No choice but to shoot the armed robbers, police say (Daily Telegraph)

SENIOR police yesterday defended the shooting of two would-be robbers, saying officers had “no choice” but to open fire despite having shadowed the men for hours.

Ali Antoni El Hafiane, 19, of Condell Park, was killed and his alleged accomplice was injured when shot by two police officers in the beer garden of Condell Park’s High Flyer Hotel on Monday.

Just seconds earlier, the balaclava-clad men, one allegedly wielding a machete, had been confronted by an undercover officer inside the pub.

Five shots were discharged by at least two officers and ” … in my opinion, the officers had no choice other than to act in the way that they did,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Geoff Beresford said.

“In my opinion, it was an extremely brave act. They were confronted with a life-threatening situation and they did everything they could to protect members or patrons of the hotel and themselves.”

Flashback: Paris Riots

Police said at least one other man was waiting in a black Toyota Yaris in front of the hotel, but he drove off when the shots were fired, colliding with a police car.

Police raided a Condell Park home yesterday, but the man has not been arrested.

Mr Beresford said the men were being tracked throughout Monday afternoon by five Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives investigating a string of robberies in Sydney’s southwest.

The officers did not know of the robbery plot until they pulled up outside the High Flyer Hotel about 8.30pm.

Mr Beresford said events “escalated unexpectedly” and very quickly. One of the plainclothes officers ran inside the hotel to warn patrons.

El Hafiane’s mother Mary said her son, who was studying carpentry “on and off” at TAFE, didn’t have a history of criminal activity but admitted she didn’t know the circles he moved in.

“He’s just a kid, running around being crazy and the next thing we know he’s caught up in this,” Mrs El Hafiane said

“We got told through the grapevine. It’s all just gossip at the moment and things people have heard on TV.”

The devastated mother of four boys said police still hadn’t contacted her at lunchtime yesterday.

She said she waited two hours at Bankstown Police Station on Monday night, but was ignored by police.

Mr Beresford said senior homicide and Bankstown detectives told the boy’s father Mohammed of the shooting at 3.30am yesterday, after he attended the police station.

The second man was in a stable condition in Liverpool Hospital yesterday.

A police critical incident investigation team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

THE stage appeared set for two opposed cultures to clash in Sydney’s ethnically mixed working-class suburb of Lidcombe yesterday.

But if any outright antagonism had been going to happen between the Australian Protectionist Party and Hizb ut-Tahrir, police were determined not to allow it, keeping the groups at a distance from one another.

The APP met in a small park to express their need to “protect” the Australian way of life.

Around the corner from Australian flag-waving protesters, Muslims from around Sydney and overseas gathered in a local conference hall to discuss the “Struggle For Islam in the West”, with the Hizb ut-Tahrir.

Conflict between the APP and HT amounted to an exchange of words, anti-Islam chants and the occasional drive-by of young Muslim men yelling obscenities from their car at the APP protesters.

One passer-by, a young Muslim man, yelled at the APP group, “You people have absolutely no idea”, sparking a fiery exchange of accusations and finger-pointing.

“Infidels ‘r’ us!” read one APP placard, as members marched past the conference centre.

After regrouping in the park around the corner, the APP contingent mustered for another lap of the town centre and yelled “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Islam must go”and “No sharia law”.

Nick Folkes, the Sydney organiser for the APP, believes that the HT should be banned in Australia and thinks that practising sharia law should be illegal in Australia.

“Sharia law is an archaic legal system that treats woman as second-class citizens,” he said.

“We’re not asking them to change their skin colour or religion. But if they come here, they must reject sharia law.”

Sarah Ismail, a 26-year-old youth worker from the United Muslims of Australia in Lakemba, in Sydney’s west, said she was at the conference to show support for Muslim women to wear the hijab in public.

“I want people to know that we’re not forced to cover; it is completely our choice,” she said.

Ms Ismail said she has noticed growing racism in Australia towards Muslims, and says that people who protest against the Muslim way of life do not truly understand Islam.

“People yell, go back to your own country, even though I was born here,” she said. “All we’re trying to do is live a peaceful life.”

On the steps of Sydney Town Hall in the wet dusk of last Tuesday, the former mufti of Australia, Sheikh Taj el-Din al Hilaly, raised his arms and asked for silence as the crowd chanted anti-Israel slogans and waved the flags of Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine and the Socialist Alliance.

”Israel is a terrorist state. Yes?”

The crowd cheered. A series of chants drowned out his next sentence, which ended with the words, ”a clear message to the Israeli government.”

”Listen!” cried Hilaly, and the crowd grew silent.

He then lifted a Turkish flag and said, ”Turkey is coming!”

More Cheers. A section of the crowd, young men, broke into a chant of ”Allahu akbar!”

Hilaly continued: ”Turkey is coming. And Iran is ready!”

