Five Taliban leaders have arrived in Qatar after being freed from Guantanamo Bay in a swap deal for a US soldier held in Afghanistan for nearly five years. The Taliban’s supreme leader, Mullah Omar, on Sunday hailed their release as a “big victory”.

AP) WASHINGTON – Emails an American soldier reportedly sent to his parents before he was captured by the Taliban three years ago suggest he was disillusioned and considering deserting.

Bowe Bergdahl told his parents he was “ashamed to even be American” and was disgusted with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and with the Army, according to emails quoted in Rolling Stone magazine.

He sounds like Michelle Obama.

29-year-old Mehdi Nemmouche arrested in possession of firearms; according to reports, he was active with jihadist elements in Syria in 2013.

Mehdi Nemmouche, a French citizen, was detained in the southern French city of Marseille on Friday and had a Kalashnikov assault rifle and another gun with him, a French police source said on Sunday. Nemmouche is from the northern city of Roubaix and spent time in jail in 2012, the source said. (More)

U.S. officials identified the bomber as Moner Mohammad Abu-Salha of Florida, but have said little else. Records show a person with that name lived with his family in a stucco home in a gated community plunked among the Orange Groves on the edge of Vero Beach.

His father was “from Jordan.” Perhaps, on other occasions, he might be described as a “Palestinian”? Or was that father a Jordanian Eastern Palestinian, instead of being a Western Palestinian Eastern Palestinian? And the mother was an American who converted to Islam, with all the craziness that that now naturally implies. Young Moner Abu-Salha was the usual, according to reports: likable kid, nothing special, you get the picture. He was nothing at all. He went to two, or perhaps three, substandard junior-high-school level community colleges, dropped out, and found what he had never lost, but perhaps not taken to heart beforein quite the same way: Islam.

On Facebook he “liked” the Qur’an.

He liked it so much, he kept reading it over and over, and singing the verses in what he no doubt imagined was the right style. He liked what it told him to do, liked how it told him to view the world, that he went off to Syria to kill Infidels — those Alawites — and I don’t know if he succeeded, but he did manage, while trying, to kill himself. One more suicide bomber, this one of interest only because he was, not an Ameroican, excactly, but rather an American citizen, that citizenship having been acquired through his parents, and one of whom,his father, in being naturalized, I am sure perjured himself when he swore allegiance to the Constitution of the United States.

The “You Didn’t Do That” Society

First Elliot Rodger murdered his three roommates with a knife, hammer and machete. Then he shot eight people, three of them fatally, and tried to run over several others in his car.After the bodies were taken away, everyone on television agreed that it was the fault of the guns.Rodger had been in therapy since he was eight and was seeing therapists every day in high school. He had a history of making violent threats and the police had already gotten involved. He was on multiple prescription medications and had therapists whom he alerted to his plans by sending them his manifesto.A therapist reacted by notifying his mother who drove out personally. By then even more people were dead.

In a country where a little boy with a pop tart chewed in the shape of a gun triggers immediate action, the professionals who cashed in on the killer’s wealthy family were in no hurry to call the police. One even reassured his mother while the shootings were going on that it wasn’t him.

So it was clearly the fault of the guns. Guns that Elliot Rodger bought with $5,000 from his family. The BMW he used to commit some of the attacks was given to him by his mother.

Jenni Rodger, his British aunt, blamed America and guns for her nephew’s massacre. “What kind of a society allows this? How can this be allowed to happen? I want to appeal to Americans to do something about this horrific problem.”

Somehow the parenting failure of her brother is now the fault of an entire foreign country.

Rodger’s father issued a statement through his lawyer in support of gun control and “staunchly against guns.” It might have been a bit more useful if Peter Rodger, instead of opposing a category of manual instruments, had spent more time dealing with his son’s problems.

Guns did not kill six people. His son did.
