also killed.

Both sides agreed to a ceasefire last year, but the MILF opted to stall peace talks until Arroyo stepped down.

Murad’s appearance at Camp Darapanan Monday was the first for the international media in about a year, and came shortly after Aquino told Congress he planned to resume talks with the MILF soon.

Darapanan is a sprawling agricultural enclave on Mindanao island that the government acknowledges is also the MILF’s political base.

A battle-scarred mujahedeen who the Philippine military said fought the Soviets during the Afghan invasion, Murad took over the helm of the MILF in 2003 and has since engaged the government in talks. (which confirms once again that the jihad is global…)

Murad warned that any further delay in the peace talks could have dire consequences, describing a recent military announcement of a deadline to crush the Muslim insurgency within three years as “threatening”.

“There are no major violations in the (current) ceasefire. But it is expected to change dramatically (if) the peace talks continue to hang in the balance,” he said.

“If we are ready for peace, we are also ready for war.”

Sure thing. Give us what we demand or you will regret it….

Murad also repeated comments from last year that he and other senior MILF figures wanted peace soon because of concerns younger Muslim militants would eventually push a more uncompromising position.

Who will control these “younger Muslim militants who will eventually push a more uncompromising position?

“We really want to finish this insurgency in our lifetime because the next generation of fighters are more radical,” said Murad, 62.

How does Murad want to finish it? The jihad is permanent and relentless. The Muslims are commanded to wage war on the unbelievers until they submit, pay the jiziya with willing submission or convert to Islam. Nothing else will do.

Murad also questioned the US military presence in the south, where a rotating number of about 500 American forces have been training their Filipino counterparts to combat Al Qaeda-linked militants since 2002.

“We don’t find their presence a necessity here. It only complicates the situation,” he said.

“There is no agenda for US troops to stay in the south.”

Sure not. Overwhelming force. That complicates the situation. Can’t have that.

The new Philippine government will resume peace talks with Muslims, but will review the structure of the process, Aquino’s peace adviser said.

The Philippines will set up a compensation fund for thousands of people displaced by deadly fighting between troops and Muslim fighters in 2008, President Benigno Aquino’s peace adviser said on Thursday.

The new Philippine government will resume peace talks with Muslims and Maoist-led guerrillas, but will review the structure of the process, the official overseeing the issue said.

The administration of President Benigno Aquino III would set up a fund in the next 100 days to help those displaced by fighting on the southern island of Mindanao, Adviser Teresita Quintos Deles told reporters.

Potential donors from the international community have already expressed interest in contributing to the pool of money, although the specifics of the fund have yet to be worked out, Teresita Deles told reporters.

“(The fund) will be spent on housing, immediate livelihood and of course on health problems still lingering and whatever else is needed so they have a place to go home to,” Deles said.

“There is a lot of international support going to this area. Some of them (the donors) have already spoken to me.”

After four decades of armed conflict between the Filipino state and the Moro Muslims, the two parties agreed to sign an agreement that would end the conflict. However, the supreme court of the Philippine declared the agreement illegal on August 4, which caused the conflict to resume.

“Negotiated political settlement”

Malaysia has been facilitating negotiations with the MILF since 2001, and there is an international peace monitoring team on Mindanao.

“Negotiated political settlement is the only way to bring real closure to armed conflicts,” she said. “Clearly, the negotiations will happen.”

“We want to strengthen the teams and get other stakeholders involved, including lawmakers and local officials, and avoid the past mistakes,” she said.

The entire peace policy would be reviewed, she said, including the role of foreign mediators.

“We need to have clear terms of reference for the role of our foreign partners,” Deles said. “I have never seen such goodwill, but we’d like to know what’s the best way for these partners to help.”

Deles said she had informally conveyed the government’s offer to return to the negotiating table. At his inauguration on Wednesday, Aquino said he would seek a “just” settlement on Mindanao.

When Umar Israilov left the Eurospar supermarket on Leopoldauerstrasse in Vienna at around noon on Jan. 13, 2009, he must have realized his life was at stake. He immediately twisted up and hurled a full shopping bag into the face of a man who was lying in wait for him outside.

Just a few seconds later, and a few meters further, it was over. Two men with drawn pistols pursued him and fired on Israilov as he tried to run away. After being hit several times, he collapsed, but the two men continued firing their guns. One man even beat him with the butt of his pistol.
Israilov, a 27-year-old Russian citizen of Chechen origin and an applicant for asylum in Austria, died on the way to the hospital.