This was greeted with more cheers.

Iran is ready? For what? If you were to ask Hilaly, his record suggests you would receive disingenuous piffle of the type he has been offering for years whenever questioned about his war-mongering, especially the comments he has made in Arabic when he thought he would not be scrutinised in the wider society.

For this you can thank Paul Keating and his government and the NSW Labor machine, for overriding the advice of the Australian intelligence community that Hilaly be deported. He was too useful to Labor.

Hilaly’s latest message is clear. Turkey has turned against Israel. And Iran is ready, through its military and its foreign proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, to wage war against Israel. It has sent thousands of rockets to Lebanon and tried to do the same in Gaza, and is prepared to confront and destroy the Zionist entity, with Hilaly and his followers cheering them on.

Sharing the stage outside the Town Hall was Paul McAleer, the Sydney branch secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia. He chose his words carefully: ”This flotilla [confronting Israel's military blockade of Gaza] was hijacked by state-sanctioned murderers, who carry out their orders with deadly precision.”

State-sanctioned murderers who act with deadly precision. Sounds like Nazis.

The irony in McAleer’s comments was elements of the union now known as the MUA functioned for decades as a criminal organisation, practising system-wide blackmail, extortion, intimidation, pilfering and featherbedding on the wharves. During World War II, the wharfies’ union, controlled by the communists, undermined Australia’s war effort. After the war, when dock operators began to introduce mechanisation on the wharves, union leaders pushed forklift trucks into the harbour.

When the Howard government and Chris Corrigan broke the MUA’s stronghold on the ports 12 years ago, the union again used violence and intimidation. After the MUA lost the strike, the ports doubled their productivity. This is the moral authority on which the MUA stands.

Next on the Town Hall steps was a Greens NSW MP, Lee Rhiannon. She condemned Israel’s ”crime against humanity”. Rhiannon is the embodiment of the common cause the hard left has made with the hard right of Islamic militancy. It is an interesting alliance. After the first modern Islamic revolution, in Iran, the new regime wiped out the communists, whose activists on university campuses had helped bring down the shah. Within its first two years, the Islamic regime had executed thousands of communists, student leaders and feminists.

Despite this warning, the hard left and Islamic militancy continue to find common cause because of a shared and defining antipathy to Western capitalism and Zionism.

Where does the Australian Human Rights Commission stand on matters such as calls to religious war made in Australia? It has nothing to say. It prefers softer targets. Earlier on the day of the Town Hall demonstration, the Race Discrimination Commissioner, Graeme Innes, told the Herald he thought it was time for racial profiling of crimes. Not racial profiling of perpetrators, of course, just victims. ”Racial profiling perpetrators is little more than a guess which often reinforces incorrect stereotypes,” he said.

This is typical of the patronising hypocrisy permeating the human rights industry. Since when did identifying the ethnicity of people convicted of a crime ever involve guesswork? And if racial stereotypes are unfair, then racial profiling of both crime victims and perpetrators would exculpate any stereotyped group. If, however, racial profiling confirmed an ethnic group was disproportionately involved in crime, then it would not be an ”incorrect stereotype” but a truth.

Yet even the selective suggestion by the Race Discrimination Commissioner was too much for the president of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, Stepan Kerkyasharian, an inveterate ideologue on matters of presumed prejudice. In a letter to theHerald, Kerkyasharian wrote having police asking victims about their ethnic origin was ”dangerous”.

Why? ”Publicity about the ethnicity of a victim,” he wrote, ”when there is no suggestion of a racial motive, could lead to copy-cat attacks.” This is an argument made out of thin air. It is predicated entirely on the notion Australian society is seething with prejudice and in no way should crime and ethnicity be a subject fit for public consumption or transparency.

This is the bedrock belief of the human rights industry. Society is prejudiced and needs the civilising buffer of a large human rights machinery, and a human rights charter, policed and interpreted by the human rights industry, all funded by the taxpayer.

Just don’t ask too much about the most basic human right – freedom from violence. Don’t ask about who is populating our prisons, our criminal justice systems and the organisations on the published watch lists of ASIO. Because we can’t handle that sort of truth.

Auburn Council, in Sydney’s west, approved yet another giant mosque (there is already one monstrosity called Gallipoli Mosque in Auburn) to be built on a site occupied by a historical Art Deco fire station on Harrow Road.

And so it comes as no surprise that the non-Muslim residents are trying to stop the construction as they they believe it will become a headquarters for the strict Wahhabi sect of Islam in Sydney. (reference)

Additionally the Muslim buyers of the property do not care that the Fire Station, listed as a Australian heritage building, will be destroyed in the process.

The purpose of the Omar Mosque leadership in acquiring the property was to demolish the Old Auburn Fire Station building, consolidate the site with their three other adjacent properties and build over the new site a grand mosque, capable of accommodating a thousand worshippers at a time.

