Islamic Jihad put out an announcement saying that they refuse to consider a cease-fire from their rocket attacks.
Muslim Law professor Zyed Motala @ Howard University School of Law, is peeved:

A pivotal theme in current Islamic political discourse is a demand for justice, a key tenet of the Quran. A popular complaint in Islamic political argument is discrimination against Muslims in the west such as the ban of the veil in European countries, minarets in Switzerland or racial profiling in many western countries.

Unfortunately, there is a conspicuous lack of looking inwards to practices within Muslim countries. Muslims from all over the world have just completed the annual pilgrimage, the Hajj in Saudi Arabia. The Hajj represents a critical pillar of Islam and is supposed to represent a universal gathering of Muslims, which transcends race, ethnicity, color or any other distinction.

Muslims are supposed to meet in the sacred precincts surrounding the holy city of Mecca as equals wearing the same simple clothing meant to symbolize perfect brotherhood, where individuals or groups do not see themselves as separate entities and differences of lineage, tribe or race have no bearing. (More from Puff Ho)

Saudi Arabia: Fueling Religious Persecution and Extremism

by Nina Shea/Hudson New York

Last Sunday, a December 2009 cable that was cited by the New York Times but has not yet been posted by Wikileaks says that Saudi donors remain the chief financiers of Sunni militant groups such as Al Qaeda.

America’s top financial-counterterrorism official, Treasury Undersecretary Stuart Levey, believes there’s a strong link between education and support for terror. As he wrote in the Washington Post last June, to end support for such terror, among other steps, “we must focus on educational reform in key locations to ensure that intolerance has no place in curricula and textbooks. . . . [U]nless the next generation of children is taught to reject violent extremism, we will forever be faced with the challenge of disrupting the next group of terrorist facilitators and supporters.”

Saudi Arabia is one such “key location.” The kingdom is not just any country with problematic textbooks. As the controlling authority of the two holiest shrines of Islam, Saudi Arabia is able to disseminate its religious materials among the millions of Muslims making the hajj to Mecca each year. Such teachings can, in this context, make a great impression. In addition, Saudi textbooks are also posted on the Saudi Education Ministry’s website and are shipped and distributed free by a vast Sunni infrastructure established with Saudi oil wealth to many Muslim schools, mosques and libraries throughout the world. In his book The Looming Tower, Lawrence Wright asserts that while Saudis constitute only 1 percent of the world’s Muslims, they pay “90 per cent of the expenses of the entire faith, overriding other traditions of Islam.” Others estimate that, on an annual basis, Saudi Arabia spends three times as much in exporting its Wahhabi ideology as did the Soviets in propagating Communism during the height of the Cold War. From the Netherlands and Bosnia, to Algeria and Tunisia, to Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to Somalia and Nigeria, nationals of these countries have reported that over the past twenty to thirty years local Islamic traditions are being transformed and radicalized under intensifying Saudi influence. The late President of Indonesia Abdurrahman Wahid wrote that Wahhabism was making inroads even in his famously tolerant nation of Indonesia.

To understand why Jim Woolsey and other terrorism experts call Wahhabism as it spreads through the Islamic diaspora “kindling for Usama Bin Laden’s match,” it is important to know the content of Saudi textbooks. They teach, along with many other noxious lessons, that Jews and Christians are “enemies,” and they dogmatically instruct that that it is permissible, even obligatory, to kill various groups of “unbelievers” — apostates (which includes Muslim moderates who reject Saudi Wahhabi doctrine), polytheists (which can include Shias and Sufis, as well as Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists.), Jews, and adulterers. The texts also teach that the “punishment for homosexuality is death” and discusses that this can be done by immolation by fire, stoning or throwing the accused from a high place.

Under the Saudi Education Ministry’s method of rote learning, these teachings amount to indoctrination, starting in first grade and continuing through high school, where militant jihad on behalf of “truth” has for years been taught as a sacred duty.

The “lesson goals” of one of the text books is to have the children list the “reprehensible” qualities of Jewish people and another, that Jews are pigs and apes.

Reformist Muslims can also be labeled as “apostates,” and thus they can be killed with impunity. In the opening fatwa of a Saudi government booklet distributed to educate Muslim immigrants in 2005 by the Saudi embassy in the United States, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia (a cabinet level government post) responded to a question about a Muslim preacher in a European mosque who said “declaring Jews and Christians infidels is not allowed.” The Grand Mufti accused the unnamed European cleric of apostasy: “He who casts doubts about their infidelity leaves no doubt about his own infidelity.”

