Lebanon: No Future For Christians?

Christians emigrating as Lebanon increasingly “Islamized”

“Lebanon has always been a bastion of religious tolerance, but now it is moving toward the model of Islamization seen in Iraq and Egypt.”

BEIRUT: Christians are tempted to flee Lebanon as the country becomes increasingly “Islamized,” according to the founder of the Center for Arab Christian Research and Documentation (CEDRAC). One-third of the nation’s Christian population has left since the beginning of the 1975-90 Civil War, and a recent surge in emigration means Christians now make up just 34 percent of Lebanon’s population, Father Samir Khalil, a Jesuit teacher at Beirut’s St. Joseph University’sCEDRAC department, told Vatican Radio last week.

“Christians used to make up 50 percent of the nation’s population; now experts think the Christians are probably not exceeding 34 percent, which is worrying,” Khalil said in the radio interview during a visit to The Holy See.

Willie Clitman's wife: US never will `sell out' Lebanon

* After the horse has bolted,  you dismount…

BEIRUT (AP) — Ahead of an election that could oust the U.S.-backed Beirut government, America’s top diplomat said Sunday that Washington supports “voices of moderation” and never will make a deal Syria that “sells out” Lebanon’s interests.

The June 7 vote could boost the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies, possibly paving the way for renewed Syrian influence over Lebanon.

* Stay tuned. Watch this space…

RoP hits Lebanon: bus blast kills 18

Just another jihadi bus bombing from “Dar al-Salam.” “18 dead in Lebanon bomb blast,” from the Associated Press, August 13:

A bomb has exploded near a bus carrying civilians and members of the military in the northern city of Tripoli, killing 18 people and wounding 46 others.

Officials say the dead included 10 off-duty soldiers.

The officials said the bomb was planted on the side of a road and went off when the bus passed by, causing the casualties. They said the explosion happened as the streets were filled with people heading to work, which contributed to the many injuries.[…]

There was no immediate word on who was behind the explosion.

Tripoli is Lebanon’s second-largest city with a mostly Sunni Muslim population.

Wasn’t always like that. In fact, Lebanon was long known as the “Paris” of the Middle East — but that was when it was a Christian majority.
