In Norway, the Oslo-based Imam Syed Farasat Ali Bukhari told the Norwegian state television channel NRK that any Muslim not fasting during Ramadan should be beheaded. He made the comments shortly after asking the government for permission to open a private Islamic school for 200 pupils in the Ammerud neighbourhood of Oslo. The government subsequently denied his request.

Abdul Jalal, the president of the Islamic Society of Darra, admits there are many misconceptions about Islam.

If we talk about it, we  will understand:

Why Did President Jefferson Read the Quran?

…The new President did not have a CIA to tell him what the enemy was like. He found that out by reading the Quran he had bought for his own edification. In other words, Jefferson’s copy of the Quran helped him understand the nature and mentality of the Muslim enemy. He was wise enough to do his own research long before the United States government had any intelligence apparatus.

And thanks to Jefferson, a new U.S. Navy was created to fight and win this war.

The American navy, fed up with the constant depredations by Muslim corsairs, who were not so much pirates as Muslims who were encouraged to prey on Christian shipping, and who at times even recorded the areas of the Mediterranean where they planned to go in search of Christian prey, seized a ship that belonged to those who were ruled by the Bey of Tunis. And the Bey of Tunis wanted that ship back. He sent to Washington, for six months, a temporary envoy, one Sidi Soliman Mellimelli, who was not, pace Obama, “the first Muslim ambassador to the United States,” but, rather, a temporary envoy.

So Obama and the Muslims in the white house are celebrating an ambassador who called himself an envoy but was actually a blackmail/ransom  collecions agent.

And his name was Seedy. There can be nohing seedier than using Jefferson’s copy of the Ko-Ran used by Rep. Keith Ellisson D-Minnesota to be inducted into Congress by swearing a false oath to the Constitution.

Jefferson was thinking Know thine enemy back then. But this axiom has fallen from currency since the ex-hippies and the impostor took over the nation.

So far the Premier John Brumby has refused to weigh into the debate about the event, saying he will wait to see the VCAT ruling before making any comment.

VCAT has approved a ban on uncovered shoulders and thighs for a community event to be held at the Dandenong Oasis, a municipal pool.

“Participants aged 10 and over must ensure their bodies are covered from waist to knee and the entire torso extending to the upper arms,” a request by Dandenong City Council and the YMCA states in an exemption application to the Equal Opportunities Act.

“Participants must not wear transparent clothing.”

This issue has also sparked a huge community debate, with well over 700 people commenting on heraldsun.com.au this morning.

Many readers feel the administrative ruling has gone too far to appease minority interests, and even senior Islamic figures have raised concerns about the precedent.

The request has been approved by VCAT and applies to a family event to be held at the pool next August.

“The applicant intends this to be an event where people of all races and religions and ages may attend, use the Centre’s facilities and socialise together,” VCAT notes.

“The holy month of Ramadan has a particular focus on families and the applicant wishes to encourage families to attend and socialise together with others.

“The minimum dress requirements are set having regard to the sensitivities of Muslims who wish to participate in the event.”

The ban on skimpy clothes will apply between 6.15 and 8.15pm on August 21 next year, a time when the pool is closed to the public and normally used by a Muslim women’s swimming group.

The ban was yesterday compared by the Human Rights Commissioner Helen Szoke to a ban on thongs in a pub.

“Matters such as this are not easy to resolve and require a balance to be achieved between competing rights and obligations,” she said.

“Dress codes are not uncommon: eg singlets, jeans, thongs etc in pubs/hotels.”

Sherene Hassan, vice-president of the Islamic Society of Victoria, said she didn’t support the dress restrictions.

“My preference would be that no dress code is stipulated,” Ms Hassan said.

But Liberty Victoria said the ban was reasonable because the event was to be held out of hours.

A spokeswoman for the City of Greater Dandenong said the ban would help Muslims feel part of the community.

RABAT, Morocco — Death threats, police interrogations and a media firestorm aren’t typical upshots of a decision to enjoy an afternoon picnic.

But that’s just what happened after a circle of Moroccan activists tried meeting for an outdoor lunch during Ramadan last month.

The activists planned the meal to protest a national law that punishes those who break the Islamic holy month’s mandatory daytime fast. Their stated aim was to spur debate on religious freedom.

The resulting brouhaha has observers debating the sway fundamentalists hold in a country that  has a 98 percent Muslim majority and which, despite travel advertisements that make its society appear modern and secular, is actually quite traditional.

“Moroccan society is particularly hard on people who don’t observe Ramadan,” said Zineb El Rhazoui, 27, a Casablanca journalist who helped organize the protest. “If people see you eating in the street, they attack you. This needs to be stopped.”

Billing themselves as the Alternative Movement for Individual Liberty, the group came together in a manner befitting one of the Arab world’s more web-savvy countries — on Facebook. The French acronym for the group’s name, MALI, is also fitting. In Moroccan Arabic “mali” translates roughly to “what do you blame me for?” or “what’s wrong with me?”