As Saudi analyst Ali Ahmed recently wrote in the Guardian: “The current textbooks do not spare most Muslims from the accusations of polytheism, deviance, hypocrisy, and outright apostasy. For example, the 12th grade book on ‘monotheism’ claims that many in the Muslim world community have returned to polytheism. …In the classical Takfiri (declaring others to be outside of religion’s bounds) style, the text allows for the killing of apostates and polytheists, and it does not take much to qualify as one or the other.”

The intellectual pioneer of takfiri doctrine is the medieval Islamic scholar Ibn Tamiyya. He is cited as a moral guide in the Saudi textbooks – including in the newly edited, heavily redacted texts used in the Islamic Saudi Academy, a school operated in Fairfax County, VA, by the Saudi embassy. Students of Saudi high school textbooks are instructed to consult his writings when they face vexing moral questions. West Point’s Center for Combating Terror found that Ibn Tamiyya’s are “by far the most popular texts for modern jihadis.”

Saudi foreign-affairs officials and ambassadors do not dispute the need for education reform. Their reactions, though, have alternated over the years between insisting that reforms had already been made and stalling for time by stating that the reforms would take several years more to complete, maybe banking on the hope that American attention would drift.

Four years ago, the Saudis gave a solemn and specific promise to the United States. Its terms were described in a letter from the U.S. assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs to Sen. Jon Kyl, then chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security: “In July of 2006, the Saudi Government confirmed to us its policy to undertake a program of textbook reform to eliminate all passages that disparage or promote hatred toward any religion or religious groups.” Furthermore, the State Department letter reported that this pledge would be fulfilled “in time for the start of the 2008 school year.”

Saudi Arabia has failed to keep its promise to the United States. One Wikileak cable from the US embassy reports that Saudi education reform seems “glacial.” In its newly released 2010 annual report on religious freedom, the State Department itself asserted, albeit with diplomatic understatement, with respect to Saudi Ministry of Education textbooks: “Despite government revisions to elementary and secondary education textbooks, they retained language intolerant of other religious traditions, especially Jewish, Christian, and Shi’a beliefs, including commands to hate infidels and kill apostates.” (emphasis added.)

Saudi government misrepresentations on its failure to reform national textbooks was in full display last month in the BBC Panorama’s expose of 40 Saudi part time schools in the UK, where it tried to deny that the schools were in any way connected to Riyadh. The television journalists investigated and found that in fact the Saudi Cultural Bureau, which is part of the embassy, did indeed have authority over the network To be clear, these 40 Saudi schools in the UK teach from the Saudi national curriculum, which was revealed on the show to include the lessons on killing apostates, polytheists and homosexuals, as well as on violent anti-Semitism.

Meanwhile, Saudi royals have stepped up their philanthropy to higher education around the world, for which they have garnered many encomiums and awards. Hardly a month goes by without a news report that one of the princes is endowing a new center of Islamic and Arabic studies, or a business or scientific department, at a foreign university. The king himself recently founded a new university for advanced science and technology inside Saudi Arabia.

These efforts have bought the royal family much good will, but they should not distract our political leaders from the central concern of the Saudi 1–12 religious curriculum. This is not the time for heaping unqualified praise on the aging monarch for promoting “knowledge-based education,” “extending the hand of friendship to people of other faiths,” promoting “principles of moderation, tolerance, and mutual respect,” and the like, (phrases with which our diplomatic statements on Saudi Arabia are replete).

The State Department needs to begin regular and detail reporting on the remaining objectionable and violent passages in Saudi government textbooks and to press in a sustained manner for the kingdom to keep its 2006 pledge to us regarding textbook reform. As USCIRF recommends, the administration should also lift the indefinite waiver of any action pursuant to the designation of Saudi Arabia as a “Country of Particular Concern” under the International Religious Freedom Act – the only “CPC” to receive an indefinite waiver.

In one of the Wikileaks cables written earlier this year on Saudi King Abdullah to Secretary Clinton, US Ambassador James Smith makes the following observation:

“Reflecting his Bedouin roots, he judges his counterparts on the basis of character, honesty, and trust. He expects commitments to be respected and sees actions, not words, as the true test of commitment….”

Bedouin or not, we should start demanding the same from him.

