Update: Two (Musel-)men arrested over fire at Vilks’ house

Two men, aged 19 and 21, have been arrested in connection with an arson attack at the home in southern Sweden of artist Lars Vilks. “He is of Swedish nationality but originally from Kosovo … He was unknown to the police so far,” Scania district police spokesman Calle Pärsson told AFP.

Strange,is it not? A “moderate” Kosovo Muslim who wants to kill a cartoonist? Who would have thought?

STOCKHOLM (AP) – A Swedish artist whose drawing of the Prophet Muhammad with a dogs body angered Muslims said Sunday he doesn’t feel safe in his home at night, after a week of attacks against him.

Note yet again the AP’s “We’re all Muslims now” reference to “the Prophet Muhammad.”

Lars Vilks told The Associated Press he has started sleeping elsewhere since an attempted arson attack Friday against his home in Nyhamnslage, southern Sweden.Earlier in the week, Vilks was attacked by a man as he gave a lecture at a university in central Sweden, and the following day his Web site appeared to have been targeted by hackers….

As a matter of principle, Uppsala University should give him the opportunity to finish his lecture, unedited. Otherwise, it is precisely the case that “what you get is a mob deciding what can be discussed at the university.”

But officials at Uppsala University said they doubted they would invite Lars Vilks again after police used pepper spray and batons to help him escape a furious crowd Tuesday.

Confirmed by Hot Air:

Officials said they would “not likely” invite Vilks again because of the incident. In some quarters, the university’s reponse is adding to concerns that violence and threats from some members of the Muslim community are effectively muzzling free speech.

Those Damned Pictures and the Freedom to Cartoon

On the one hand it’s odd that the debate between Freedom and Islam has become centered over cartoons. The Danish cartoons of Mohammed and South Park’s more recent attempts to depict a cartoon image of Mohammed. Unlike novels, plays and other more high minded stuff, the few scrawled lines of a cartoon seem like an unlikely last stand for free speech in what used to be the free world.

But on the other hand, cartoons are an obvious Fort Apache for free speech because they represent a traditional outpost of parody and satire. Tolerance for the jester and the satirist speaks volumes about the general tolerance for freedom of speech. And so cartoons serve as the canary in the coal mine. When cartoons are being banned, it’s safe to say that the toxic fumes of tyranny are cutting off the breath of freedom on a much larger scale as well.

Protection Denied

The uproar around Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks continues to raise dust. The Swedish Intelligence Agency (SÄPO) now demands “protection money” if he still wants them around.

Lars VilksToday the Swedish Mohammed cartoonist Lars Vilks was scheduled to lecture on art in Gothenburg’s Eriksberg Hall. But the event was canceled by the organizers. For monetary reasons, or so they claim.

The Swedish Intelligence Agency SÄPO has started to collect money in order to protect Vilks. In connection with the lecture in Gothenburg, SÄPO demanded the organizers pay 25% of the costs associated with the event’s security, which made Vilks a very costly lecturer.

The renowned Coptic Christian priest Father Zakaria Botros was scheduled to speak in Vienna tonight, but the atmosphere created by Muslim threats was such the event had to be cancelled.

Anyway, Westergaard is now suing the leader of the Stop the Islamization of Europe movement and my colleague and partner in the trans Atlantic counter jihad coalition (SIOA), Anders Gravers, for the implied use of the image of the cartoon during a street protest. Yes, Gravers did not even show the cartoon. Both the SIOE (Stop the Islamization of Europe) and SIAD (Stop Islamization of Denmark) are named in the suit.  Read it all>>

Colleen LaRose, an American woman from Pennsylvania indicted and accused of using the Internet to recruit jihadist fighters and help terrorists overseas. LaRose is due in court Thursday, March 18, 2010, on charges that could bring a life sentence. LaRose, 46, is charged in a global conspiracy to kill a Swedish cartoonist who had offended Muslims.

Update:

‘Jihad Jane’ Pleads Not Guilty to Terror Plot Charges

Contrary to many reports that she did plead guilty. We never bought into this, because soldiers of allah (she is one of them) can do no wrong and can therefore never be guilty. If she kills kafirs who insulted Muhammad, it is the sword of allah that kills them.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq put a $100,000 bounty on Vilks after Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda published a cartoon by Vilks that depicted the prophet Mohammed with a dog’s body in 2007.

If convicted, LaRose faces life imprisonment and a $1 million fine.

A spokesman of the Organization of the Islamic Conference’s Islamophobia Observatory condemned the reprint of the controversial drawing of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by Swedish artist Lars Vilks in three Swedish newspapers, namely Dagens Nyheter, Expressen, and Sydsvenska Dagbladet, and electronic media including radio and television broadcasts as reaction to an alleged plot to murder the cartoonist, which was uncovered in Ireland on March 9, 2010.

The spokesman said that the OIC had always spoken against violence including death threats against the originators of the blasphemous cartoons. He said however, that the Swedish media’s explanation of the action taken to reprint the cartoons in the name of freedom of expression was unacceptable, unwise and irresponsible as it has caused hurt and insult to the Muslim citizens of Sweden as well as the 1.5 billion Muslims across the world who had nothing to do with the alleged death threat. The spokesman added that there were other options available for the Swedish media to show their protest instated of resorting to an action that could potentially open a raw wound and incite avoidable unrest.