If you ask Moroccan authorities, the answer seems to be: plenty.

The picnickers planned to meet on Sept. 13 halfway between Casablanca and the capital city of Rabat — a compromise between residents of the country’s financial and administrative hubs.

But as the handful of snack-toting youths descended onto a train platform near the appointed spot, they were immediately accosted by a crowd of police officers and several journalists who, it seems, also kept tabs on Facebook.

As cameras whirred, witnesses said scores of uniformed and plainclothes cops detained the activists before even one sandwich was munched. Ibtissam Lachgar, 34, a psychiatrist who attended the protest from Rabat recalled, “It was 100 police officers against 10 sandwiches, truly.”

The following day, the state-controlled wire service, MAP, announced that police had “thwarted” an illegal attempt to break the Ramadan fast, pledging that the “promoters of this demonstration, for trying to incite a violation of the fast in public, will be prosecuted under existing law.”

Partisan newspapers ran photos of the protesters alongside denunciations from conservative politicians. The protesters, interrogated by authorities over the course of several days and dubbed “de-jeuners” or “fast-breakers” in the press, said they received emailed death threats from Islamists.

“I got dozens and dozens of threats and insults, people saying unbelievable things,” El Rhazoui said. “I’m going to be careful, but I refuse to let these people scare me.”

One message, from a sender named Tarik, said El Rhazoui deserved to be put to death before the eyes of the whole Muslim world. Another, named Houcine, suggested that since El Rhazoui was willing to break her fast in public, perhaps she would consent to sex with the sender in public, too. “Bitch,” the message said, “write me back.”

The activist who administrated MALI’s Facebook group, Omar Radi, said some of the threats he received became quite specific. “‘We’re going to cut off your head,’ things like that,” he recalled.

Morocco’s premier liberal news weekly, TelQuel, published an editorial calling the fierce reaction a sign Morocco has lost its culture of tolerance. “In one generation our country has radically transformed,” it said. “It’s scary.”

But even some critics of the crackdown said observers shouldn’t read too much into a backlash they say stems less from theological fervor than a cultural insistence on keeping the fast.

“Ramadan is something unique here,” Khadija Ryadi, president of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights, which has called on the government to repeal the fasting law. “The reaction to the protest was more cultural than religious.”

Whether the picnickers will face prosecution remains to be seen, said their lawyer, Abderrahim Jamai. He said authorities initially intimated the protesters would be slapped with Article 222 of the Moroccan Penal Code, which forbids Muslims from eating between sunrise and sunset during the holy month.

But the fact picnickers were intercepted pre- rather than post-nosh may help explain why none of them have been formally charged with a crime, Jamai said.

“They had a debate and they expressed ideas,” he said. “But they didn’t complete the act.”

Hmmm, why would that be?  Doesn’t our resident troll Solkar keep telling us that we got it all wrong and that we are ‘radicals & extremists’ while his country is full of tolerance and moderation?

A Moroccan man campaigning to change the law banning eating in public during the Muslim Ramadan fast says he has received 100 death threats this week.

Radi Omar denied that his group was anti-Islam. “We are in favour of individual freedom,” he told the BBC.

Six of his colleagues are in custody after planning to eat in public last Sunday and he demanded their release.

Mr Omar said they were being well treated but he assumed they were not being fed during the fasting hours.

The group, known as the Alternative Movement for Individual Freedoms (Mali), has more than 1,200 members on its Facebook site.

They planned a public defiance of the law at the train station in Mohammedia near Casablanca last Sunday but were dispersed by the police.

The protesters were prevented from eating and so should not have been detained, Mr Omar said, adding that they have not been charged.

Under Moroccan law, eating in public during the hours of daylight, when Muslims are supposed to observe a fast, can lead to a fine and up to six months in prison.

In recent years many Western nations have done their best to help enforce the legal requirements of shari’a when pressured by their Muslim minorities. The pandering has even reached the point where, during Ramadan, non-Muslims in public employment are sometimes forbidden to eat their lunch where Muslims can see them.

Now, in one of the bitter ironies of our time, a group of courageous Moroccans is risking arrest and punishment for asserting the right to eat in public.

While we are rushing pell-mell to surrender our civil liberties, people in Morocco are struggling to claim theirs for the first time.

Ramadan: Moroccans Attempting to Break Fast Reported

(ANSAmed) — RABAT, SEPTEMBER 15 — Six people have been reported to the legal authorities for attempting to publicly break their Ramadan fast in Mohammedia (80km south of Rabat).

The group said that they are part of the “Alternative movement for the defence of individual liberties”, unheard of until now, but which includes Zineb Elghzaoui, a journalist for the Journal Hebdomadaire, as one of their members.