Delivered before the Religious Freedom Caucus of the US House of Representatives, December 1, 2010

Daren Briscoe, a Newsweek correspondent who was embedded with Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, has taken a job with the Obama administration, according to an email sent to a listserv of his classmates at the Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

The email, written by Time reporter and fellow Columbia grad Jay Newton-Small, said Briscoe would be serving as deputy associate director of public affairs for the Office of National Drug Control Policy as of Monday.

“Despite his multiple basketball games with our commander-in-chief, he always brought a skeptical eye to his work and in conversations about the candidate,” Newton-Small wrote the email.

Briscoe’s campaign reporting helped provide the basis for Newsweek’s book on the campaign, A Long Time Coming.

When the campaign was over, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham told the story of how Briscoe went silently into the Obama campaign bubble:

On the trail with Obama, Daren understood early on that, come what may, it was a historic campaign. “As Obama crisscrossed Iowa — the linchpin for his then fanciful-sounding ‘early state strategy’ – in December of 2007,” Daren says, “I found myself at an event, wondering what an all-white, elderly crowd of rural Iowa farmers would make of this skinny black guy – until I noticed how many faded pairs of overalls and worn straw hats already had OBAMA buttons pinned to them.”

Then, in March 2008, when clips of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright crying “God damn America” were playing endlessly, Daren wondered whether Obama’s candidacy would survive – until he watched Obama’s subtle speech on race in Philadelphia. Daren’s father, born and raised in the pre-civil-rights South, later told him: “That’s the first time I’ve ever heard anybody explain how I feel.” Daren’s dad is 69 years old.

Briscoe will work for Obama “drug czar” Gil Kerlikowske, who was sworn in on June 19.

The EoZ PCHR research team, tentatively titled the “haqq” team (Arabic for “truth’,) continues to unearth more and more so-called “civilians” from the PCHR list that are anything but.

Today’s civilian is #267 of the PCHR list of dead Gazans, Abdullah Talal Ibrahim Aal-Sane’. Intrepid researcher Suzanne found a picture of Mr. Aal-Sane’:

Known as “Abu Hamza,” Aal-Sane’ was a sniper for the Al Qassam Brigades.

Doesn’t he look like an innocent civilian to you?

(Kudos to Suzanne, who is methodically Googling the Arabic names of every victim and discovering facts like these.)

We are now up to 283 fake “civilians” from the PCHR list, and we are up to 62.5% (177/283, including ten that the PCHR listed) of all the “policemen” listed there being known members of the Al Qassam Brigades or the PRC.

Al Jazeera boss: Ibrahim Helal has been accused of sexism towards white British journalist Jo Burgin

A ‘sexist’ Arab boss at Al Jazeera television had the management skills of Saddam Hussein, a tribunal heard today.

Ibrahim Helal also tried to censor ‘anti-Islamic’ news stories such as the arrest of British teacher Gillian Gibbons in Sudan and the kidnap of BBC journalist Alan Johnston in Gaza, it was said.

Mr Helal is deputy managing director of the Arabic news channel’s English language service which is being sued for £1million by journalist Jo Burgin.

She is claiming sex, race and religious discrimination, saying she was sacked for being a white, British, Christian woman.

Yesterday Mr Helal, who flew in from the channel’s headquarters in Qatar for the hearing at Central London Employment Tribunal, was accused of sexism towards Miss Burgin, 49, who was hired in 2005 as the station’s head of planning.

Miss Burgin’s husband Steve Clark, who also worked there, told the tribunal Mr Helal was ‘the least capable and most dishonourable journalist I have ever encountered’.

Comparing him to the former Iraqi leader, he said: ‘His editorial style was non-existent. I would say he had the managerial skills of Saddam Hussein. He was an appalling manager. I believe that Mr Helal was not prepared to deal with a Western woman in a senior editorial position.’

He said the treatment of Miss Burgin – by ignoring her, shouting over her and rolling his eyes whenever she spoke – was designed to marginalise her.

Mr Clark, formerly head of news at Al Jazeera English, branded his former boss devoid of professional ethics and claimed he repeatedly tried to bury stories that were ‘anti-Arab’.

Sacked: Steve Clark and Jo Burgin arrive at the Employment Tribunal Offices in Kingsway, London, today. Ms Burgin is claiming sex, race and religious discrimination

These included a ban on broadcasting images of the BBC’s Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston wearing an explosive belt after he was taken hostage by militants.