The new mosque is proposed to have 134 car parking spaces underground in a location that is zoned residential. The DA applicants knew at the time they bought the property that it was subject to heritage protection under the Auburn LEP. They are the same people who a few years earlier built the Al Faisal Islamic School, which is only one hundred metres further down the road from the site. But despite this knowledge of the laws in NSW and their ready access to legal and town planning expertise, which might have motivated them to seek another site, they chose instead to pursue a campaign to have its heritage protection removed by Auburn City Council.

Historical Fire Station at 47 Harrow Road, Auburn

The leaders of the Omar Mosque also probably knew at the time they bought the old fire station site that the Victorian Italianate terrace style cottage next to their existing mosque, formerly used since 1909 as Pegler’s Bakery at 43 Harrow Road, is also of high heritage significance, although not yet on the heritage schedule. Both properties will be demolished to make way for the proposed grand mosque, the main structure of which will stand on the highest hill in Auburn over three stories tall, topped at each of its four corners with a small minaret and a large central dome bearing an Islamic crescent moon. At the apex of the crescent moon, as is now proposed by the applicant, the structure will be close to the height of a five storey building.   (source)

Helen Grigoriou comforts her son Antonios who was allegedly beaten by Muslim students at his school.

A SYDNEY couple has withdrawn their two children from a public primary school, claiming their 11-year-old son was bullied by Muslim students because he ate a salami sandwich during Ramadan.

Andrew Grigoriou said yesterday he complained to the school and to police after his son Antonios was chased and later assaulted by Muslim students after a confrontation over the contents of his lunch, The Daily Telegraphreports.

Antonios, a Year 5 student of Greek-Australian background at Punchbowl Public School in Sydney’s southwest, said he and a friend had to be locked inside the library for an hour after being chased by a group of Muslim boys offended by his choice of food while they were fasting.

The Grigoriou family said the following exchange took place:

Muslim student to Antonios: “Why are you eating ham, it’s Ramadan?”

Antonios: “My mum packed this for lunch today.”

Muslim student: “Don’t eat that. How can you eat pig, it’s disgusting.”

During the confrontation a Muslim boy allegedly accused Antonios of saying: “F— the Muslims” but Antonios denied swearing.

Mr Grigoriou said he removed his son and a younger child from the school on Tuesday after the boy was punched in the eye and kicked in the legs by a Muslim student.

“It has broken my heart to see this happening to my boy,” he said. Antonios, who wrote about his experiences in words and drawings, still has nightmares.

The Department of Education and Training said it had a zero tolerance policy towards racism.

“Claims of bullying or racial intolerance are taken very seriously and looked into,” a spokeswoman said. “The School Education Director is looking into the matter and called the father concerned.

“As a result … the school will work with all families and students involved to ensure that the values promoted by Punchbowl Public School and the department are understood and supported.”

After the salami sandwich incident a student described as “the ringleader of the group” was suspended from the school. The department said that the school had “ongoing cultural and interfaith awareness programs to improve understanding among students of events like Ramadan and Christmas”.

Other parents also complained to The Daily Telegraph about bullying at the school and claimed victims received too little protection.

One said her 12-year-old son was scared to open his lunch box at school because he was harassed about what is in it. “He has been bullied from day one … about being a Christian and about the hot salami in his lunch,” she said.

“My boy has a Greek background … the bullying is extreme.

“He has been called a fat pig and hit on the back with a stick.”

Another mother said her young son refused to go on school excursions for fear he would be bashed.

In case people were wondering if Sydney had ‘gone quiet’ and there would be no more Islamic style raids, be assured it is business as usual. The Middle Eastern Squad were doing their duty and went to check on caches of arms in the predominantly Muslim populated Sydney suburb of Auburn last night [8/9/09]. Naturally they found an assortment of guns and drugs in the four homes they searched on Cumberland Road Auburn. However, one the residents of the houses did not like the arm of the law being extended to his ‘lifestyle choice’ and punched a police officer in the face. Then the Middle Eastern residents of the houses called on their Middle Eastern mates to come in large numbers to the street and so too did the police call on large numbers. Huge crowds gathered and there was a ‘more than Mexican’ standoff with the crowds of Middle Eastern citizens facing down members of the police.

Even the Australian is trying to play down the seriousness of this challenge to the authority of the police by suggesting that good sense prevailed in the end:

A police spokeswoman estimated the crowd at about 150 people but said there was no violence. “There was no riot, it was just a large number of people gathering,” she said. Additional resources were dispatched, including officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad, and the PolAir helicopter. Police managed to disperse the crowd without making any arrests. (source)

A Sydney bus company has apologised to one of its customers after the driver argued with a Muslim woman over her right to wear a niqab, or veil.

