Through a blizzard of flies, I can just about make out the plasma TV up in the corner on which Jimmy Carter, dubbed into Arabic, is denouncing Israel. Al Jazeera doesn’t so much cover the Zionist Entity as feast on it, hour after hour, without end. So here, at the western frontier of the Muslim world (if you don’t include Yorkshire), the only news that matters is from a tiny strip of land barely wider at its narrowest point than a rural Canadian township way down the other end of the Mediterranean.
Helen Thomas is a vile old Jew-hater. The great thing about the land of the First Amendment is that she’s free to be one. What’s odder is why so many people feel it necessary to obscure the nature of what she said, or to pass off her fate as yet another of the many obstacles “anti-establishment” “liberals” face in America. Helen Thomas had a privileged seat at the White House for decades. At his six (count ’em) press conferences, President Obama has taken questions from her on three occasions. She is the establishment – or was, for half a century. And that ought to bea source of shame
Steyn also has this:
As paradoxical as it sounds, Muslims have been far greater beneficiaries of Holocaust guilt than the Jews. In a nutshell, the Holocaust enabled the Islamization of Europe. Without post-war guilt, and the revulsion against nationalism, and the embrace of multiculturalism and mass immigration, the Continent would never have entertained for a moment the construction of mosques from Dublin to Dusseldorf and the accommodation of Muslim sensitivities on everything from British nursing uniforms to Brussels police doughnut consumption during Ramadan. Holocaust guilt is a cornerstone of the Muslim Europe arising before our eyes. The Oldest Hatred
The Khadr’s, Canada’s First Family of Terror, are a despicable lot. Not a year goes by without one of them appearing on the front pages, living out their Islamist customs and traditions. This time it’s Abdulkareem Khadr, the son of patriarch Ahmed, who was killed in a firefight near the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. Abdulkareem was left paralyzed from a bullet to his spine in this same firefight and after returning to Canada, now finds himself charged with sexual assault of a minor.
lsam is built on sexual inequality and on the surrender of individual responsibility and choice. This is not just ugly; it is monstrous. Â Facing up to radical Islam by Ayaan Ali Hirsi, the most hated woman in the ‘Islamic world’….
MARK STEYN: Nicholas Kristof is just the latest great thinker to talk himself into a rosy view of Islam…
The left has other priorities.  Mohammedanism doesn’t  make the top ten or twenty list of things that are wrong with Canada or Western Civilization. They’re not the ones who want to teach fisting to schoolchildren, or believe human breath is poisonous, or that we needed to go into deficit fifty large, or penalize soccer teams for scoring too many goals, etc.,etc. (how very boring indeed!)
From Andrew Bolt:
The latest is Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times. Reviewing Ayaan’s new book Nomad, he begins:
“She has managed to outrage more people—in some cases to the point that they want to assassinate her—in more languages in more countries on more continents than almost any writer in the world today. Now Hirsi Ali is working on antagonizing even more people in yet another memoir.”
That’s his opening pitch: if there are those who wish to kill her, it’s her fault because she’s a provocateuse who’s found a lucrative shtick in “working on antagonizing” people. The Times headlines Kristof’s review “The Gadfly,” as if she’s a less raddled and corpulent Gore Vidal. In fact, she wrote a screenplay for a film; Muslim belligerents threatened to kill her and her director; they made good on one half of that threat. This isn’t shtick.
Despite being a bit of an old showbiz queen, I’m not much for the huggy-kissy photo wall of me sharing a joke with various luvvies. I make an exception on the bureau behind my desk for a shot of yours truly and a beautiful woman, Somali by birth, Dutch by citizenship, at a beachfront bar in Malibu at sunset. I like the picture because, while I look rather bleary with a few too many chins, my companion is bright-eyed with a huge smile on her face and having a grand old time—grand, that is, because of its very normality: a crappy bar, drinks with cocktail umbrellas, a roomful of blithely ignorant California hedonists who’ll all be going back home at the end of the evening to Dancing With the Stars or Conan O’Brien or some other amusement.
Leftist brainfarts are becoming increasingly toxic….
Ayaan Hirsi Ali can’t lead that life. She lives under armed guard and was forced to abandon the Netherlands because quite a lot of people want to kill her. And not in the desultory behead-the-enemies-of-Islam you-will-die-infidel pro forma death-threats-R-us way that many of us have perforce gotten used to in recent years: her great friend and professional collaborator was murdered in the streets of Amsterdam by a man who shot him eight times, attempted to decapitate him, and then drove into his chest two knives, pinning to what was left of him a five-page note pledging to do the same to her.
No, there is nothing in the Koran that obliges the fast breeding soldiers of Allah to pay the pensions of aging EUro-dhimmies…..