Mr Clark said: ‘I said if we are the only international news organisation not to use this video it will be interpreted as a political decision. Mr Helal was enraged and tried to have me suspended.’

Ingrid Simler QC, representing Al Jazeera, suggested it was a legitimate difference of editorial opinion and that Mr Helal had simply not wanted to distress Mr Johnston’s family by showing the pictures.

But Mr Clark replied that Mr Helal had worked at Al Jazeera’s main Arabic language channel when it notoriously screened footage of hostages being held by fanatics in Iraq and Afghanistan, adding: ‘It’s a little rich of him to say he didn’t want to upset the family because he hasn’t shown that in the past.’

On another occasion Mr Helal issued an edict that there was to be no mention of Gillian Gibbons, the Liverpudlian primary schoolteacher accused of blasphemy by Sudanese authorities after she allowed children in her class to name a toy bear after the prophet Mohammed, the tribunal heard.

Mr Clark, a former news executive at ITN and NBC who was hired in 2004 to help set up Al Jazeera’s English language channel, said: ‘I didn’t believe Mr Helal possessed the standards of professional ethics demanded on a global news channel.

He harboured anti-Western sentiments – such attitudes go against the very basic tenets of journalistic integrity. In particular he had a great deal of difficulty in dealing professionally with women, and his attitude towards women was condescending.’

Mr Helal also tried to ban gay men from the screen and denounced the iconic picture of James Bond actress Ursula Andress in a bikini as ‘pornography’, the hearing was told.

Miss Burgin is able to sue in the UK because her contract of employment was with the station’s British arm.

Al Jazeera denies her claims and says Miss Burgin was dismissed because her work was of an unacceptable standard.

The hearing continues.

Gee, the hopes were so high, yet now it’s all coming unraveled.

Must be the after-effects of the neo-McCarthyite plot.

Apparently, only the Democrats take these people seriously.

Al-Jazeera’s troubled English language news channel is facing a “serious staffing crisis” after scores of journalists left or have not had contracts renewed amid claims of a revolt over working conditions.

Staff at the Doha-based 24-hour news channel – which only reached its first birthday in November – have toldMediaGuardian.co.uk of a series of issues including the removal of benefits and a lack of pay rises which have led many to resign or look to leave.

The staff unrest comes amid speculation that al-Jazeera English is set to relaunch in the second quarter of this year with new schedules and new studios in Gaza and Nairobi.

According to insiders, resignations have occurred across the board, including the director of human resources, the director of operations, producers, senior camera operators and editors.

One source said that the general belief among staff was that the English language rolling news service “cost so much to set up that they are now cutting costs at the expense of quality and quantity”.

There are also renewed reports of tensions between al-Jazeera’s Arabic language channel, which has been on air since 1996, and the more recently launched English outlet.

Sources have added that executives on the main Arabic al-Jazeera network are trying to exert more control over the English language outlet, which is mainly staffed by western journalists.

One source said the al-Jazeera editor-in-chief, Ibrahim Hilal, was pushing for the English channel to take a more Islamic slant, quoting the example of the recent furore surrounding British teacher Gillian Gibbons who was arrested in Sudan for allowing her class to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

“He [Hilal] sent an email banning the story from being run on al-Jazeera English because it would upset Muslims,” the source added. “It was only covered when there were riots in Sudan.”

Shocking, isn’t it, that Jihad TV would want an Islamist slant?

Never saw that coming.

Al-Jazeera is also embroiled in two employment disputes, including one in London with the former al-Jazeera English head of planning, Jo Burgin, who is claiming sex, race and religious discrimination.

Sources have said that the Washington-based former financial controller Clive Brady is also taking legal action in the US after being dismissed.

Another source described the working environment at al-Jazeera English as “hateful”.

“I have never worked anywhere where morale was so low,” one former staff member said. “Some people have worked very hard to produce a channel but there is no recognition whatsoever.”

These people pimp themselves out to a network that’s an avowed enemy of the West and they’re surprised they’re treated like this?

Idiots.

We’ll leave you with this laugher.

In a statement, he said: “Al-Jazeera’s mission and vision has always been based on the values of human dignity, equality, and diversity.

“This applies not only to our coverage but also to our organisation. The commitment to diversity is the reason we have over 2,500 staff and journalists from over 40 different nationalities and from many different faiths working across all parts of the world.

“In a global organisation such as ours all employee grievances have a channel for resolution and we have an open door policy to resolve all issues.