Hillsbus now says its driver behaved unacceptably when he told Khadijah Ouararhni-Grech to ‘take off her mask’.

The company says its actions were born out of ignorance and not malice, but it has refused to speak publicly about the incident.

The New South Wales Government says it should serve as a clear warning to private bus operators that they need to lift their standards.

“I was approached by the bus driver who stood up from his chair and said ‘right, you can’t get on this bus with that mask on; you have to show your face and take that mask off’,” Ms Ouararhni-Grech said.

She says she told the driver it was discrimination but he still argued with her.

“I said to him, ‘what’s it to you what I wear? And what’s the difference between me wearing this and anyone else wearing like a swine-flu mask or wearing what they choose to wear?’ No-one tells me how to dress in the morning.”

After a few minutes the driver relented, telling Ms Ouararhni-Grech that it was only because she was a woman.

“It’s almost being like raped of your culture. It’s like something has been taken away from you. You feel very victimised – you can’t help to feel that; it’s a natural, human natured feeling,” she said. (its not her culture: she is Maltese born Aurstralian. Its Islam that’s doing this to her. Delayed apology

Hillsbus received a complaint that afternoon from Mrs Ouararhni-Grech but didn’t contact her again until a Sydney newspaper publicised what had happened a few days later.

They then arranged for the bus driver to apologise this week over the phone.

“They’ve tried to pacify me. I don’t even think that my four-year-old daughter would accept that,” she said.

The bus company was asked by PM to do an interview explaining what they’ve learnt from this case but declined the offer.

Hillsbus says it has issued a public apology in the form of a statement issued to journalists who ask for comment.

And a spokeswoman says speaking on the radio would only cause hurt to Ms Ouararhni-Grech.

“If that was true, then what am I doing here?,” Ms Ouararhni-Grech said.

“It has upset me to the point where I feel the need to stop this counter-terrorism as an excuse of racism. I feel the need to protest for people’s rights.”

Eagerly aiding and abetting the spread of Islam in Australia:

New South Wales Transport Minister David Campbell is disappointed Hillsbus isn’t prepared to speak publicly.

“I share her upset. I wasn’t there and it didn’t impact on me personally but I want to live in a society where people’s individual religious background is welcome and I think, broadly, people in Sydney want to do that as well,” he said.

“All of the private bus operators should lift their game in terms of their passenger service and in terms of their preparedness to explain to their passengers and to explain to the taxpayers who subsidise their bus routes, the actions of their businesses.”

Breaking down resistance to the cult:

Ms Ouararhni-Grech says growing up as a Catholic before converting to Islam has given her a valuable insight into discrimination.

“I understood what it was like to be a Muslim and I’d go to the shop and it was horrendous, you get this look from the people who knew you before and you’d never seen them in that way and then they go, ‘oh my gosh, look what she’s wearing’,” she said.

But according to the man who chairs the state’s Community Relations Commission, Ms Ouararhni-Grech’s treatment is becoming less common.

Stepan Kerkasharian says non-Muslim Australians have become more accepting.

“I think by and large there’s a broad acceptance nowadays and it is not unusual for anyone in Sydney to walk into a restaurant or to walk into a supermarket into a Woolworths store, a Coles store, into a bank and see someone working there who is wearing the hijab,” he said.

“It’s becoming part and parcel of scenery in Australia.”

Ms Ouararhni-Grech says she would like to go to Hillsbus and speak to all the staff there about what it’s like to feel discriminated against.

THE State Government will buy back the site of the proposed Islamic school in Bass Hill or “it will be acquired by compulsory acquisition”.

State MP for Bankstown Tony Stewart has announced that he has received advice from the Department of Education indicating a proposal to build a special school for students with a disability at the Johnston Road site adjoining Bass High School.
“I am advised that if the College is unwilling to dispose of the land, it will be acquired by compulsory acquisition,” Mr Stewart said.
Al Amanah College purchased the land from the Department in 2006, and a proposal to build a primary and secondary school for 1200 students was met with opposition from local residents and Bankstown Council, who cited several planning grounds as the reason for objection.
In May 2009, the Land and Environment Court ruled in favour of the school, and the judgment referred to whether Bankstown Council would have raised as many issues with the application had it been for an Anglican school.

Mr Stewart said he’s been informed that the Department has approached Al Amanah College to negotiate their proposal to construct a school for students with a disability on the site.
“There is a demonstrated need, within our local area, for a special school that caters for students with a disability,” Mr Stewart said.
“I have been making strong representations to the Government, over a long period of time, for the need in our local area to construct a school for students with a disability.”
“The Department would be negligent of the needs of such students not to take advantage of this opportunity.
Mr Stewart said he’s been advised that the proposed special needs school would be a “relatively small facility that would not adversely impact on local residential and traffic amenities”.
Al Amanah College could not be reached for comment at the time of printing.