Germany is already facing a demographic nightmare as birth rates fall despite a slew of family-friendly policies. Now, new statistics show that more people are leaving the country than immigrating — adding to concerns about the country’s shrinking population. more from SPIEGEL…
We’re too broke to be this stupid
Beleaguered taxpayers may finally put a stop to the sheer waste of government spending
Back in 2008, when I was fulminating against multiculturalism on a more or less weekly basis, a reader wrote to advise me to lighten up, on the grounds that “we’re rich enough to afford to be stupid.”
Two years later, we’re a lot less rich. In fact, many Western nations are, in any objective sense, insolvent. Hence last week’s column, on the EU’s decision to toss a trillion dollars into the great sucking maw of Greece’s public-sector kleptocracy. It no longer matters whether you’re intellectually in favour of European-style social democracy: simply as a practical matter, it’s unaffordable. Â Mark Steyn has more>>
I found this an arresting headline – “Is Europe Turning Japanese?” – but a goofy opening paragraph:
The dismal growth prospects of many European countries has raised an increasing number of questions about whether large parts of the continent will emulate Japan of the 1990s and endure a decade-long economic stagnation. On the face of it, a long-lasting Japan-style post-bubble slump with deflation seems a plausible outcome for a large part of the continent.
For a start, Europe’s would be a no-bubble slump – and, as for “decade-long economic stagnation”, you should be so lucky. Japan isn’t in a “slump”, it’s in long-term decline. In my book, I recalled the days of hysteria about how “the yellow peril was annexing America and pretty soon they’d be speaking Japanese down at the shopping mall”:
It didn’t happen and it’s never going to happen. In the Nineties, I tended to accept the experts’ line that Japan’s rising sun had gone into eclipse because its economywas riddled with protectionism, cronyism and inefficient special-interest groups. But so what? You could have said the same in the Sixties and Seventies, when the joint was jumping. The only real structural difference between Japan then and Japan now is that the yellow peril got a lot wrinklier. What happened in the 1990s was what Yamada Masahiro of Tokyo’s Gakugei University calls the first “low birth-rate recession”. It’s not the economy, stupid. It’s the stupidity, economists – the stupidity of thinking you can ignore demography.
I wrote last week about the American Academy of Pediatrics’ support for Female Genital Mutilation-lite – a “ritual nick.” In return, I received a remarkable number of letters asserting I’d invented the whole thing. Not so. You can find chapter and verse and here.
Ah, a custom from the old country! Why didn’t you say so…?
One reason why readers think we right-wing madmen are just making this stuff up is because of the shameful silence (and worse) of western feminists, who implicitly accept a two-tier sisterhood, in which some women get to lead the lives they choose while others, in the interests of “cultural sensitivity,” get a literally rawer deal that begins with FGM and, if they’re really unlucky, ends with “honor killing.”
So I’m happy to salute the great Tina Brown, a fully paid-up Clinton-Blairite but not one prepared to descend into barbarism. Over at her Daily Beast, Ms. Brown has published a tough and unsparing column by Ayaan Hirsi Ali on what the AAP’s “nick” really means — and where it leads. I have one tiny quibble with the e-mail alert Tina sent out:
Do read the extraordinary piece by Ayaan Hirsi Ali this morning on The Daily Beast on the outrageous proposal from the American Academy of Pediatrics to “nick” little girls, a slippery slope to tolerating genital cutting in the U.S. — Tina Brown
“Genital cutting” is itself a euphemism. In its 1998 policy position, the AAP used the phrase “female genital mutilation.” A decade on, they prefer to call it “female genital cutting” — “mutilation” being regarded by cultural accommodationists as too judgmental. At the rate this slippery slope is greased, you can guess where we’ll be in another decade.
Now, “Islam Expert” Licia Corbella of The Calgary Herald has weighed in, as follows:
Recently, Tarek Fatah wrote a column that condemned former Muslim, Wafa Sultan, who gave a speech recently at a Toronto synagogue. During the speech, Sultan, Syrian-American and author of A God Who Hates, said the Prophet Muhammad raped Aisha, one of his wives when she was nine and he was 54. Evidence makes it clear that this is not true.
Really? What evidence? All the earliest accounts state that Aisha was six or seven when she was married to Mohammed, and nine when the marriage was consummated. The exception is the biography of the Prophet written by Ibn Ishaq (died circa 761) and edited by Ibn Hisham (died 833), which states that Aisha was ten when the marriage was consummated. Other than that, the age is not a matter of serious dispute. More from Mark Steyn
We are now ready to continue with our discussion of The Michael Coren show, Part 2. Please take the time, once again, to watch both segments.
Part 1 is here. Part 2 is above. And my discussion of Part 1 is here. (Jihad Watch, of course)
Muslims: Let’s just be honest. Please.