The demonstrators, who were blocked by police, were supposed to break their Ramadan fast “to protest against a law punishing non-observance during the month of Ramadan”. It is the first time in Morocco that a group of people publicly demanded the right not to fast.

In a statement issued by press agency MAP, the Ulema Council of Mohammedia denounced “this loathsome act that challenges God and the prophet’s teachings: a public attack of this nature on religion cannot be tolerated”. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are called to abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual relations from dusk until dawn.

Today the London Muslim Centre of the East London Mosque hosted another radical event: “Ramadan – The Month Of Conquest”. It was organised by a group called Ummah Voice.

Not that this has anything to do with Islam or jihad, mind you. Just wondering what they mean with “month of conquest”- any idea, Solkhar?

One of the speakers, Haitham al Haddad, an Islamist of Palestinian origin who grew up in Saudi Arabia and studied sharia at Omdurman University in Khartoum, Sudan, will be familiar to readers of this blog.

Here he is in the midst of a speech hailing the “victory” of Hamas in the Gaza war, saying that he wants the state of Israel to be annihilated. He also offers some utterly bizarre ideas about Jews uncovering Jesuit conspiracies.

Another speaker is Shakeel Begg, the imam of the Lewisham and Kent Islamic Centre and the Islamic chaplain at Goldsmiths. He was born in Kenya and grew up in London. He is a graduate of the Islamic University of Medina in Saudi Arabia.

According to a report in The Times, he too supports terrorist attacks on Israel:

Shakeel Begg, another radical cleric, recently urged students at Kingston University, southwest London, to wage jihad in Palestine. In a tape-recorded speech obtained by The Sunday Times, Begg, who is a Muslim chaplain at Goldsmiths College, part of London University, said: “You want to make jihad? Very good… Take some money and go to Palestine and fight, fight the terrorists, fight the Zionists.

Earlier this year, at another seminar at the London Muslim Centre titled “Heroes of Islam”, Begg chose to celebrate Aafia Siddiqi. She has been accused of attempting to murder American soldiers and officials in Afghanistan. Here he is championing her again (at 8:35 in) at a rally staged by Cage Prisoners, Moazzam Begg’s outfit.

Shakeel Begg also works with the Muslim Prisoner Support Group, a charity which has had two terrorists as trustees.

The police are one of his bugbears. He tells Muslims to see the police as the devil, at war with Islam. Even giving a speech to police officers is a betrayal of Allah.

It is with much sadness that I read Tawfique Chowdhury’s speech to the anti-terrorism officers in Wales, which he brazenly posted on an Islamic blog. I was deeply shocked and appalled by his enthusiasm for collaboration with a body that has failed its own war against Islam and the Muslims at home and abroad. It is deplorable for a graduate from the prestigious Islamic University of the Prophet’s city – the first Islamic State – where the subject of ‘Aqida is emphasised the most, to declare himself an ally of the West against Islam, not even by choice, but naturally. It is ridiculously outrageous for a Muslim speaker to lure the anti-terrorism officers into using him and other religious leaders against the Muslim community. This is not to say that we should not work to prevent unlawful violence. In fact, many have been at the forefront of this work, without signing a deal with the devil, or joining any sort of alliance, be it natural or otherwise, with the brutal, cunning and oppressive anti-terrorism workforce.

In light of this, I urge Tawfique Chowdhury to publicly and unequivocally retract his irresponsible and reckless speech, in order to save himself and his institute from disrepute. The failure in doing so will only reaffirm the public sentiment in the UK that he has clearly taken sides with the enemies of Islam and the Muslims. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind the scholars, preachers and Imams that their silence is consent. Tawfique Chowdhury is not the first to fall into disrepute and controversy, and he certainly would not be the last, unless and until they fulfil, and not betray their covenant with Allah, like those of whom Allah makes mention in His Book: “(And remember) when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought.”

In July this kind of divisive and spiteful message was pushed at a seminar at the Lewisham centre titled Al Munafiqeen [“the hypocrites”] – The Enemies Within. Begg was one of the speakers. The event was advertised on Islamic websites, including the site of the Muslim Council of Britain, this way:

A seminar discussion pressing issues facing the Muslim community such as the sinful acts of spying, informing and betraying other Muslims; the evil call to abandon ones faith through Secularism; and the traits of the hypocrites. This seminar is part of ‘The Muslim Nation – Rights and Obligations’ seminar tour.

Amazingly, no, scratch that, this is the UK we’re talking about, entirely predictably Begg is a member (pdf) of the Lewisham Community Police Consultative Group. He has also spoken at an Amnesty International event.

The third speaker at today’s event is Abu Talha of the Al Ansar Islamic Education Centre in Goodmayes, Essex. He is another graduate of the Islamic University of Medina. Here he is pouring scorn on the enemy – Muslims he calls “modernists”, such as Shiraz Maher; the Quilliam Foundation leaders, who are actually “not Muslims”; Usama Hasan; and even Tariq Ramadan.