LUCKNOW: Darul Uloom Deoband, the self-appointed guardian for Indian Muslims, in a Talibanesque fatwa that reeked of tribal patriarchy, has decreed that it is “haram” and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman’s earnings. Clerics at the largest Sunni Muslim seminary after Cairo’s Al-Azhar said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited proximity of men and women in the workplace.

“It is unlawful (under the Sharia law) for Muslim women to work in the government or private sector where men and women work together and women have to talk with men frankly and without a veil,” said the fatwa issued by a bench of three clerics. The decree was issued over the weekend, but became public late on Monday, seminary sources said….

The fatwa, however, drew flak among other clerics.

“Men and women in Sharia are entitled to equal rights. If men follow the Sharia, there is no reason why women can’t work with them,” said Rasheed, the Naib Imam of Lucknow’s main Eidgah Mosque in Aishbagh.

Mufti Maulana Khalid Rasheed of Darul Ifta Firangi Meheli — another radical Islamic body which also issues fatwas — criticized the Deoband fatwa as a retrograde restriction on Muslim women.

Al Qaeda-linked militants in police uniforms set off bombs and fired at civilians on a strife-torn Philippine island in violence that left 15 people dead.

The gunmen targeted a government office and a church in Isabela city on Basilan island with two home-made bombs, in the latest show of force from the Abu Sayyaf network that is blamed for the worst attacks in the Philippines.

Isabela city mayor Cherry Akbar told reporters that 15 people were confirmed dead, including five militants who were apparently killed by one of their own bomb blasts.

Six civilians were also killed in the explosions, while three soldiers and one policeman were killed in gunbattles with the militants, Ms Akbar said.

At least 25 militants wearing police uniforms were involved in the attacks, according to the region’s military chief, Lieutenant General Ben Dolorfino.

They sprayed bullets at terrified civilians scrambling away to safety, and engaged in a gunbattle with security forces on the outskirts of Isabela that lasted for at least three hours, according to various military chiefs.

“We have to take control and assure the people that we are on top of the situation,” Sabban said as the fighting was ongoing.

“All we know right is that our marines right now are under fire.”

Isabela, an impoverished island of nearly 500,000 people, is part of the southern Philippines’ Mindanao region where the Abu Sayyaf and other Muslim rebel groups are fighting for an independent homeland.

Hundreds of US troops have been stationed on Mindanao since the end of 2001 to train and equip the Filipino military to combat the Abu Sayyaf….

To be precise, at least according to this AP report, he said that “a dictatorial cult is ruling Iran in the name of Islam.” So presumably he thinks that Islam actually teaches something other than what the mullahs represent and teach. In one swift move, the Court brushed aside fifteen of the eighteen expert-witnesses the defence had requested to be summoned.

Only Hans Jansen, Simon Admiraal and Wafa Sultan were allowed to be heard as expert-witnesses. Their testimony will be heard in a session behind closed doors. Apparently the truth about Islam must remain a secret.

Geert Wilders: “This Court is not interested in the truth. This Court doesn’t want me to have a fair trial. I can’t have any respect for this. This Court would not be out of place in a dictatorship”.

The Court also brushed aside the preliminary objections concerning its jurisdiction and the admissibility of the Public Prosecutor.

Breaking: “Unruly” Passengers Saudi Arabs Disrupt Northwest Flight 243

MyFoxDetroit.com - Sources tell Fox 2 that a flight from Amsterdam into Detroit Metropolitan Airport was held on the tarmac after landing because of unruly behavior by some of the passengers.

The source says four men from Saudi Arabai were saying something in Arabic that alarmed four on-board Federal Air Marshals. The Marshals speak Arabic.  A decision was made to stop the plane  on the tarmac away from the passenger terminal and remove the men from the plane.

This  comes less than a week after the Nigerian ‘Knickerbomber” pleaded not guilty to trying to blow up a Northwest flight from Amsterdam as it was preparing to land in Detroit on Christmas.

MANILA, Philippines–A 19-year-old Saudi Arabian man dressed as a pilot was arrested Tuesday after he illegally entered a restricted area in the main airport in the Philippines, an airport official said.

“He was able to elude our security by misrepresenting himself as a pilot of Saudia,” said airport general manager Alfonso Cusi, referring to the Saudi Arabian flag carrier….

The detained Saudi, identified by the local authorities as Hani Abdulelah Bukhari, told airport police he was there to meet his father, a retired Saudia pilot who later arrived on a flight from Saudi Arabia.