The Muslim speaker is claiming that there was only one source for Muhammad’s marrigae to the six year old Aisha. This is similar to the claim that Jihad had nothing to do with holy war ~ and that it was all about inner peace ~ that has since been put to rest.
Here is little Aisha in her own words:
‘A’ishah said : I used to play with dolls. Sometimes the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) entered upon me when the girls were with me. When he came in, they went out, and when he went out, they came in.” Sunan Abu Dawud vol.3 no.4913 p.1373
The hathiths point to Muhammad going after another child of the age of 2, but died before he could get his hands on the child….
That’s how it works: you set up a commission to deal with crimes of thought and stack it with lefties. You hand them the power to go after anyone for any reason. As a “safeguard”, you require the commission to prosecute its case through the courts. You then stack the courts with the same left-wing activists you appointed to the commission.
Plenty of precedent in the Soviet Union, North Korea, Kampuchea, Saddam’s Iraq, China, Myanmar, East Germany, Romania, Cuba …
And this is what’s cookin’ in Australia right now:
PC police  hire Mohammedan blood hounds to stop criticism of Islam
Not so fast: here’s a video  that should  make you really feel good about  safety when you board your next flight:
Just a little note to those who believe the jihad started  on 9/11 with George Bush:
Went to the Melbourne Immigration Museum today. In the entrance, there is a little display that refers to a Peter Cahill, who fled Lebanese Christian persecution in 1881. Who do you think persecuted Christians throughout the centuries?
Napolitano finally calls Fort Hood massacre  “Violent Islamic terrorism”
I have to wonder though, why now? Liberals always spin the real deal with their politically correct appeasement rhetoric  until the truth bites them in the ass and their forced to admit the truth.  This is one of those examples.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has become the first Obama Administration official to publicly describe last year’s deadly shootings at Ft. Hood, Tex., as a terrorist act, according to a search of news clips and transcripts.
“Violent Islamic terrorism … was part and parcel of the Ft. Hood killings,” Napolitano told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday morning. “There is violent Islamic terrorism, be it Al Qaeda in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen or anywhere else, [and] that is indeed a major focus of this department and its efforts.”
I pretty much said what I had to say about the Fort Hood massacre in the first couple of weeks, because it was perfectly obvious within about 48 hours that 14 people (including an unborn child) had died so that “diversity” might live. As is the way, the official version is taking longer to catch up to what anyone not marinated in brain-eating PC mush could see from the get-go. The Boston Globe has a story on a new army report, unfortunately completed too late for last month’s whitewash:
An obvious “problem child’’ spouting extremist views, Hasan made numerous statements that were not protected by the First Amendment and were grounds for discharge by violating his military oath, investigators found. . .
Dutch TV interviews a Muslim cleric who was on Geert Wilders list of witnesses for the defence, but was denied by the court. I believe the line ‘practised at the art of deception’ best suits this imam. Thank you Mr. Jagger.
There’s no shortage of volunteers. In the Low Countries, whenever anyone seeks to discuss Islam outside the very narrow bounds of multicultural political discourse, they wind up either banned (Belgium’s Vlaams Blok), forced into exile (Ayaan Hirsi Ali) or killed (Pim Fortuyn).
It’s remarkable how speedily “the most tolerant country in Europe,” in a peculiarly repellent strain of coercive appeasement, has adopted “shoot the messenger” as an all-purpose cure-all for “Islamophobia.”
Sometimes you do live to see it. In my book America Alone, I point out that, to a five-year old boy waving his flag as Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee procession marched down the Mall in 1897, it would have been inconceivable that by the time of his eightieth birthday the greatest empire the world had ever known would have shriveled to an economically moribund strike-bound socialist slough of despond, one in which (stop me if this sounds familiar) the government ran the hospitals, the automobile industry and much of the housing stock, and, partly as a consequence thereof, had permanent high unemployment and confiscatory tax rates that drove its best talents to seek refuge abroad.
A number of readers, disputing the relevance of this comparison, send me mocking letters pointing out, for example, Britain’s balance of payments and other deteriorating economic indicators from the early 20th century on. True. Great powers do not decline for identical reasons and one would not expect Britain’s imperial overstretch to lead to the same consequences as America’s imperial understretch. Nonetheless, my correspondents are perhaps too sophisticated and nuanced to grasp the somewhat more basic point I was making. Perched on his uncle’s shoulders that day was a young lad who grew up to become the historian Arnold Toynbee. He recalled the mood of Her Majesty’s jubilee as follows: “There is, of course, a thing called history, but history is something unpleasant that happens to other people. We are comfortably outside all of that I am sure.” The end of history, 1897 version.
