Muslim medic in UK: Muslim men “think they have God-given right to beat wives”

* From the “different strokes for different folks” department:

Gee, where could they have gotten that idea? The Telegraph, of course, gives no hint as to the answer to that question. Could it have something to do with this?

“Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them.” — Qur’an 4:34

Malaysia: Wife beaten for not finding new wife

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

News Com.au

A 57-year-old Malaysian Muslim man assaulted his wife and threatened to shoot her after she failed to secure him a young second wife, news reports said today. (But remember: according to a new fatwa she is allowed to beat him too/ed)

Mohamad Haris Daud, a local police chief in Kuantan in central Pahang state, said the man forced his 60-year-old wife to seek the consent of a woman in her 30s to be his second wife. The frightened wife then went to the woman’s house but found out that she was already married, he said.

The famous ‘backlash’- religiously sanctioned!

Domestic violence fatwa stirs outrage

* The sheikhs are shakin’ in their sandals…

Nadia Abou el Magd, Foreign Correspondent

CAIRO // While the Quran permits a husband physically to discipline his wife should she disobey him, a recent wave of rulings by Islamic scholars are encouraging women to fight back.

This week, Sheikh Abdel Hamid Al Atrash, who heads the committee for fatwas, or religious edicts, at Al Azhar University in Cairo, Sunni Islam’s highest institute, ruled that women are entitled to use violence to defend themselves from abusive husbands.

UK: Purge on Muslim clerics who turn a blind eye to the abuse of women?

Update

UK: Are women submitting to sharia courts voluntarily?

Muslim spiritual leaders could be denounced publicly by their own community as part of a campaign to expose imams whose silence on domestic abuse is leading to women being burnt, lashed and raped in the name of Islam.

A picture from Submission

Muslim scholars are to present the Government with the names of imams who are alleged by members of their own communities to have refused to help abused women. Imams are also accused of refusing to speak out against domestic abuse in their sermons because they fear losing their clerical salaries and being sacked for broaching a “taboo” subject.

Some of Britain’s most prominent moderate imams and female Muslim leaders have backed the campaign, urging the Home Office to vet more carefully Islamic spiritual leaders coming to Britain to weed out hardliners. A four-month inquiry by the Centre for Islamic Pluralism into domestic abuse has uncovered harrowing tales of women being raped, burnt by cigarettes and lashed with belts by their husbands, who believe it is their religious right to mistreat them.

At least 40 female Muslim victims and many social workers from northern England - including Bradford, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham - were interviewed as part of the inquiry, which is expected to be published next month.

Bunglawussi site defends wife beating, domestic violence, discovers the virtue of ‘Free Speech’

Update:

Hat Tip: Stephen

One apparent bright spot amongst the general gloom is a piece in the Guardian in which the jihadi agit prop Inayat Bunglawala of the MCB tells us of his conversion to free speech and how he was wrong to condemn Salman Rushdie.

Inayat

                    “Words can never hurt us”

On closer inspection this late change of heart seems to be related to the realization that the weapon of censorship could easily be turned against Muslims and their toxic tracts.

Bungla:

Twenty years after The Satanic Verses, Muslims are beginning to appreciate the right of others to offend them.