He was wearing a pilot’s uniform from Saudia Airlines when airport security personnel noticed him lining up at the immigration section of the passenger terminal, Cusi told ABS-CBN television.

The young man produced a card identifying him as a dependent of a retired Saudia employee, he said….

An airport report on the incident said Bukhari was enrolled at a local flying school. The school said however, that he was not a student although his two brothers were….

While Islamic advocacy groups like CAIR and MPAC complain about “profiling” of Muslims in airports, and egregious deceivers like Aziz Poonawalla whine about the perils of “Flying While Brown,” in an unrelated and entirely coincidental development, Muslims continue to be “unruly” and create “disturbances” on airplanes.

Here is one possible solution to treat this bad behavior:

The soldiers of profit Moe have caused this mess for all of us and for themselves. Whining over profiling and being singled out for  extra screening just shows the audacity of these loons. But even more so, it shows  their complete inability to accept any responsibility for the jihad, which they are obliged to wage against us.  ME Online

Now, these could be examples of jihadis trying to “strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of Allah” (Qur’an 8:60), which you can do in ways other than simply by murdering them. On the other hand, maybe it really is all just coincidence. Muhammad Abu Tahir, after all, was drunk — although he may have been trying to give himself some Dutch courage. In the same way that the 9/11 hijackers and Nidal Hasan went to strip clubs before their jihad attacks, so Muhammad Abu Tahir may have believed that all his sins would be outweighed by his act of jihad. Or maybe he had no jihadist intent at all. But one would think at least that if Islamic groups want to show that there is no need for profiling, they could at least advise their coreligionists to knock off the “unruly” behavior on airplanes.

Another jittery flight crew questioned the actions of a few Muslim passengers today, causing yet another flight to be delayed and police to question the four men.

Northwest Airlines flight 243 from Amsterdam to Detroit — the same route taken by a Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a plane Christmas Day — was met by police, after one or more of the men reportedly pulled a blanket over their head. When the plane landed at around 1:05 p.m., it was kept away from the gate for about 15 minutes. The men were then removed and questioned.

No arrests will be made in connection with this incident.

Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliott said that “four passengers did not comply with crew-member instruction. Out of caution, the crew requested that authorities meet the plane upon landing.” Northwest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta.

The Transportation Security Administration said it was “notified of unruly passengers” on the flight, interviewed the passengers and then released them….

The “unruly passengers” were from Saudi Arabia, home of 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers.

(CNN) — A 47-year-old Virginia man was charged Monday with interfering with a flight crew during a flight last week in which he allegedly became intoxicated and unruly, leading authorities to scramble fighter jets and the pilot to make an emergency landing.

The incident occurred Friday when Muhammad Abu Tahir, a Pakistani national and lawful permanent U.S. resident of Glen Allen, Virginia, was aboard AirTran Airways Flight 39 from Atlanta, Georgia, to San Francisco, California.

During the flight, a flight attendant served Tahir, seated in coach, three airplane-serving-sized bottles of wine, then refused to serve him more, according to a two-page affidavit filed Monday by the FBI.

He appealed to the senior flight attendant, who granted him a fourth, then a fifth bottle, both of which he downed quickly, it said.

Tahir then went to a bathroom in the rear of the plane and closed the door, opening it a few minutes later and placing his shoes and socks outside the door, then retreating back inside, the affidavit said.

“A short time later, Tahir again opened the lavatory door revealing that he was shaving with no shirt on,” it added.

When a flight attendant knocked on the door and encouraged him to leave the bathroom so others could use it, Tahir refused “and started yelling at the flight attendant that he was being disrespected,” it said.

Notified of the passenger’s behavior, the captain advised the senior flight attendant to enlist the help of a passenger to stand outside the lavatory in case help was needed, it said.

But Tahir continued yelling and refused to obey the crew, at one point grabbing the senior flight attendant by her arms and hands, releasing her only after a passenger interceded, the affidavit said.

By this time, a fire extinguisher had been carried to the rear of the plane for possible use against the man and a beverage cart was repositioned to contain Tahir, according to the affidavit .

While Tahir remained inside the lavatory, the pilot made an emergency landing in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where police officers took Tahir to the El Paso County Jail, where he remained Monday.

Tahir told the FBI that he felt he was being disrespected when the flight attendants denied his request for food, which was being served in business class, the affidavit said….
